biggest money maker using wood I ever did was a three tier garden bed that wrapped around a customers deck, they got tired of looking at ugly plastic lattice. they mentioned wanting a garden and it killed two birds with one stone. They filled the entire thing tomato plants XD

The tools don’t cost as much as you think for basic ones. As long as you’ve got a mitre block, saw and clamps you can make these. It will just take more effort as you’re physically sawing. Don’t be put off.

Only one thing I would add. That is a couple dowels (not glued, just inserted) at the ends of the bench where they rest on the planter. As it is, if someone moves the planter, the bench will fall down. The dowels will keep the bench from separating (with use or unexpectedly) from the planter. Excellent work and looks really nice.

@spocksvulcanbrain what's good about your idea, especially if you want to break them down to store at end of each season, is that you can easily reconfigure them in different arrangements and not damage out surface of planters. Both could be useful depending on application.

I’ve been thinking about building an ottoman bed, with storage underneath. I’m not very experienced yet. It’s going to be quite a project, more complicated than the foot stool and shelf I’ve made so far, and last night I was doubting whether I should do it or just buy a new bed from Ikea. Your mantra was exactly what I needed to hear. If you can dream it, you can build it. Thanks a lot, mate. Also, I appreciate the focus on protection. You’re setting a good example.

This is a very cool project. But, my only concern, which is a big one, is safety. There are no support braces to keep it from twisting and keeping it square. The pocket holes and nicely 90d corners are pretty sturdy, but a wiggling child or a heavy adult will wear on those screws. Or a large dog runs into a planter several times and again, and those screws can only last under so much stress. It is soft wood. I'm not knocking the work and have no idea if the original he is eluding to has extra support. I've just been the happy recipient of meeting the ground in quick response to a broken chair. Keep up the good work, Matt, and let me know your thoughts if you have time. Thanks

That Kreg quick flip thing looks like an exact copy of some of the bits in a fairly extensive drill/driver bit set I inherited from my late grandfather. It's a Craftsman, and judging from the brochure that was in it it's gotta be from the 90s. Everything looks exactly the same other than the branding. I had no idea the little nub on the chuck side was an allen key, that's pretty awesome. Mine's made in USA, I wonder if the Kreg is too by whatever company was making them for Craftsman 30 years ago?

Hi Matthew, Nice looking garden bench. Now this might just be a camera angle, but it looks like the stained slats that you're sitting on are bowing. Do you not think that three supports under the bench slats would be a stronger option? By the way, if you put a board on one of the planters, then a pillow or a cushion, You could sleep for much longer and be more comfortable. Regards

Man I love the impact this thing has, it looks substantial but doesn't take a ton of wood. I prefer planters that can hold dirt without a pot, but it would be easy to modify the horizontal rails to work with some fence picket panels. In my area cedar has come way down in price so it's well worth it to spend a little more to upgrade.

I would add a decorative shallow cut about 1 1/2" below the decorative points, and stain inside it to tie the look together. Yes I will build that!! 😁

I love this idea. Here is a question I have, as I'm still a novice and haven't worked with pressure treated wood... I just priced pressure treated lumber, and it's basically twice as expensive. But would it maybe be worth it for the durability? I also know you have to let the PT lumber dry before working with it, which creates a delay as well.

Nice way to get away from the smalls for a little bit but still need to keep the smalls. Even if not for selling, this is a practical home build for much less than retail. Very nice! Videos along this theme would b good to continue. Total build time for this one??? Keep the vids coming brother ross peech😂

I like this, one of the few time I have purchased plans for an item. We have an issue with people trying to sleep on benches in front of our church's coffee house, so I want to make two units of two planters with a bench between, but add french cleat to the side to secure the benches instead of pocket holes, then when closed, we can easily lift of the bench and put inside for the night :) But boy, just went looking for 20" artificial round plants to put in them... DANG! $70+ each

This is why churches are losing members so rapidly. The message of love others and treat them as youd want to be treated, but when someone is so tired, they will literally sleep on a random bench, and the churches thought is how can we prevent that is sad. Good luck with your benches, though.

@@johngcp I kept it clean and simple by just wording it "trying to sleep", and perhaps that was wrong as it gave the wrong image, as apparent by your reply. The more accurate way to put it is people after midnight coming by and where there is seating available, use that to set up office each night for drug dealing and prositiution, being extremely loud, making a mess, and people crashing out there till the sun comes up, leaving behind the mess from the nights activites. This is also directly under the windows of people who living in the house trying to sleep. And yes I have been out there during the middle of the night and offered help and prayer, some it helps, some reject, but I'll still try. The other thing I like about this set, the price point, we have had good heavy duty rubber coated metal benches stolen. These, if stolen/damaged, easy enough to repair :) And I think the plants would be a nice look out front :)

Great model. I will definitely be checking this out on your Etsy. A suggestion... why not drill your pocket holes on the planter before you paint and assemble them the first time? It would probably be easier to handle the parts to drill the holes and you wouldn't have to go back to touch up the paint.
