Another low-cost / high-profit fence picket item to add to your collection! Everyone loves birdhouses. Especially purple martin boxes... There's just something nostalgic to a handmade wooden martin box. And you simply can't find them anymore... they have been replaced with cheap plastic ones.
In this video, I will show you how to make this large martin box using only 4 fence pickets. Now that's what I call a home-run for any woodworking business or side hustle.

I make furniture and stuff out of old reclaimed wood although I do alright with it as a hobby. I've recently started making birdhouse and birdfeeders and they've been selling like hotcakes! Everytime I go and sell, I sell out pretty quick! There are so many designs a person can do. Where I live, bluebird houses are very popular. And they sell quick! Thanks for sharing 👍

Like you I enjoy taking scrap stuff an making something out of it,or those fence boards for couple bucks each at the time ,I could make 2--3 of the little bird houses from one. @freewillchoice8052 i sell my houses for 80$ and the stand it comes on for 30$. When I started making them the most common question I had was how do I mount it. So I made a stand that it can slide on and off . It solved the problem of how to mount it and made a way for me to upscale.

@kingbunny5306

@freewillchoice8052 I usually make 3 at a time, if I'm organized, keep it basic and don't have to search for tools or material I can do 3 in 2 work days. If I'm making a fancy house which means I'll burn the wood then scrape it down and then stain it then it usually is 3 houses in 3 days. I find burning and scraping the wood takes the house to another level and I've been able to sell those for 200$ with stand. I find with the stand it takes it from a birdhouse to a piece of backyard furniture 😃

So I made my $6 planters. The first one I kept to intrigue my neighbors. The second I took for the family reunion auction. Both were made with pickets we had left over from when we replaced our fence. The auction one went for $60 and would have been higher but the heat and an anniversary party kept the reunion small. That all being said, I've invested in new tools. My husband's tools are about to hit the classics age, so figured I'd treat him to a new table saw, sliding compound miter saw with stand, and the one tool he's always wanted but couldn't bring himself to buy for himself, a pro pocket jig like in your video. Plus organizing and cleaning the garage since he is using his vacation week to help elderly disabled relatives fix their home. Can't wait to see his face at the surprises. Thank you for these videos, they have inspired me!

I am enjoying your series very much and have made four planters so far for my wife. showed her the bird house video and have now started building one for her. I do not make these for profit, I simply make them for the pleasure I get I get making them for my wife. I read many of the comment's people leave, which are mostly good except the people who are confused and think they need a nice workshop and a bunch of high end tools like yours to complete these projects. I do not have a big shop and a bunch of high end tools. Work with what you have and if you sell projects, take the profits and buy Quality tools that will make you more profit. continue building your business and your skill level. Thanks Matthew

Matthew, Greetings from Detroit, MI. I followed your plans and completed my birdhouse over several weekends using five pickets. As a beginner, it was a very satisfying project, with minimal cost and probably 10 hours of work. My mistakes were not expensive. The only problem was that the pickets warp quite a bit so nothing really lined up easily. I added a scrap of Tyvek underneath the shingle strips to try to keep the rain out of the interior. I'm really happy with the result and look forward to attempting your other project ideas.

One thing you might want to add to the design is a few small holes or cuts in the floor of each compartment. Will allow for any liquid that gets in (either rain, dewm or from the birds) to drain out and increase the birdhouses life a bit and its pretty easy to do. Overall awesome project, would be kind of fun to see a small railing on the front like a southern plantation house. Not sure if that would dissuade the birds though.

So I'm in the process of making the herringbone planter. First time using fence pickets for anything but a fence. I have to say, if you can afford it, opt for better boards. Either get the cedar pickets, which at my Lowe's were cut better, or get 1x6 lumber or something. These cheap pine pickets have been a struggle. It's a time or money situation, which one do you want to spend?

Great looking birdhouse! Couple of quick observations: Could the cutoffs from the gable ends could be used for the roof support? The gable ends could also have holes drilled for an additional two nest boxes. The roof would have to be removable. Cut the shingle details before ripping the roof strips, cut the pieces a half shingle longer and then just flip them to create the offset pattern.
@MatthewPeechWoodworking

Yes they could. I actually used the cutoffs for one end of my prototype. I just didnt want for someone newer to the trade trimming small parts on a miter saw. And yes with the roof removable you would have room for 2 more end boxes.

I built a Victorian style bird house last year and it is amazing. I did smaller and way more detail than this so it took quite a bit more time. I will say that using CA glue is not a good option unless this is a waterproof glue which I don't think they are. My CA glue lasted about a year on the railings and they just fell apart. I would suggest using a waterproof wood glue or construction adhesive (which I use a lot now.) I'll have to shoot you a picture of my bird house soon so people can be amazed at how much detail you can get by using just garbage and scraps laying around. Cool build. Cheers!

Thanks for posting that your CA glue didn't hold up. Haven't used it for an outdoors application, but I'm surprised to hear this. Sounds like a case for combining the CA in a small spot to hold (clamp) instantly and exterior glue on the rest for durability. Not much surface area on those "posts" though. Might be tricky.

I made custom outdoor lounge chairs, treated wood, beer bottle shaped back, cup/ bottle holders in tha arms, webbing below, to hold the beverage container. Had them for sale for 10 yrs, online, local neighborhood yard sale website, and, at the only waterfront restaurant in town. Back then, $34.00 in materials, all day to make one. Asked $150.00, haven't sold one.

@@MatthewPeechWoodworking I wanted to ask you have you gotten any feed back on the corn hole boxes? I'm wondering how well they are selling across the country.I live in a farm community and thought about building a few but in my area there are alot of old times that still love horseshoes and washers .I have a DeWalt scroll saw as well as a few other basic wood working tools .I've been looking for some small projects that might sell.It seems to me that simple wood boxes of any kind are easy to sell.I use to get alot of pallets and break them down and plane the boards but lately seems everyone is grabbing the pallets....Great content as always I enjoy your channel !!!!

I really appreciate your videos, great ideas and straight to the point. I install semi-custom doors here in Texas for a number of home builders. I constantly scan the scrap piles for materials. I find cedar fence off cuts, oak stair treads and nice pine. The other day I found 2 pcs of 6 X 5/8 X 16 cedar. I jumped on that quickly and cut it into 4 8ft lengths that would fit in the bed of my work truck. Today it was more cedar fence off cuts. I have enough to build at least four of those nice bird houses! Free is best for making money!

Love how using saw cuts makes it look like more pieces of wood went into creating it! One question: is the roof waterproof? it seems like rain would come between the shingle slats and flow between the two ceiling pieces.

I was wondering the same thing .It's the way the third and fifth "shingle" course is recessed behind the course below . It looks as though water will run behind the second and course. Plus, it just doesn't look right having those courses recessed behind the course below. I think the Purple Martins will love it though. FYI- Purple Martins never land on the ground.

VERY IMPORTANT! ANY TIME YOU MAKE A BIRD HOUSE !!! The inside front panel (where the hole is) HAS to be ROUGH!!! Whether you put hardware cloth on it or use rough wood or cut small grooves in the wood (like a tiny ladder) OTHERWISE the birds could (most likely) get trapped inside and die. - because if the panel is smooth (planed or sanded at all) their tiny little toenails can't get a grip to climb out and there isn't enough space for them to fly out either. Which is literally the opposite goal of having a bird house.

Fence pickets are usually fairly rough if you don’t sand them
@backwoodsbaby9729
@backwoodsbaby9729 2 жыл бұрын
@@melissawf fence pickets probably would be fine for roughness, except they are treated... which I would generally shy away from using treated wood if it's going to be an animal enclosure of some form...which this is. (Like my rabbit hutch. Treated wood is only used for the legs that don't come in contact with the animals, everything else is untreated and not stained or painted) This is one of those projects if we are going to make it for birds to live in we should probably upgrade to the cedar picket. Still plenty of money to be made tho.
