As for excuses... gotta go, I still have to read my 3 chapters of "C von A bis Z". Coding is simpler for me than learning how to draw: Read the book, learn the syntax, write an example script to test it. Perhaps even intentionally make errors to examine the error(s) given by the compiler. Drawing is... Well, where do I even start? Perhaps the most difficult "skill" to pick up.

That's the problem your comparing your age /skill to other people. If you want to be good at drawing it has to be for yourself not so you can be better than someone who is younger.... absurd statement in itself what you said. If you want to be good at darwing your focus is how much have you improved from the previous days, weeks. compare and practice to excel so that you can reach a level art that you desire. One note: In this video I say "Don't use pure black and pure white", but I've changed my mind since. Use it where appropriate, it's going to be very stark and bring a lot of attention. The idea of never using pure black and white comes more from digital design than digital art and illustration.
@MasterStacona6 жыл бұрын
If you are drawing anime-style characters, then that is when you use black lines and white shines in the eyes. If you are going chibi-style characters then no black makes sense since it is softer and more pleasing for your eyes since it is meant to be cute and happy, you can also add transparency to a white eye shine (which obviously no longer makes it white) depending on what you want to go for. Rule of thumb though is black is very rarely ever acceptable to use in most cases, while white is usually fine, but also depends on what you are going for. Lots of the time when white is used, it is followed up by shadows and lighting which are usually some kind of colour to it.

You know I only draw because I get a drawing when I drawn. No joke that is not true. I don't play video games for the virtual points either. I do it because it makes me feel good and that's the only reason. So if drawing is boring for you you shouldn't draw and if gaming is entreteing for you feel free to do it. And I don't think gaming is bad for you, it could be if you spend all your time doing so but so do every other things except for breathing probably.
@hansbrackhaus80177 жыл бұрын
Order of importance: 1.) Gesture. 2.) Proportion 3.) Construction (including perspective) 4.) Broad details (including blocking in 2 values , lightest and darkest areas squint your eyes to make it easier to group everything into two groups) 5.) Fine detail (general rendering) There is also only one single way to fully fail drawing: Quitting. Otherwise, to reach any level you want, you have to always have a goal, this can be as small as you want, and an approach to that goal. It is also incredibly important to not bite off more than you can chew and do incremental things. For example, don't draw boxes if you can't draw straight lines. First draw lines until you can do them in your sleep, only then move to boxes, and so forth. Always master the simpler thing before tackling the next thing, this will free your mind and you don't have to go "Uhhh, how would a box look from this angle" while trying to study some simplified anatomy construction. And to illustrate on the power of mileage and keeping at it, and the fact that ANYONE can be an artist: Consider this fictional example. You're in a time dilation chamber where you don't feel hungry or sleepy as long as you draw at least one single line per "day" and you can live inside it forever, thing is, it's really boring aside from that and you want out. The only way out is to do a 1:1 reproduction of an incredibly complex lineart piece that is the size of a football field. You have to reproduce it perfectly. Can you do it? Yes, of course, anyone can. How? Simple, you look at the very first stroke of the drawing, and you practice this single stroke, over and over and over again, until you can do it in your sleep without thinking. Then you go to the next stroke. Since you can draw the first stroke in your sleep, you can fully concentrate on the next stroke. Practice it until you can do the second stroke in your sleep. You get where I'm heading here, right? And yes, it's true. You would inevitably be able to replicate such a crazy daunting piece. But that's fictional, real life returns are much quicker. You don't need a time dilation device to get good result comparatively quickly...if you follow the advice of mastering the simple stuff, the fundamentals first. From straight lines and good curves, to construction, to fine detail. You can do it if you keep at it. Everyone can. If you have all the bodyparts required for drawing, and the minimal mental capabilities, then you'll be able to become a great artist. Only mileage (and a good approach for practice) stands between you...but even if you only scrawled aimlessly, even that would improve you...just not with very good returns. You can become a decent amateur artist in a year if you treat it seriously and draw every day for 20 minutes. 20 Minutes is a great timeframe, you'll find out why if you do it. And you should. You can be an artist. Anyone can. I don't even have to wish anyone luck here, there is no luck involved, only mileage and practice.

I really should send this video to my friend. She wants to be able to draw and constantly asks me for advice. She has potential. I saw her trying to draw a girl based on what she observed what I do when I draw a girl. And while it has every description of a beginner artist (scratchy lines, anatomy problems, stiff position) I would say it's better than average for someone who never draws. She's been improving everytime I point out something. She's also a very organized person and if she has enough determination, she could easily pass my lazy and unorganized butt (who has started drawing 3 years ago) in about a year or even a couple of months. The only problem is: She believes that a person is born into art and drawing, no matter how much I've told her "My art started as a stickman too." I'll have to translate this video for her to understand, so wish me luck.

Sounds less like high standards and more like low self-worth, based on my experience. Treat yourself like you'd treat anyone else, your art and someone else's included, and you'll hopefully find yourself seeing your improvements and successes a lot more than your mistakes. Helps a lot if you learn to just let the mistake exist and finish the piece anyway, with it in tact whether or not you work it in. Better for practice pieces, obviously, but it's a good way of learning to let go of them when they happen.
@crispymayo55707 жыл бұрын
Zeke Ogburn the reason I said high standard is because I like for my art to be "perfect." For example, I drew my profile picture but I know I can do better and then I get annoyed at myself. But i should try to be more calm about it, and to accept mistakes.

Thanks! I actually searched the fundamentals of art just recently in Google (I didn't even know what a fundamental is!) I wanted to be good at drawing. When I was a kid, I used to draw a lot of stuffs from my imagination and it was really fun even though I had no idea that my drawings were so bad, because I didn't care, enjoyment was the only thing I was after. Then I grew up, didn't even realize I wouldn't draw anymore after we moved in the city. My classmates in elementary school were good at drawing and I was not, I was frustrated, I tried but I couldn't really draw good. Even today in highschool, I envy a lot of people who are so incredible. Thought it was only just a talent because I had none, then I read a manga about art, the protagonist mentioned that the other character was so good at art because she had natural talent, but the other character didn't agree. She said that it made her mad because she did work hard on it, and that saying it was because of talent means dismissing her efforts. I realized after that it wasn't just a talent after all, because they earned what they deserve and now I want to work hard too. I saw one of your video earlier, it taught me a lot! Thank you.

I feel like people don't necessarily understand what they are doing "wrong" when they try to draw. Learning from drawing isn't just drawing over and over again hoping something will eventually click and build you into this amazing artist. Practice is key to learning to draw don't get me wrong, but you also have to critique your own work. If your first thousand pieces of art make you step back and say "It looks like shit", don't just leave it at that, find your strengths and find your weaknesses. People develop style by finding what they are good at and exaggerating it over the weaknesses. I'm excellent at making gestures, but terrible at rendering, so I use perspective to exaggerate a gesture and keep the shading to a simple Cel shading. Style is grown from this way of thinking. So instead of saying "it's shit", ask "why do I think it's shit? what is causing it to be shit? What can I do as an artist to prevent these overlaying symptoms from ruining the whole piece?".
@KarstenWusthoff5 жыл бұрын
This! I couldn't draw something somewhat realistic looking if my life depended on it. But then I looked at the stuff I consider "good" myself and BEHOLD #1: I like the oatmeal, xkcd etc. which are all super basic drawings, but with awesome "content". So I started to think about "What to draw" and not "How to draw" and BEHOLD #2: People look at it and laugh or smile or get sad or give me a kiss (I draw a lot for my wife) and NOBODY cares about the "childish" style. In my mind, a lot of "bad drawings" are not bad because of a lack of skill, but because of a lack of story.

Nieve Very true, also that people shouldn't mix up a self-critique with self deprivation. Just because a drawing is looked at critically (either by the artist or another party) doesn't mean that it's a judgement call on the artist themselves, rather just that there's ways to improve on an art piece for the next time, which is why lots of artists practice and present with thumbnails and preliminary sketches or various concept art that gets turned down a billion times, until there's a piece that's settled on. Awareness and self-control of an artists' mindspace can be half the battle, it just takes some self-assessment and mindfulness techniques to help. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@kraftytactician55295 жыл бұрын
The only problem is that some artists like me are unable to point out what's wrong with our drawing, like we know there's something wrong with it but can't point out what. This in turn prevents us from improving..
I am trying to learn to draw for my fashion course, I've been finding it incredibly frustrating and my lectures are completely useless at guiding me and teaching me as I've never drawn in my life and they don't care, they just keep demanding sketches and giving me crap about them. Im focusing on plus size mens clothes and getting anything to look even remotely like I visualise in my head has been impossible. I've resorted to literally tracing photos and dumbing down my ideas and concepts to the clothing that the person in the pic is wearing because I can't draw clothes let alone people no matter how hard I try. I honestly feel most times I'll never get it and I've not made an inch of progress in 2 yrs of study at least not in my eyes. I tried freehand drawing today only using the very basic outline of a person's image and I still can not do it. I fear it will never happen so bad was my attempt that that it sent me into a rage at myself and I just broke down. But I want to thank because your video calmed me down. I still don't think I'll ever be able to draw without tracing and that is not good cause I'll never be able to convey my ideas to buyers or bosses at this rate but at least I feel calmer thanks to you. I appreciate this video and I'll keep trying. I hope I've not made a huge mistake changing to this career.
@theresaantonia20584 жыл бұрын
Hey! Hope this answer is not coming too late. I was also a fashion student and couldn't draw. Actually after finishing the courses I find that my drawing skills just got better and better since I started to draw for fun again. While university the drawings were always connected with a lot of time pressure and stress for me, and went quite bad. Now I started drawing again. Simply by outlining a nice fashion drawing figure and "dressing her" myself by looking at lots of photos of street style photography or runways and mixing them together. For example: I like this silhouette, this collar with this pair of jeans and this shoe = all different pictures I got as inspirations and adding them all together to make a new design. So I learn to draw fabric/ shades/ shapes/.. step by step and the more I make these mixes the more confident I feel by drawing these figurines and clothes as I get used to it and that's my new trick that I really enjoy it!! Hope this helps!

But if you don't know how a coffee machine works, then good luck repairing one. All great digital artists I know are also great with other media, because almost all of them started out with other media. There's simply no hope that going digital will magically make you better, because you can brute force it. Because you can't. That's not how it works.

I drew a lot between 2008-2013, but never bothered to learn the fundamentals for whatever reason. I still aced art class in 8th grade, even by straying from what my teacher said to do. That boosted my ego to the fucking top. When that died down I was full on "oh no I can't draw for shit!" So to avoid a crash and burn in your artistic endeavors, LEARN THE FUNDAMENTALS!! People I know who learned that are still drawing and making amazing stuff!

I used to think that I would never be good at drawing, and everyone was better than me. I used to think that good artists (or even halfway decent artists) had some magical talent. I stopped drawing because I was a perfectionist and thought I could never be good. However, I came back to it. And now I'm proud of my drawing abilities and am improving every day. So a message to people who think they're bad at art: everyone starts somewhere. Nobody is naturally amazing at art. Keep practicing and you will improve.

To those doubting yourself It takes years of practice to start making what you want. You also have to let go of your self doubt. You may only be able to draw a lopsided circle, so keep drawing that lumpy oval and slowly improve on the way you draw that oval. One tip, hold your pencil or stylus vertical, and guide the pencil with your elbow. Not your wrist. This goes with anything, you have to have confidence in yourself or you will hinder your progress. It takes time, and you may not ever get recognition for what you do. Be proud of yourself when you manage to finally learn that difficult technique. Be your own cheerleader because there are millions of others that can be your hater.

I'm 24, and I spent somewhere around 18 years dismissing things like shapes and skeletons and stick figures that are part of constructing the image. I thought it wasted time, and it was completely pointless. The last 18 years I've been drawing, my art has been... alright. I spent most of those 18 years using bases, or tracing. It wasn't until recently that I finally got tired of bases. I'd been telling myself for 6 years that enough was enough, but I couldn't let go. Even when I didn't use bases, though (since you can't use bases on paper), I still didn't construct. It wasn't until 2016 that I finally started constructing the head, and I went through a severe emotional breakdown from the lack of understanding what I was doing. I took art class in high school, but I have no memory of learning things like this, no memory of ever properly learning the basics. It didn't help that my teacher hated anime, so I was being given no direction in how to not draw like cheap trash, only being told I wasn't allowed to draw what I was familiar with, and all heads were just circles like in western comics and cartoons. Anyway, I eventually got the hang of it, somewhat, but it wasn't enough. November, I moved from drawing on bases to tracing over bases. It was a little better, I could adapt the base to my desires, but when I tried to draw without it for a request, I couldn't. I had to find pieces of other things to trace. It made the result look strange. Finally, February of this year, I said enough. No more bases. I would finish whatever base-using projects I had left, and then no more. I tried roughly tracing things, and then redrawing over the rough trace. It was better, but things still weren't forming right. Then, just a week ago, I did it. After much nagging from my girlfriend, just to get her to shut up, I did it, I did a line-and-circles skeleton over the base, and deleted the base. Then, I added ovals. Then I drew my final shapes over the full skeleton with ovals. Halfway into it, I had to stop and stare. This couldn't be my work. It looked too good. I didn't have to fight the drawing to make it work. I didn't have to draw and redraw the limbs over and over again. It came out looking exactly like the image in my head, something I had never been able to do. I'm still in shock when I see it. It's really hard to believe that such ability was locked within me, waiting for me to just put the key in the damn door and turn it. You can't open a locked door without using the key. All it takes is a couple steps to pick it up.

Then I try to tell her, that I also started with weird drawings and just drew and drew until I was happy with my drawing and that's how I improved. I know that she can draw! But she does not want to just start and draw simple things, I think that she thinks that she has to be perfect and draw over-complex body’s. But then she doesn’t accept my little motivation and just rejects it... I mean when she does not want to start drawing, even tho she really wants to, then it's her loss. I think I will send her this... but the other problem is: She doesn’t really understand English, even tho we have English as a subject in school, but she isn’t that good in it. I don’t how to help her start drawing, because she really wants to.

She may well want to learn to draw but not be able to cope with the shame of being bad, so can't bring herself to get past that bit. Some don't seem to understand that different folk think and feel differently to themselves. One can only encourage her to try, nonjudgementally. It's her choice whether to overcome her disappointment at not being amazing from the start. No one needs to see one's attempts until one feels ok with them.

Towards the end of the class i realized that i loved doing this and wanted to become an artist. But as I grew older i thought art won't pay so i should look for a high paying job and do art as a side thing. I stopped for a long time, went to university and dropped out 3semesters in because i hated everything about it. The part with "confident lines" I would disagree, confident lines can be also like the example you showed as a bad example, especially in painting, less in illustration I think. I think everybody have to find their own way to bulid up an artwork. ( drawing, painting, etc. ) It also depends on which tools a person is using. Lines like that can easily be a first step sketch when ( for example ) you draw with charcoal. But other than that, great video teaching fundamentals, I usually don't like youtube videos teaching about art because it is very difficult to teach and not to impose your own style on people you are teaching. ( if that was the case everybody would draw exactly the same thing and it happens ) and sorry fo any mistakes, english is not my first language.
@Nathouuuutheone7 жыл бұрын
The thing with confident linew, though, is that the example given is really a "I'll just zig-zag all the way because I'm not sure where I'm going". it lacks finesse.
@AtomekKotalke7 жыл бұрын
I agree. Every stroke should be planned. But sometimes you can still end up with accidents. There are a lot of techniques of drawing. For example you can draw first not planned lines and then drew on them something different. Something like "draw a drawing from them". It can be a basis for sketch.
@MidoriMushrooms7 жыл бұрын
the lines thing made me immediately feel like shit. I prefer paintsketching or making a gigantic mess with construction, if I know what I'm trying to make then I can go over it later, but...I have never been called on this being a bad habit. :(

As others here have said, this might be the best video on how to get started drawing I've ever seen. Thank you for making it. Though I do disagree with one point you made about "hairy lines". I think drawing in that manner can be a useful crutch. For example, if someone struggles to get details right, using a bunch of shorter lines can make it easier. It can also be a stylistic choice. Even if this is not the case, one could still use it as needed, with a longer term goal of outgrowing this approach by creating fewer and cleaner lines.
@MattiasPilhede5 жыл бұрын
I think as I've developed more I've found that hairy lines and chicken scratchy lines don't really matter unless it's because you can not confidently put down a single line. For sketching go as wild and crazy as you feel like, as long as you get to feel out the shapes
@MasterStacona6 жыл бұрын
I fully disagree with something said here... things DO NOT get easier the better you get, it gets harder because you raise your own standards and need to at least, if not do better, for the next piece than the one before. So my advice is embrace being bad at art and enjoy it, do strive to get better, but you are only bad once so make sure you are enjoying the ride along the way and take in that moment and do not feel rushed to "get good" at drawing. The better you get, the harder it is to find improvements, because when you first are starting out it is very easy to find one thing to fix and improve on. The mistakes get fewer and fewer if you are actively improving over HUNDREDS and THOUSANDS of drawings and the mistakes get A LOT less obvious so they are harder to find. Another thing to do is remember to LOOK AT YOUR ART, a lot of people forget to do this and especially important to look back over large chunks of time and see how much you have improved. This grants a huge boost to your self esteem and showcases to yourself that, yes, you are indeed getting better! Wrapping this up, there is one thing that is true with "making things easier over time" is that you are innately going to do things better, more efficiently, and faster which means you have the time for more details and complex artwork since the simpler / more basic stuff gets easier for you, but then you end up doing the really hard and difficult work since you are looking for constant improvements after every piece. Just remember burn out is a thing, so pacing is in order! Very hard to over come burn out fatigue, so make sure you are still creating variety in other activities as you are on your drawing quest!

noone I’m not a believer of that theory. Drawing for years at a atelier with no improvement. Hours and hours of practice with no results. When I was 12 years old (I drew since 7) Me and my nephew decided to draw from a picture of Rambo we saw, my nephew NEVER picked up a pencil in his life back then unless for writing, well he drew me under the table. Drawing is TALENT, some more, some less, some nothing. Some discover their talent for drawing early in life, some late in life but it is talent. Same thing as you cannot learn to have the feeling for producing good music. You can learn the notes or play music from someone else, you can. But it’s talent to come up with your own music rhythms that sounds good. If you could learn it, everyone would be a Beethoven.

@@bennyvermeulen7255 I respect your opinion but your story represents just your experience with Art. Everyone can write their story and what we all talk about are not facts.

Mohammed Abbas He brings up his anecdote because, like many many other people, practice does NOT improve anything. Some are talented and can draw and some are not.

It has been 6 years and your video is still inspiring ✨Thank you for sharing. Today is my 7th day since I started to learn how to draw. I am infact still terrible 😅 But I started to see the difference between my first lines and circles, now I can finish circles at the start point 🥳 I know it won't be an easy way but I am so hyped! I want to update this comment beginning of the July 2024. I will share a video of my progress from 0 to 1 year of experience :)
