Great video. I'm definitely guilty of not shooting enough - it's either "ok, an hour's more footage" or lunch. Lunch always wins, which infuriates the guys in post-production. Which is also me.

3:36 The direction of moving across the screen also mimics how we read books. In the Western world left to right movement can infer a positive feeling, whereas moving right to left can infer a negative one. The same goes for the subject moving down or up within the scene. Moving down is in sync with gravity which feels easy, whereas moving up is fighting gravity which appears difficult. The consistency of movement applies to the camera movement too in a sequence of shots, keeping the same direction flows from one shot to the next but if you were to change it then it would break the mood.

I mean there are no rules but there are things that make video and photography more appealing to look at. So it's best to follow them and only subvert those 'rules' when you have a specific reason or story that would be improved by making it more unusual. Like the rule of thirds makes a video easier to watch and then the next shot being in the same third makes it less jarring. If you want to jarr your audience then go ahead, but it can just look rubbish or amateurish, hence why quick whip movements are used a lot because it allows you to break those rules by creating a transition. It gives the brain enough information to accept that something has changed. So definitely follow and understand why they are rules until you have a good reason not to.

I let friends borrow an old video camera on their vacations and then edit the video for them when they get home. (It’s my way of vicarious travel.) I STRESS for them to FILL the card with video so I have the best selection. I also give general tips since they are not photogs- don’t zoom from a moving vehicle 🤢, don’t walk while you’re filming 👣, and try to hold on to something to make your body a tripod. I swear every time they come back from a week trip with one hour’s worth of video, only about 10% being B-roll. 😣 And there’s always zoomed in video from the train, and a lot of unusable walking shots that stray between the scenery and their shoes.

it's basically extra footage to give more background or detail to the video your making. for example News, they can't just talk about something and not show what they're talking about, that's why they show footage of the events while the reporter is talking to help the audience understand, that would be called B-roll. hope that made sense I'm awful with examples
@kevinjolly2299
@kevinjolly2299 4 жыл бұрын
In news traditionally your interviews, two shots, reporter cutaways etc. comprise your A-roll. This is the main video for your story. Your b-roll is the additional video you need to tell your story. It's usuallu whatever the story is about. It's normally a series of wide, medium, tight shots. In cinema it can be more creative shots: tracking, rack focus, zooms, pans, tilts, etc any you need to make the story interesting and visually appealing to the viewer.

If you are doing a camera move from point A to point B, it's best to hold on the start and end points for much longer than you think you need to. Likewise, if you're shooting a shot of a static object, hold for at least a ten count. It gives you options in the edit.

Background lighting is very important, dare I say equally important to the facial illumination. The key is in the little things. I don't know how much video noise (if any) was cleaned in post but when you turned off that key light the quality was dope. You have a very decent (leaning towards impressive) camera. It seems we have similar taste in how the lighting of a room should be. Not to strong, from the side, which allows a soft naturalistic shadow to fall on your face and basically look like a better version of natural lighting. I call it "Twilight Lush". It's as if we're in the room with you not on some TV movie set.
