500-1000 bucks for your first paid gig in my eyes is bloody amazing
@yoda5385 жыл бұрын
Sure 500 - 1000 seems like a lot of money, but you got to take in account that you are probably filming an entire day. You have to edit that footage so count an extra week or so for editing ( especially when you're just beginning, and probably look at more Matti vids to find out how to make that vid look the absolute best you can.😉). And to get it even more depressing you won't land a job every week at the start, first Need to build up those connections. So in the end say you spend a total of 70 hrs to make that vid, you make around 8 - 14 bucks/hr. And this also has to make up for your down time.

I've done a lot of videos for my church, and one of the church members really enjoyed my videos I think, cause she came and asked me if I could do a video for the pharmacy she works at. Not the most exciting job ever, but it was still a super awesome experience anyway. Got paid a little bit. I'm 16 btw, if that motivates anyone.

Awesome Kevin, use this time to perfect your craft. in my previous business which wasn't anything to do with filming I basically did what Matti said, it took a little time and then I was contracted to Sony and then the flood gates opened, worked with many global companies. Keep at it if you want it bad enough and love what you do it will come, it only takes one door to open and perseverance, you have just started your filming future. All the best. :)

I actually started getting paid gigs, in an extremely competitive market!!!!, but mainly in the form of interviews and fashion photoshoots (I originally started with cars and Bmx action sport) which was a new avenue in my portfolio. I asked my clients what made them choose my services, most said it was my response time to their emails, personality and mainly the easy-going attitude with problem-solving on the job (I think I have a good PokerFace cause I felt the pressure on some occasions).

I'm happy to say that I actually got my first paid video recently. I interviewed a couple of kids that were being adopted for a fundraiser to help the couple adopting them. I really poured a ton of time into making the video the best I could, and probably put 10 to 15 hours into it aside from the filming itself for $100. I could have charged more probably, but considering it was for a fundraiser I figured I could drop the price a bit. I was very happy with the end result, and so were the couple. I had a ton of people afterwards tell me how much they loved the video and that I'm really good at that kind of thing. It was definitely a push for me to get better and pursue more opportunities in this field. Thank you for everything you've taught me and I will continue to support you.

Awesome and very important tips you gave to us Matti! To think about making money with filming is, like i think, in every mind of a filmmaker. But i think also one very important point is, that people have to work hard for that in this time. Cameras get better and better so its hard to convince a company to let you make a gig for them without a very good portfolio. I know some, who are thinking that they can make money with okay footage because they say those are great, but getting better and better takes time, so i think the most important fact is to take time to learn filming :) Thank you for your tips, helped me a lot!

"Okay, we'll do a test." But when I do the test and they're happy with it, they still don't want to pay me - or very little like 30 euros. I'm bit stuck there.

I almost never comment on a video but I just have to say this now. ok so first I want to say that this video helped me so much. Everything just kind of feels clearer now and it seems like I know what I have to do. I bought a 400$ Camcorder a few years ago, toghether with my brother and we've done so many films since then, even some really big projects. I think that I now have a pretty good understanding of camera technique. Now the problem is that the camcorder doesn't allow manual exposure control and it has a very small sensor so I can't get thet beautiful shallow depth of field that looks so great in broll but also in "normal" shots. I bought a Nikon d5300 2 months ago which I love for photos and that offers all the functionalities the camcorder doesn't. It can also shoot at a higher framerate (50fps). But the one big problem is autofocus, which works pretty food for photos but is just not useable for video. So I would probably have to use manual focus but this is only possible if there is a camera man. The bigger problem is that it is kind of hard to focus if you don't zoom in on the screen but then, you can't see your framing and don't know whether the shot looks good or not. Any advise for me? Even if not, thank you for reading that and sorry if my english is bad (I'm from Germany)
@akey69er5 жыл бұрын
JDP my D5300 is on eBay right now because of the clunky interface for video, its awful, 10 mins left on the auction... looking to get an M50 with the money but still need to put some extra... If selling both of your cameras and putting that pot into something that does everything for you then I think the best thing to do is get good at manual focus, learn the camera like it’s part of you and learn to love its flaws...

Matti! Grat Video. Actually I just had my first PAID job last Saturday 27th. How funny it is because you probably were editing this video that time :) Anyway I was folowing you on KZbin for a while and basically my way to get my first paid job was almost exactly as you sdaid. I've started by doing KZbin channel to practise and when I got some more experience in filming and editing, also upgraded my eqipment a bit, I offered my services for free for my friends who have small local business. When they saw the result they akesd me if I could film their wedding with exactly the same style. And now I have even more gigs booked for this summer! And as Matti said. Just film to have something to show beacause clients almost always want to see your work first. Thanks Matti. I probably wouldn't make it wthout that knowledge you are giving here on your channel! And for all you guys I have to say if you practise and if you want to be filmmakers just go all in and never stop. Also never stop learning. You will make it if you want it strong enough.

No rules against filming for a reel specifically. Especially for a low budget freelancer with no work, you can show what you're capable of. Also... ASK!!!! it works! Another method is by making the video and tagging the people you want to make a video for, soon they may ask you to do work for them kind of the same way Peter McKinnon joined James Coffee Co.
