Matt, I was kind of struck by your comment at 6:47 about how you would replace this coating at 12 to 18 months. My car is a "half-daily driver", garaged at home and driven to a covered work garage three times a week, and if the weather is bad I'll drive my Suburban. I'm guessing I'd get maybe three years out of CSL + EXOv5 if I went that route? I've been debating to myself about going diy or having a shop do a pro coating, but I keep coming back to how super-cool it would feel in the morning to see my shiny car and think, I did that.
@ObsessedGarage7 ай бұрын
Yep, you'll get much longer on a car that isn't used as much. I'd say 3 years would be a safe bet.

Matt, Diamond Glass is fantastic, and yes any sort of drying aid will get smeary on it. Just dry with a glass towel and all good.

My world's results of the Glass Coating has been amazing. I installed it on both of my vehicle's over a year ago that sit out in all of the elements 24/7 through all driving conditions and I'd say the coating has just diminished which I'm going to do a fresh installation soon.

I think Diamond Glass may be a good option for the Rivian and Raptor, as it is more abrasion resistant than a lot of glass coatings. The particle size of the coating solids must be pretty small based on the way it just gets absorbed into the glass, so I wonder if that helps durability because it isn't just sitting on top like some coatings do. My wife is much like Michelle in that she destroys drawers and has zero ability to manage her wipers. The coating has held up pretty well for her, and reapplication down the road is just as easy as the initial install. It does have a higher speed break than some, as it doesn't move off the glass real fast until 45-55 mph, so its a good option for vehicles that see a lot of highway use. Apparently the prep spray for Diamond Glass also has nano-diamonds in it as well, and I think it is supposed to act as a bit of primer for the coating. I figure the Swiss are pretty particular about this sort of thing, so I'll spend the few extra bucks on the prep spray they designed to go with it. There were quite a few people who didn't follow directions and used a different prep for both the glass and paint coatings, and then proceeded to leave negative reviews about the products. All I know is...I followed directions, used the right products and have had zero issues with these coatings. They have all been performing really well.

I would want the 50mL bottle just to be safe. If you use suede applicator, one bottle should do it. Many of the other sop up more coating. I find I use more. Yes, you can do it outside. Just do one panel at a time.

With regards to paint depth gauges, wouldn't getting a reading on the door jambs as a baseline be a wise move. I've read that the paint levels in the jambs are lower and that could serve as your caution level. Say you get 75 microns on the door jambs, and say the car is ranging 90s-120s. You could set the 75 micro level as a reference point that is more specific to the car. I would imagine it would be less likely for complications like body filler (bondo) as well. I'm not a paint guy. Just curious.

Almost as a product placement but in a bad way, I find it ironically hilarious the TRC video reflects your worse nightmare. Let me just say I'd love to help assist on ripping those Hex lights out of their studio when you come to visit! It would definitely be a good time because those lights have no place to exist anywhere, especially in a detailing studio. The flexibility of the CRE lights highlighted in the Rag Company garage tour is what every car guy should aspire to have without all the nonsense.

I can polish an entire vehicle with less than two batteries I wonder if maybe there’s something wrong with yours? My go to cutting pad is coarse blue wool from Rupes and I don’t have any issues with it but I’m also used to cutting with wool over microfiber so maybe that’s playing a role. I pre-ordered my cordless Rupes from OG back in November and I’ve been blown with it. It’s my favorite machine to polish with and I have the Milwaukee DA, and 13 other flex and Rupes machines to compare with. I’ve seen videos where the Rupes team states different things play a role in battery usage. Anyway love the content and appreciate what you and the team do. Can’t wait to see the new HQ!

Thanks Matt. The comment of nano diamond special windex was good 😂. The only thing I didn’t like about diamond glass is that it doesn’t repel water at low speeds like other glass coatings at 35 mph. Application is super nice though.

About the build quality - since this was a homologation car and BMW just wanted to beat Mercedes at DTM Races - they designed and built a race car first and then had to sell to the public because of the rules. So it is possible it was built to race spec quality and they picked off the best chassis to make the race cars. By the time the E36 came around - the bean counters might have got their hands on the project and likely controlled the cost so each car would not be a money loser. So it is possible these were built at a loss at the time - I know they did not sell well and sat at dealerships because it was new and the 325 had more torque from the 6 cylinder. Maybe a BMW historian can shed some light on whether these were built better than production cars so they can be raced.

@@ObsessedGarageare you sure you're not looking at the rinseless sponge? The red coating applicators that he is talking about are the small circular ones with the strap that goes over your fingers (like the old blue Optimum ones).
