Here's an Etude I wrote for Bari Sax player Andrea Edwards. Andrea is an excellent Bari player studying Jazz at KU. This Yardbird Suite Etude uses some harmonic (tri-tone) substitutions as well as Bebop vocabulary, diminished scale ideas, pentatonic ideas, displaced rhythmic groupings, sequential patterns, lydian dominant ideas, major and minor 2 -5 - 1 ideas, and 4 note cell or tetrad ideas. I had a lot of fun writing and learning this etude which took about 2 months to complete and teach to Andrea by ear.

Yes - that seems to really help - I only write it out after I've taught them the whole line. One thing I've had a challenge with is getting them to "think" of, or "know" the chords while they play the line.
