Pro tip: Some pilots also like to film their videos at a higher framerate, but post the video at exactly HALF of that framerate (Ex. Film at 60fps, but post in 30fps). This can allow you to have less motion blur while maintaining a more "cinematic" framerate. Try it out!
@Belly_Lint
@Belly_Lint 2 жыл бұрын
I've noticed better results with 60fps&1/120 shutter in reelsteady just because vibrations and quick turns cause more motion blur artifacting at 30fps. You can always add motion blur in post with davinci so I recommend you try that combo. It does require one additional step for editing but I'd love to here your thoughts on this.

Thanks Matt, The video was really helpful and in just the right amount of detail in my opinion. Especially the contents of the second half was the kind of thing a pilot might mention somewere on KZbin in a vlog as scattered information but having it all in one place is really handy if (when!) I ever need to come back to it. I don't think any other videos quite like it exist at the moment so you've just done a huge favour to a lot of people. Thanks again :) P.S. Elisha (the male version) is pronounced as shown here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fYjFfYawaap4ias

Same as 30 fps and 1/120 shutter. Why stick to 180° shutter rule and break it in an extra step when you could go with 270° in the beginning?

@@saturn_fpv Good point. Definitely worth more testing. I'll will try that out. This would be useful for GoPro's 9 and earlier due to the 4:3 resolution/fps restrictions.

Matt...agree with most of your settings (nicely done!). Always enjoy seeing what settings others are using. Regarding seeing what 'frame-rate' some filmed at (4:51) folks just need to be aware that it also depends on the GEAR ICON set in the lower right hand corner of the KZbin video. If your not selecting the highest option available then you could be looking looking at a lower video resolution. Frame-rates look correct but video resolution may be off. Not sure what your using for editing but worth mentioning (as I ran into this myself the other week). If shooting in 5K/30fps, then give PROXIES a try (if using Adobe Premiere Pro). Had zero issues using PROXY files for my 5K edits. Premiere makes this so easy now in 2022. Again, nicely done and explained!

Great Video! Another helpful GoPro Tip is shoot with Native color balance. GoPros limit colors to achieve color temps so "Native" lets all the color and light the sensor is receiving be recorded. It helps with low light grain and color accuracy. Note it will make red look more orange but there are LUTS to fix it.

Hey man. Great video as always - a great insight into settings I've steered clear of changing for fear of messing things up! I have a question relating to the exposure setting and choosing the right ND filter. I'm familiar with the exposure triangle from my photography days, but how do you choose which ND filter to use? In a DSLR you'll have a measure of exposure to work from before you take the shot, so do you take some test footage pre flight to see which is best or do you have any rule of thumb you work from?

Very informative for beginners but I'd like to point out a few things: 1. 24fps looks good in cinema because the projectors emit 24fps light. If you watch 24fps or European PAL 25fps or 50fps on a 60Hz Monitor or TV you get stutters (dropped frames). 2. The KZbin stats show exported video settings, not the actual recorded fps. This is another reason for stutters: your timeline and exported video should match the recorded video. Only exception is when you stretch or condense the footage (transform a 50 second 50fps clip into a faster moving 30fps 30 second clip or slower moving 60 second 60fps clip). 3. I disagree with pre vs post lense correction. If you choose linear in GoPro, it will not be native resolution anymore, it's cropped so it's less resolution, just because GoPro saves the file as 5.3k or 4k it doesn't mean it's the true sensor resolution. 4. All previous GoPros offered Superview only for 16:9, that's because it meant using the full 4:3 sensor information and squishing it to 16:9 (looks more distorted but RSGO knows exactly how to transform it back). Like you said, 4:3 should give higher detail. I assume it's a marketing thing to have introduced Superview to GoPro 10 4:3. 5. As stated in the other comment: instead of shooting 60fps and exporting in 30fps for "cinematic" look, just go for the 270° which means 30fps and 1/120 shutter 6. You could add the recommendation to upload to KZbin in highest resolution for less KZbin compression no matter the source meterial. 7. Another recommendation to find the right ND filter is to change shutter to check the brightness. Its quicker to change/adjust and each shutter step mean one step ND Filter.

Matt, you're the only guy who is smart enough to understand my question. When i fly fpv with my gopro 9 i fly upside down or knife edge through trees, but my gopro only films right side up. I can't lock the orientation to the orientation of the camera. It always films right side up...auto rotation. I've tried landscape mode, lock landscape, lock orientation, i even had it working for a minute but as soon as i started recording i would not show that the drone was upside down,, and when i do a roll it just bobbles and doesn't show the drone rolling,,,, how do you lock the screen during record or not record,,,I am frustrated they are making it so hard.

Personally, I leave my Shutter Speed at "AUTO" and the footage looks just fine. Same with White Balance but it's a personal preference. I just don't notice enough of a difference to keep messing with those settings. At least not on the GoPro10.

@@RGMGFitness depends video ur taking. If I leave it auto. Sometimes drone will point more up toward sky or sky and everything I would like in flim goes black. People talk about white balance shift mid video but I rarely see it very often. But video not changing white balance mid video makes it easier to edit post production. Yea there r times I leave everything on auto. Wish more of my cameras did like gopro and offer an at least iso range. 100 to 400 so I stopped it going any higher. Wish gopro made a lighter camera too

@Matt Pochwat Did you ever experience some microvibrations for Gopro 4k Footage after stabilizing it with reelsteady ? You recommend to you for instance 4K, 30FPS and Shutter 1/60 - With double Frame rate I have always issues when flying slowly or having low light conditions. I tryed to use 4K, 30 FPS and 1/120 Shutter so using the frame rate 4x -> That made it a bit better but still not 100 fixed. Any recommendations?

The 180 rule really only applies when you are slowing down the recorded footage in post. If you were to playback in real-time then you would want about 1/48th regardless. If you were to playback 120fps at 60fps then you would want 1/120 and if you were to play back that same 120fps at 30fps then you would want 1/240. Gerald Undone has a nice video on this. But then if you are using in camera stabilization you probably want as high of a shutter speed as you can so the stabilization works well.

I'm always confused about the Kelvin Color Temperature Scale Chart and the temp setting in our cameras. In our cameras, when we set it to 6500 or even higher, the color on our LCD screen or image the captured image turns orange-red. But in your chart at 14:45, 1000k is the orange red. Why is it different? Your chart is similar to the chart the flourescent lamps uses. Btw, I also use the same settings on the gopro. Mine is Session 5. I had to configure my samsung so that it doesn't upgrade the gopro app or else I won't be able to do manual adjustments.
@MattPochwat
@MattPochwat 2 жыл бұрын
Good question! The color on my chart is the color temperature of your environment. Indoor lights might be around 3500k and will give that orange-ish tone that you see on the chart I showed. That's why when you set your camera to 3500k, the GoPro screen will turn more blue. You're telling your GoPro that your environment is warm and the GoPro is trying to counteract that with the blue so that the end result is more balanced and white.

took me a few minutes to find 60Hz (for NTSC) and 50Hz (for PAL). In PAL mode you can't use 30fps at all however for UK/Europe viewers, you are watching back footage on 50hz electrical grid. So 60hz (USA) setup won't be the best option. just something to bare in mind.
