Build Show Expert Jake Bruton of Aarow Building (www.aarowbuild...) is back to answer “What Should I Use?” when it comes to floors & subfloors. He discusses the evaluation and selection of different floor framing methods. Additionally, Jake explains the importance of calculating live and dead loads for structural integrity. He presents three mock-ups of floor construction: traditional dimensional lumber, I-joists, and modern trusses; each has pros and cons regarding cost, availability, and utility accommodation. Ultimately, Jake stresses that industry standards, code requirements, and practical criteria like budget and local availability are vital resources to make informed decisions on floor framing methods.

Jake is my favorite. This is the real type of advice I want: not a simple answer, but a thorough understanding of why there is no simple answer.

If the reason trusses aren't mentioned in the Code when they are known to be superior to anything in the Code is because they need to be engineered and certified by the engineer, then all the Code needs to say is "trusses as engineered and certified by a suitably qualified and registered engineer" or something very like that, and then the trusses are there in the Code for anxious clients to see so they know it's all above-board.

"You're more likely to have more people in your kitchen, dining, or living room, than your bedroom, according to the code at least." Jake really is a building expert; it's not his first time building a sex dungeon.

My personal standard for any suspended floor is to meet the weight load capacity requirements of a nightclub dance floor. My late teens and early twenties are a long time ago, but I still find it totally plausible that twenty youngsters will crowd into the bathroom and start a really jump-up-and-down dance there. I don't want them falling through!

L/360 is the span length in inches divided by 360 which gives you the maximum allowed deflection at center span in inches. I see you corrected the explanation 😁

I wish I would have downloaded a copy of the very first video they did of this series. It was about Prosoco products/ liquid applied WRBs. I left a pretty detailed comment on the video about my experience with the product. The comment was gaining pretty good traction then the video got deleted. Makes me wonder if Prosoco told them to remove the video. Every since then I have to take what Matt talks about with a grain of salt.

How is it calculated for a cantilever floor joist? Where one end is hanging in space?
@jake.bruton.aarow.building
@jake.bruton.aarow.building 3 ай бұрын
There are elements in the code, something like 1’ cantilever needs 3’ support inward, however engineering is absolutely the way to go with unsupported systems.

No one will just say which is stronger, stiffer, and produces less bounce. If all things were equal, ie; all of them on 16 inch centers, who wins? No one will do a real test or comparison of them.

I thought you used Imperial in the USA unlike the rest of the world that uses the metric system Cause at 14 minutes as your talking about floor loading you talk about the tile council being metric??? Were they the group that put out "And the floors come crumbling down" which was a huge smash around rhe world and by all accounts it blew off the roof of the house!

I have not used the product. There are lots of great products on the market, I would talk to builders in your area. Lots of sublfoor choices come down to the make up of the MDI glue used in the flooring and how quickly it can get covered up and out of the elements. Advantech has a really high MDI content and this is why we choose it for our projects, it simply holds up to the weather.
