130000 miles is nothing.its all in people heads as 100k 30 years ago was rare as cars rotted before they made that mileage so anything over 100k people have a fit.

Computers creating tighter engine tolerances have raised mechanical quality and lifespan of engines. You're quite right. Until the 1980s, you wouldn't dream of purchasing a car with more than 60k miles. It would be finished, rattling banging and smoking. We live now in a fashion conscious disposable world.

EPIC CAR! I was a student when I bought my Mk3 Ghia 2006 2.0Tdci for £900 with 135,000 miles. I then started a new field marketing job, and in 2 years, I've got it up to 207,000 now. It's been the best purchase I've ever made. I love my Ford. It's got a lot of space, all the gadgets (Plus an amazing sound system with AUX!). Engine has been starting easily. (Despite sounding like a tractor) Tyres have been replaced a bit, couple of new shocks, new sus arm, split pipe now with a silicone upgrade, and a new secondary muffler. Other than that, it's flown through its MOTs... Next week I'm driving it to South Portugal for a couple weeks to live in. (plenty of space in the back for surf gear and a bed!) My friend and I actually lived in the back of it on a two week trip up to the Hebrides from Devon. (Surfboards on the roof ofc). A very comfortable campercar. And I'm 6ft 2in. Cheers for the Mondeo videos. Really appreciate it. I'll be looking back on these if I breakdown in the middle of nowhere! haha

If you worry about what your neighbours think and live the lifestyle you think they assume you should have you'll be working until you're retired, be perpetually paying out every month for a car you can't afford and you'll never have any money in the bank. No idea why you found it tiring on long journeys. I sold my MK3 Mondeo Ghia with 168,000 miles on the clock and regularly did 2000 mile round trips to France, doing 800 miles on the outbound and return journeys just stopping for fuel and Eurotunnel and didn't feel tired when I got out at the other end.

Luckily my neighbours are great so Im happy to drive anything!This car had a power loss issue that meant keeping it above 60mph was a battle, constant gear shifting, accelerator pinned to the floor boards and watching traffic so far ahead and behind as you cant slow down and speed up again - Mondeos are normally as relaxing as a comfy arm chair, Ive driven them across Europe too which is why I chose this, but I couldnt get to the bottom of this one

Other than getting the wheels refurbished, one tail light bulb & 2 coil springs replaced it was bullet proof reliable & looked practically new when it was part exchanged for my wife's new car.

My partner and I were looking for a high spec, diesel work horse especially as he has an hour commute to his new job. He has a Fiesta and I have a Volvo XC40 but we went for a 1.8TDCi Mondeo Titanium. It's fully loaded minus parking sensors, sunroof and sat nav but everything else is on it. I have no doubt that these engines are capable, I had a 1.8TDCi 2006 Focus Ghia 5 years ago and sold that at 190,000 miles (perfectly reliable until the end), after that I got a 2.0TDCi 2006 Mondeo Ghia X just like the one in this video just a hatchback instead, that only had 70,000 miles on it but had too many electrical faults at 90,000 so scrapped that. Then got a 2.0TDCi 2007 Focus CC3 with 120,000 miles, drove that every single day for 3 years and it looked fantastic, one of the best sound systems I've ever had in a car as well. I only sold it this year with 170,000 miles because I had a new XC40 on order. I regret selling the Focus CC every day, it had DPF issues shortly after I bought it but I sorted those and it took me all over the country and Europe on many occasions.

Bought a 1989 Volvo 240 GLT in late 2009 for £350 and had it for my daily driver and only car for 8 years of 10 years of ownership. Added 72,000miles in that time and pretty fault free. Auto gearbox mounts, prop centre bearing, tail output bearing leaked and gearbox support member bent. Symptom, gearbox banging against tunnel at around 203,000miles. Had it recovered and the biggest repair at £400 for parts and labour. Rad/hoses I fitted myself. rest just general age related or service parts. A good, reliable workhorse. Ran perfect at 234.000 when sold in late 2018 for £500. Have a 1996 940 B230FK auto petrol on 206,000. Again a good car. Paid £250 in 2017.

No dpf issues could that be because you drove it .....I mean everyday .... allowing for the dpf to kick in most days would keep everything ticking over nice ...but so many people their journey is less than 20 min lol 😉 GB is watching the results of the new rules for deisal cars ...once fully in other city's and councils will follow London in the name of clean air ..... And that's a funny one too....we have know about the harmful effect of deisal since at least 1979 books written on the subject ....how did the government not know , yes they new ...so they should pay individuals to get rid of deisal cars in my opinion ... Russia has been making electric buses for many years now exporting all over the world... London has only just recently started with electric buses much quieter and cleaner.... But EVs have a massive problem looming... expert's are suggesting that the Grid may fail to charge all these EVs being switched on over certain periods ....and the cost in terms of energy pollution will significantly rise ..... who's the winners really ? It's all a bit of a mess really 😬

Hi Roger, have you seen the rest of the videos on this one? It had an issue we could never get to the bottom of as these should be quick, and at town speeds it was good, but not on fast roads where it just ran out of puff, it did get mid 50s MPG though

In my own interpretation of bangernomics, I keep the car as many years as it will run without excessive repairs. Then I junk it when rust begins to be visible on the outer body. Up to now, I squeezed 14 years out of my Saturn SW2. I paid $2,700 CDN back then. Short-term bangernomics (like in this video) is not worth it. Long-term bangernomics will make you rich !

Good cars these mondys. My current one 55 plate 115bhp estate cost £475. It’s my daily work car, I’ve put 4000 miles on it in 3 months and everything works, bar the tired bushes lol. Most I’ve had to do is blank the egr valve. It’s on 152000 now and going strong! The usual faults on these are injectors, think mine are due to be reconditioned soon as there is a diesel knock on tickover when cold, and can be a bit sluggish from time to time, but once this is done I expect to get a good few years out of it. I’ve had tdci’s go over 300,000 miles before......

H Plate 1990 Volvo 940, 2.3L straight 4. Bought it for £450 at 150k miles, Sold it at 250k miles for £150. Only two issues during those 5y, once the brakes seized up and became red-hot, making me miss a flight to Germany, cold solder on dashboard causing it to cut off randomly (but turn it off and on it'd start again, a bit dangerous at 70mph), and a stone broke the window and another broke the headlight glass in two different times - but those were just bad luck. Had a 52' Mondeo Mk3 TDI 2L, got it for £600 at 60k miles, sold it for £100 at 120k miles when the clutch failed, only one back wheel bearing issue and some minor issues towards the end. Engine was still at 100% when I sold it. It made another 30k according to Gov MOT check site, sadly now no longer on the road. On the other hand, I didn't have luck with smaller cars, Focus, Ka, Micra K12, Volvo 93 all caused more trouble than their worth. Still driving a 54 Sports Ka but that's until it fails next MOT, whenever that might be, not making any big repairs on it any more. For Bangernomics to work you have to have a reliable, good, originally-expensive or simple car. 2000s onwards cars are getting a lot more complicated, a lot more electronic where non-mechanical things go bang and cost an arm and a leg to fix.

Iv'e had my 2001 Mk3. 2.0 petrol Mondeo estate for 17 years. Its the best vehicle I have ever had. Two exhausts, three batteries, several sets of tyres and a broken front coil spring is all it's needed. Oil and filter change every six months, new wipers every winter, air con service every two years. A top to toe polish every year for protection. It stills drives really well, is quiet and smooth, eats up motorway miles with ease and comfort. Still looks good (no rust anywhere) But it's worth virtually nothing! I am retired and considering buying my last car, what do I go for that will be as good as my faithful Mondie? I have a £30,000 budget, I kind of fancy a big-ish coupe, petrol and auto of course, about a year old and 10 to 12,000 miles under it's belt. I did have a 3.0 litre Opel Monza, pre family and liked that a lot, or do I take the car to my grave? Decisions, decisions!!
@furiousdriving
@furiousdriving 5 жыл бұрын
That is a tough choice. I guess for what the Mondeos worth you could hold on to it as a tip run car, but as for what to spend the money on for a coupe I guess personal taste is a big part of that. For ultimate reliability it would have to be a Lexus RC or a Subaru BRZ. Mercedes coupes are generally good, newer Audis are OK, but as you've loved the Mondeo how about a Mustang? Now they are right hand drive and you can have an ecoboost or V8
@q3b26
@q3b26 5 жыл бұрын
If you take a look at the Subaru BRZ it's worth a look at the Toyota GT86, same car and only £200 difference so it would depend on what sort of price you're able to get one at. The only coupé I like the look of at the moment is the Polestar 1. The Renault Laguna Coupé is my all time favourite but it's old and it's a Renault, says it all for reliability

Great vid this time around and the audio was slightly off but a HUGE improvement on previous attempts. Now .... My old bus was just £700 I think we paid and it had about 155k on the clock. Sure on my channel I've done a lot of work on the old girl BUT most of that was POST driving from the UK to the other side of Bulgaria and back. We came within about 20 miles of the Turkish boarder. Running costs are buttons I'll admit and parts are readily available with a lot of them very cheap. When we went to Europe I was regularly driving 400 to 600 miles a DAY getting there and getting back and I had no complaints at all about the comfort but then I have a fat ass so that maybe helped haha. Acceleration, well it's a 2.0 Turbo diesel and sure they're a little bit slugging but, (as proved on my vids), I was doing 140+ at times on the autobahn and it was STUNNING! She never missed a beat. I'm pulling close to the 170k mark now on the clock and I'd say mine is good for at least another 100k. As I've said before, you either get a great example of one of these that needs a little bit of work, (unless you really push it to the limit as I did mine driving across Europe), and can be a fantastic car that with the cruise control on will almost drive itself. We tackled the mountains in Bulgaria, Romania and Austria and she was brilliant. I just can't fault it. It's sad to see your car go, but if you were having issues with the comfort levels then I get it. But mine isn't for sale and will stay with me until I get to the point where the MOT needs me to spend at least £500 on parts just to get her through.

Yeah, much clearer now, still shame the Rode battery died. This one was lovey around town and great on a B road, so practical and (I think) good looking. It was very, very comfy but seemed to take a lot of effort to keep it buzzing at motorway speed, it just ran out of puff in the low 60s - it was the effort of keeping it at 70 or more that was exhausting. Id already planned on lowering it and picked the wheels I was going to fit, and the Car Play stereo that was going in. Like yours Im sure it will go on for another 100k miles no problem if the new owner keeps changing the oil, but he mostly drives around town so it should be ideal for him

A lot of effort to keep it at 70 and ran out of puff in the low 60's? Woe!! That engine was poorly! Mine is fantastic unless you're like my wife and too lazy to change gear but once it gets to around 1,700 revs the turbo started kicking in and it is reasonably quick. I'll admit zero to 60 is a bit sluggish from standing but there's no issues rejoining the motorway from the services or picking up on an overtake but I think the turbo needs a good clean and the cat. It does sound like your was choked up so I kinda understand why you've moved on.
@furiousdriving
@furiousdriving 6 жыл бұрын
Mine was the opposite, 0-60 was good, 0-40 brilliant, its not an RPM issue as low speed/over 2500rpm its quick with got grunt but at high speed and the same RPM gutless. Maybe a fuel delivery issue? Ill never know now, which is annoying but sometimes the expense of finding out isn't worth it, and Ive spent too much getting here already!
@TheFakeRussian
@TheFakeRussian 6 жыл бұрын
I'd have said it was an EGR, cat or turbo problem. That Wynns stuff was reasonably effective with mine though I have a feeling the cat need a good clean with an air line which I'll do when I take the front down pipe off to replace it as the flexi has gone. I'll give the O2 sensor and lamba sensor a clean too, (assuming it has a lamba sensor ... Think they may be only on petrol engines --- Cue 3 hours of looking for something that doesn't exist haha)
@furiousdriving

Thats time well spent!!! Id have spent time hunting for the cat/DPF but my mechanic friend pointed out it didn't have one... I thought all the same, but I changed the turbo, tried a new EGR with and without blanking plate and cleaned out the EGR manifold and used several bottles of Wynns and similar. Also thought it might be a split turbo hose but couldnt find anything with it on a 4 post. A mystery. Worth remembering my last company cars were 300bhp Cupras so everything feels slow now...

It's possible to daily an old car but you need to be lucky finding the right car as some can be money pits. The problem is getting one thats been well maintained, I use a 2003 Seat Leon TDI on a 70 mile commute. I trust the car since I've owned it for 13 years and know what's gone wrong and been fixed. You do need to know when it's time to move on, personally I have yearly £1,000 budget for maintenance and servicing. If it becomes unreliable or regularly uses all of that money in a year then it'll be time to say goodbye. Not sure what I'd get to replace it since it'll happily keep up with motorway traffic and returns over 55mpg.

I've had a mk3 2.0 duratec ghia x which did around 34mpg but this mk4 I have now is smoother, quieter and responds better. To be fair though the mk3's previous owners were a bit neglectful. In terms of comfort my car is way better especially on long journeys, the suspension isn't tired and the steering is tight and there are no rattles. Diesels are fine when new but as they age the list of things to go wrong means that any fuel saving could be offset by high maintenance costs. Update I'm now doing 39mpg 💪👍

Now drive a W202 5 cyl Td - and believe me..that puts a massive grin on my face every time I leave the petrolheads at the lights.. I get the grin..and I gets the 40+mpg..unlike you..

Running cheap fuel does these or no other car no good at all....Shell or BP every fill up and you wont have turbo or injector egr valve issues. My old 130bhp was still on original injectors, egr valve and fuel pump at 200k miles. The current 130bhp 2005 mondeo im using has been in the family from 2 years old and 20k miles and is now on 130k, always serviced with genuine parts has never needed anything apart from a bottom pulley.....still does over 50mpg and I'm putting nearly 100 miles a day

You clearly state in the video the mechanics are fine, but complain a lot about the comfort-or perceived lack of when behind the wheel on longer journeys...did you omit something about the engine that will explain this contradiction of commentary?...
@furiousdriving
@furiousdriving 5 жыл бұрын
It was a mechanical issue that made it uncomfortable. Because maintaining motorway speed meant pinning the throttle to the floor - and I mean hard to the boards for the whole journey unless letting off to allow faster traffic past, and then pinning it again to try and regain momentum - I was finishing journeys with an aching hip, leg and ankle, not to mention mentally wearing watching traffic so much further ahead and behind to plan for maintaining speed as I had to pull in for everything going over 60 and would lose speed on any incline. The seats were fine and fine pliant and below 50mph it was a joy and responsive but as I often do 1000 miles of mostly motorway driving a week it was just draining to use, my Rover 2000 is more relaxing at 70mph

I love an old Rover-P5 all the way for me though!...maybe I missed some of this in the video, it does sound like a grating experience for you-I can only counter by relating motorway drives in my 06 TDCI Estate, bought 2 years ago for £1000 is certainly different. No issues with power, and can still pull in 6th on an incline...still, something is always in the post for an owner of the older car-that is our dice!...

@furiousdriving
@furiousdriving 5 жыл бұрын
Generally Mondeos are quick but this one wasn't too fast, this would run out of puff in the high 50s and creep towards 70 eventually. Thats not too fast, especially as I drive in Europe a lot where 80 is the limit! I wouldn't argue with 20 limits past schools and on housing estates, but the 70 limit is 50 years out of date, with the capability of modern cars (as in anything young than 30 years!) there's no reason we couldn't have an 80 or 85 limit on the motorway

@@furiousdriving agree the limit is out of date ...ask any traffic cop if we should increase the limit almost all will say absolutely no way ...Humans can not take in all the amount of info the brain needs to compute when driving fast ....only a few people out of thousands can ....this means we must keep speed limits low ...it's not all about you and what you can do ....it's about a broad social spectrum....your lucky if your shown how to drive fast , and regular updates but the rest out there on our roads can not drive at speed ....to many distractions , in and out of the car .....eg who last worked on the car in front steering , suddenly there is a crash nothing to do with you but you can't avoid it because a clown worked on that car ....if speeds are increased in this country many more accidents and death's would happen .... speeding is the killer ....the G force alone breaks necks , back, and more .... Most people don't even know what correct tyre pressure should be in their tyres ....and that's why we can't allow road s to raise speed national limit ....some states are 45mph or 50mph on free way they too know that increasing the speed would lead to far more death and serious injury... If people want to enjoy speed they need to go to a race track ....pay , have all the emergency service ready on hand , be in the right conditions with the right help when needed..... remember the highway , motorway is a much more dangerous place to be on than any race track .... I enjoyed the video , it was a very well done video ...thank you and please make many more . GT .

Until you've driven a really bad example of a car you won't understand. This was physically exhausting to do a long drive in - worse than any classic Ive owned or driven. Even harder work than the 1 litre rental Punto I had to drive from Kent to Hull and back, in a day, in torrential rain (and do a job in Hull). Just keeping the Mondeo above 60 feels like driving in an endurance race. Find something running on 3 cylinders and drive it non stop for 4 hours then come back

The Sat Nav doesn’t work - So what? You can buy a brand new car - such as an Astra - with Android Auto but find that the bloody “intelligent Link” doesn’t work with your phone. So just like a 15 year old banger, you have to run Android Auto stand-alone on your phone connected to the audio aux socket. And the same goes for the webcam - because no fucking new car has one installed as standard or as an option. And at least the 15 year old banger has a spare wheel so that you don’t have to call out a rescue company when you get the inevitable puncture - as you do with most modern cars. And if the 15 year old banger does break down it is probably 100 times more likely it will be fixed at the roadside - most new cars are so complex that when the do fail it is frequently in the electronic systems - which means the car has to be carried away to a garage. And don’t even get me started on breakdowns of hybrids or electric cars - these pretty much always mandate “carry away” in the event of breakdown. And what is the point in spending hard earned cash on massive depreciation costs just to bugger up your suspension in the plethora of potholes that British roads have now become. Nobody wants a diesel - hardly surprising since the eco-warriors and leftist politicians have pretty much declared they want these cars removed from existence. During the Second World War Germany ran submarines across all the seas of the world using a hybrid combination of Diesel engines and electric batteries. Yet no car manufacturer has married up a modern, reliable and efficient diesel up with a hybrid electric system. Car “economics” is just marketing bullshit - as are all the arguments about carbon dioxide emissions. Sorry just have to get that off my chest - my diesel car will soon be needing it’s MOT test - which operates more to take reliable cars off the road than it is about safety nowadays. It will probably fail because it doesn’t have enough “eco warrior” energy sapping crap systems on it. We will probably all end up being forced to drive electric “mobility scooter” cars - and have to suffer the consequent brownouts of our national grid system. Perhaps we should go back to horse and carts - that would make the ecologists happy - but then we would have to suffer the animal rights activists.

haha, excellent rant! My 10 year old TomTom is still fantastic and doesnt use any mobile data when Im abroad. I was just shocked how much anyone could charge for a used nav DVD for a 15 year old car! I think Merc did a diesel electric E Class a couple of years ago, not sure though. The MOT is getting harder for good inexpensive cars to get through, its getting ridiculous reversing lights a fail? Seriously!

None of the MK3 Mondeo diesel engines ever had a DPF fitted so they're able to cope with lots of shorter journeys a lot better than modern diesels, which need a bit more care due to the DPFs that are now fitted.
