I just came across your video on how to replace front struts and I’m telling you you did more work than what’s necessary try looking up Vegas Elvis Vegas videos and replace front struts you don’t have to take all that shit off. 12/12/2020

I used this tutorial to replace the struts on my 2000 300M. I got the job done in 5 hrs, was easier with 2 to help hold... but this was very useful to me.

What size wrench did you use to loosen the nut 1:33 seconds into the video. I tried to put a wrench on it, but none fit tightly. Thanks.

Thanks for the video. Curious as to why you removed the brake assembly. I did that on the first one, and didn't on the second and it was much faster. Also curious why you didn't use a ball joints splitter or pickle fork instead of whacking the shock arm. Thanks again!
@bobotech5 жыл бұрын
Whacking the tie rod mount on the strut instead of using a pickle fork saves the boot and the tie rod end. If the tie rod is good, you can ruin the grease boot by using a pickle fork. You can also rent a tie rod end press that will also save the tie rod end but using a big hammer on the tie rod end mounting is easy and free. As for the caliper, removing it doesn't really save any time but it just prevents it from being damaged during replace/removal of strut.

Nice video. Like that you used a torque wrench for assembly.

I used this video to change my 2004 Dodge Intrepid. Great video. The struts were very rusted and I had to spray numerous times with PB Blaster. One side, I could not get the vertical sway bar to unfreeze. I had to cut the lower bolt off and buy a new one. Thanks!

Now how do you do the rear on the 300m
@jsharvey19617 жыл бұрын
It appears the bolts mounting the knuckle can only be in one position (no adjustment). Therefore I assume an alignment is not needed after doing this. Is that correct?

LH Platform owners - Get ready to do a lot of these if you plan on keeping the car. Between my 2 M's (99+00) I've probly got $5500 between replacing shit on the garbage front ends of these. M's are nearly the perfect car as far as FWD Luxury Sports Sedan goes but those fucking Front ENd (WHeel bearings, struts, tie rods every 15K. Rack will go some day). Its like fuck, man.

I have a 99 with the PHP and still have original parts except for the struts and spring isolators. No problems at all.

How will I know if the rack needs replacing? My '03 M is making clunking noises over small imperfections in the road at low speed. Took it to the dealer for diagnosis. They want to replace the rack, struts, inner tie rods, and sway bar links. Parts and labor for just the rack is $3200.
@ATCRyderX8 ай бұрын
@@jselectronics8215 If you don't have a lift & all that other stuff has gone; Don't even bother. Otherwise: Google it. Keep in mind, M's use MacPherson Struts so you don't care about any other style front ends if you read generic advice. However, if you get a copy/PDF of a LH Platform Service Manual (98-04); it'll tell you *exactly* how/why/what. Although, It's probably just Sway Bar Bushings & Tie Rod Ends. All that shits bad but both your front wheel bearings are fine? I'd imagine at least $2200 of that $3300 is the Rack. Get all the Mopar/Chrysler MPN's off the RO/Invoice you should've recieved, Compare the parts costs & buy the parts online that're cheaper (preferably real Mopar not Wang Chung crap). That should cut a big portion of that price down, Bring your own parts & pay the labor so it's done correctly & with a warranty of some kind (30-90 days usually at a real dealership).

@@jselectronics8215 I just typed a whole reply to you & it's gone. Fuck this motherfucking filth website. So the TLDR (or TLCR - CANT READ) is: Google it or GET a real copy/PDF of the 98-04 LH Platform Service Manual which will tell you all the Hows/Whys, Buy the MOPAR Parts yourself to save $ using the Mopar P/N's on the Invoice/RO you should've got from the dealership & have them do the work. Good luck.

How similar is this process vs. replacing the rear struts? Also, do you know if the rear struts have a left and right or are they universal? (I know the front have left and right but not sure about the rear). Thx.
@MattsMotorz10 жыл бұрын
Never did the rear struts on this particular car, but normally they are about the same procedure and difficulty. I believe the rear struts on this car are universal and don't have a specific side.

MattsMotorz Thanks. Great videos btw. Love to see more on the 2000 300m as I am trying to keep that same car going for my son in college.

@@MattsMotorz I hope this helps someone. WARNING: The rear struts are nothing close to replacing the front struts. A real pain in the butt. I had the bolts drilled out. It took about 2 weeks with various equipment changes and about 2 dozen broken drill bits. Cheap drill bits from Harbor Freight don't work. De Walt's drills bits aren't bad, but still a lot of labor. Use wired powerful drill only (wireless tools just junk with plastic parts). Monroe Spectrum - nice replacement as rear OEM

I was told there was something about compressing the spring in order to change all this out, but I didn't see that here.. was I misinformed?
@MattsMotorz10 жыл бұрын
I replaced the struts AND spring assemblys as a whole, therefore no spring compression was necessary. If you ONLY wanted to replace the struts and not the coil springs, then you would need to compress the springs and remove them to get to the struts.
@alexcruz10799 жыл бұрын
I just hit a pot hole and the strut was hitting the tire and it was the weirdest thing but I guess that the strut was bad. Should I replace both front struts?

What kind of strut did you buy/recommend? Having trouble figuring which brand I should get. Monroe or KYB🤔
@sookoll237 жыл бұрын
It's called a strut assembly, there are monroe, KYB and other strut assemblies available. At least I can see them on rockauto. HOWEVER You may run into problems with these assemblies. Namely, the driver-side strut bearing can be problematic on aftermarket assemblies. You're best off using OEM bearings, even if you use aftermarket struts, springs, etc. However, you will need a spring compression tool if you build your own strut assembly from parts.

@lasvegas56033 жыл бұрын
@@soyews you don’t need more room, I’ve been wrenching for over 40+ years and I’m telling you that you did more than necessary, but you do whatever you want.
@jessedorsettii9988 Жыл бұрын
I agree it's more work and I also agree it gives more room. Also, it's a good way to do preventative maintenance. I noticed my outer pads are more worn than the inner. Not a bad idea to take it off and lube the pistons to keep it working smoothly or if the brakes are needing replacement, go ahead and do that too while it's all off. Either way, your car and your brakes will appreciate it.
