Considering how stock the Bronco is (a few suspension upgrades and other minor bolt ons) and how utterly custom the Banana is (nothing Cherokee left under it) - I'd say the Bronco did an amazing job - it made it through every challenge, it basically dominated the sand chute, and it was right with the Banana on the rocks and the slow drag...

I'm a Bronco owner and I was completely sure that the Banana was going to be the better rock crawler. But I was surprised at how competitive the Bronco was in this matchup and how well it hung in there! The Banana is a custom built rig with a suspension designed for rock crawling. The Bronco suspension is factory stock on a daily driver chassis! I think that this video showed the Bronco at near it's limits rock crawling while the Banana is capable of a lot more! Great video!

I totally agree. However I have the Badlands w/ SAS so it may have done a little better but man the Bronco really did put up a fight - STOCK. 🙌🙏
@RealCadde Жыл бұрын
What's even more amazing is that the Bronco came really capable from the factory already. The changes made were made to make it better at the kinds of obstacles it encounters in Hurricane. But it was already pretty good from the factory and that's really a unicorn when it comes to factory cars. The Banana is custom built EXACTLY for these kinds of obstacles and there's nothing factory about it as far as the suspension, drive line and everything that matters for its progression on a trail goes. A factory XJ vs a factory Bronco would see the Bronco win everything every time. And that's what's scaring Matt the most, not that Hefe is going to make the Bronco compete with the Banana, but the fact with only a hand few modifications the Bronco is already where it's at and there's still plenty of room for improvement. What scares Matt is that he might have to make his next recovery vehicle based off a Bronco.
@bigredc222 Жыл бұрын
I agree with everything you wrote. The main difference is the cost, you need to be making a good living to afford a Bronco, but most anyone with mechanical skills can build a banana little by little. Fun Fact, the reason Ford went with IFS on the Bronco, is on-road handling. Yes solid axels do better rock crawling, but 99% of people will never need what the difference is. After the trail, you re-engage the sway bar and now you have great handling and ride.

Solid Axles are hands down superior when it comes to rock crawling. You can only get so far with IFS. But as you said, IFS is better for speeding up hills like with Sand Chute. Or speeding through the dunes as the ride will be more smoother and suspension will handle far better on IFS.

But if I had to pick up a rig in Phoenix, or Las Vegas, or Salt Lake City, and drive it to Sand Hollow and go wheeling, I will take the bronco every day. It will go 90% of the place of the Banana will, and it’s basically a daily driver. It’s a production vehicle with bolt-on upgrades that any enthusiast can do.

The Bronco also has the advantage of a flat torque plateau from the turbo engine, so its power "peak" is wider, combined with all those gears to stay in the power peak, and most importantly, those 10 speeds lock the converter almost immediately, there's no power loss through the converter. Real world the Bronco probably has about 30% better power to weight at the wheels, which explains the time difference on the chute.
