My dad ran International Scout II's for 4x4ing. I was raised turning those hubs in. After that he would put it in 4Lo and crawl around the southern oregon mountains. Lo was so lo at some point my dad would open the door and step out, walking beside us, or climb onto the hood while the car is still moving. This was the cue for me or my sister to hop in the drivers seat and take over. There was always so much excited anticipation after the hubs were turned in and that shift to 4lo happened. The absolute best memories!

A lot of newer 4wd vehicles don't have either manual or automatic hubs. The front drive train is always connected to the wheels, and the front diff and driveshaft always spin. Something else that you wouldn't know unless you have owned a 4wd with manual hubs, is that unlocking the hubs at any time during the winter will cause it to snow.
@roberthudson1959

And the bad thing about that is that you are sternly warned against driving on dry pavement with the hubs locked.

Ford Super Duty still has locking hubs. They are all automatic but can still be manually locked if the auto function fails and are just as strong as manual. RAM and GM trucks use a center axle disconnect which decouples one side of the axle to the wheel, resulting in not turning the ring gear and front driveshaft while not in 4wd

The hub thing in the beginning... Correct me if i am wrong, but i would explain it that way: In newer/modern systems the wheelhubs are always connected to the axles. They don't have the part that makes it possible to lock an unlock the hubs to the axles. And so even when in 2wd the wheels and axles turn when the car is moving. The only thing that gets connected or disconnected is the power transfer to the front axle inside the transfer case. With lockable hubs you can disconnect the drivetrain to the front axle on the wheel side and on the transfer case side. This means the driveshaft to the front, the front diff and the axles to the wheelhubs don't necessarily need to turn when the wheels get turned. And that (at least theoretically if i am not mistaken) results in a possibe fuel saving as the turning of the axles and driveshaft means drag and rotational mass that needs to be accellerated into rotation and to a stop and in less wear of the front diff. But there needs to be an additional mechanical piece at each wheelhub to lock and unlock. And with most modern cars those additional parts are left out. (for convenience of the driver and costs i would think) And the fuel savings probably are more calculatable on paper in theory than really that drastic measurable in reality. But i have never seen automatic locking hubs like it sounds Tomtom mentioned. (but that may just be me).

Manual hubs are the best. I added them to my Ram 3500. Now I have 2 low when moving my camper, and that is a big help.

Everything I grew up with had auto-lockers from the 1967 CJ5 to the 88 Dakota to the 95 Chevy. First time I drove a buddy's Ford and had to get out to lock the hubs, I thought his transfer case was broken. I've made fun of Ford's manual lockers ever since. I told him "dang, they don't think you're already getting enough exercise getting out to fix it every couple miles, so they want you to get out before you go up a hill too."

@@michaelc.3812 my Aventon sinch has a 50 mile range. I have a solar panel with a voltage control box. I usually just bring my charger and when I’m driving into Moab I charge using my 400 watt inverter. I also have a 12 volt battery in my camper van with a. 1000 w inverter. I rarely ride more than 50 miles so furring lunch I just charge as I drive. You can also park the bike bnext to an outlet. National park Maintanace areas have plugs. Or you take the battery out and charge it in a coffee shop many choices. I’m sure matt would let me borrow his cigarette lighter plug and I could ride along and help his crew out on a tow.

@@michaelc.3812Depending on the bike they’ve got removable batteries and quite a few have a 15-20 mile range on all electric. If you’re peddling and just using electric for assist it’ll go farther. And, might be able to swap out batteries and keep going.

I've owned 3 Jeep Cherokee and the older 2000 down wiring is cheap. I had problems with the drivers door mostly. I drove them for around 15 years. One 96 had 130, 000 on it. I gave 5 grand and drove it 6 years. Yoke seal, brakes and tires were all I did besides my own service. This thing seen pretty tough use offroad. Highway everyday. Factory locking rear made a huge difference but I always dropped air pressure in bad spots, (33" where used by most at the time, so ruts weren't like today) It had around 300,000 when I sold it. Next a 99 I did the same with close to same cost. Power everything and the door wiring issue arrived. Saw this, with a few others had. Back then I had remarks like, you drive a 4x4 station wagon. I would laugh thinking no payment, tough as nails, room for my gear and with a little cleaning I would've head out anywhere because I knew their capabilities and reliability. I put a 100,000 give or take on it. 2008 was the trouble child. I put around 50,000 on it and sent it on its way. I have yet to find a better all around vehicle for the outdoors stuff I do. Trailer and or reciever hitch rack is good to have. Looking for a vehicle that is similar, to do the same thing with now.
