The other thing that will fool you on these old chevys about a possible rear main seal is a leaking oil pressure sending unit. It's above the rear main so if that sending unit leaks it drips down and you'll think it's a rear main. Old chevys also had a tendency to leak from the front left inboard axle seal. Above that seal is a large round plastic cover with a vent tube attachment. That cover can also leak and fool you into thinking the axle seal is leaking.
@MattsShop2 ай бұрын
Yeah, it's true. Those seals will leak down and trick you. You'll think the rear main seal leaks, and it doesn't. Most guys keep saying they swapped the rear main seal, and it still leaks. That's why they have problems.

@ASEWorldClassTech5 ай бұрын
There were allot of things you left out. Allot of times leaks towards the rear of the oil pan can come from a Cam Sensor on Gen 3 & lower or the Oil pressure sending unit. They will leak oil down and onto your starter bolts and oil filter. Also the rear main seal & cover gasket like to leak oil as well. The rear main seal cover gasket is overlooked allot. Also the reason you have moisture on the oil cap is because your PCV system isn't working correctly. Some engines have a make shift PCV valve that's not really a valve but the little tiny port on the Driver Side valve cover "The Dirty Side" gets clogged. That is the port that dumps oil into your intake manifold. On some LS engines GM has a updated Drivers Side Valve Cover. Good Luck!

Owner since new of a 99' Silverado LT, 5.3 liter, 4x4. 200+k miles. Can not complain on the engine at all. Still runs well with general prescribed maintenance. Best part of the truck. Well done Gm! However, it does have assorted oil leaks. Miracle, lucky for those that do not. Short of seal replacements, within ease, all are original, but reality is they usually fail with age. All rejuvinator additives, in my case maybe slow the drips down. My question, if you could estimate your hours, or a shops/mechanics time on replacing all the seals as you have done on the Avalanche, what would estimate, realistically, not "repair book" shop hours, on realistic time for replacement as you have done on the Avalanche?

My 2006 5.3l with 165k on it burns or leaks about a quart every 3000 miles. On mine if it has barely any oil in the dipstick and I add a quart it will take it to full mark. I basically run it for 3k miles, add a quart, and then run it until it gets low again and do a change. Equates to about 6-7k mile oil change interval.

My 5.7 litre Chevrolet Gen3 LS1 V8 engine is fitted into a 2002 model Holden VY SS Commodore which was built in Australia & it's pretty much the same engine as Holden put into the left hand drive Pontiac GTO then exported to North America. According to Holden, it takes as little over a quart of oil (1.1 litres) to bring the oil level back up to the full mark from the add mark,I normally add 1 litre of oil at the 5000 kilometre or 3000 mile mark because last time It burned through that much oil by then. I run 10W40 full synthetic engine oil due to how hot it gets in Australia although Holden do recommend using a 10W30 grade of oil,1000 kilometres (600 miles) before the last oil change I had to add another litre of oil but I used some 15W40 semi synthetic engine oil which I had lying around the shed because I didn't want to spend $23 AUD on a litre or a quart of semi synthetic engine oil. The engine doesn't appear to be blowing smoke & it's just clocked over past 400,000 kilometres (248,550 miles) & Holden considers anything below 2.5 litres or quarts oil consumption every 10,000 kilometres is acceptable. I might have some leaking valve stem oil seals which are just a tad leaky but I am not too worried about it, mine doesn't leak externally since I have resealed the engine & I have recently resealed the valve rocker covers which stopped it leaking oil so we'll see what its oil consumption is now after I replaced the oil seals !

I know what you mean. I haven't had any problems with the plastic pieces falling off. They don't look good once the plastic turns from black to gray.

I have a 99 silverado with a 5.3 vortec. Im having issues with what I think may be high oil pressure resulting in my filter and oil pan gaskets leaking. When truck idles it sits at 40 psi… then I start accelerating and it will pick up to about 60 psi, and if i floor it it goes up to 80 psi. I feel that that is high oil pressure and some components may need to be changed, can someone let me know if these oil pressure readings are high? Can someone share their oil pressure temps
