Some Kind of Monster is one of the best riffs Metallica have written..

I think this album has copped way too much hate. Some absolutely huge riffs and they’re so fun to play. Nicely done man.

1. My World 2. Dirty Window 3. My World … again 4. Sweet Amber I randomly came across the We Did it Again song from 01-02 that sampled unreleased shit from the Presidio/St Anger sessions with Ja Rule … shit song but heavy riffs lol, seems to be tuned the same as Unnamed Feeling (Drop A# I believe). Hopefully some of that stuff makes its way on the eventual St Anger box set, there was great potential on most of these songs, they just weren’t in the headspace to truly polish them even just the hair more they needed to be classics

Ive always wondered how the album would have worked and sounded were it either in Drop D. Or half a step down from Standard. I think the constant battering of drop C in conjunction with no solos make the album sound muddy and all too samey. Frantic , My World and Sweet Amber are fantastic songs that, with added soloing, some editing ,and more epic production could have lifted them to higher places. Meanwhile, The UnNamed Feeling! Jesus- Imagine that with an "Unforgiven" style solo only to erupt into something else. That song could have been as Epic and Collossal as Outlaw Torn. UnNamed Feeling with an S&M makeover. Absolute Wow. I totally respect and understand how and why St. Anger is the way it is. For the band it was the ultimate release of alllll that had happened and was meant to sound uncompromisingly gritty, ugly and dirty. Uncomfortable. I get it.🤘👍 At the same time, Ive always imagined a version of it with 80s/Black Album inspired solos, and some orchestration to UnNamed Feeling. What an Album that would have been.

Personally I love St. Anger. Obviously it’s far from their greatest album, but let’s face it. It’s hated on because of the snare, no solos, mixing and mostly because it’s Metallica breaking their mould once and for all. The mixing fits perfectly with James’ emotions and anger and they uncertainty facing Metallica and their future. I firmly believe if that album was produced by anyone other than Metallica, it wouldn’t be as hated. If any album should be hated for the way it was mixed, it’s definitely Death Magnetic. That’s the biggest killer for me on that album
