BLUF: 1. Your location determines the MOS. So your choices may be limited unless you are will to travel (see point #2) 2. Your unit may be far away which requires you to drive/fly (1 hour drive time is about the average) 3. You don't get the full benefits like active duty (reduced GI Bill, paid housing, paid medical insurance, etc) 4. Drill Pay is different from active duty pay. 5. Your unit will have a huge effect on your experience, more so than active duty. Some units are great, others have no motivation. 6. 1-weekend month / 2 weeks a year can be worked around your work and family life schedule (somewhat).

Also, if you join a Civil Affairs or PSYOP unit, you can forget about just 1 weekend a month and 2 weeks in the summer. They're busier than the rest of USAR and have more training going on. Upside, you can go to more schools with less hoops to jump through and more than likely you'll be on jump status. Not all of them are airborne units but most are. USACAPOC is only 5% of the total USAR force but conducts 20% of deployments. Even in peacetime, you can bet on deployments with your team...or volunteer to deploy with another team.

If you go Officer and not clinical good luck. You will be instructed very early to do a lot of tasks and it doesn’t matter if you are TPU or full time. You are still expected to make calls/deadlines and god be dam if you have a full time job. Just be prepared. You are better off going active duty unless you are in a non deployable unit.

It depends on your Army Reserve unit. I didn't like my first two units in the Army Reserve , but I do like my second. People have to understand that active duty has more discipline than the reserve components. There is no UCMJ in the reserves unless you are on active duty orders. Even then, they have to bring you on active duty orders while you are doing your UCMJ punishment. There are people in the reserves who make way more money in their civilian job. So, it is what it is in the reserve component.

Would you mind shedding some light on your experience, specifically as an officer in the reserves? Thi buggest misunderstanding is that "Active Duty" is different than "Active Duty For Training". If you are/were in the Reserves you are not qualified for any VA benefits if you don't have "Active Duty" time. I missed a deployment rotation and only did Active Duty Training for my time in service. I am entitled to zero VA benefits. I don't even have a DD214 because you only get a Separation with your discharge on it unless you have Active Duty time.

Wayne IN that I was with draws people from 7 states. I don’t really mind the travel as I get the hotel paid for and you get reimbursed up to $500 for travel expenses for drill weekends. I’m an ammo warrant officer in the reserves so since I did this I will have to travel to units as I rank up. Great video. I get so tired of active duty folks who don't understand the Army Reserve making snide comments. I remind them that we get a blue, now white ID card, entitled to benefits and get retired pay if we get 20 good years. They are also surprised that we get VA benefits if we qualify and that we get Tricare for Life once we reach the age. Maybe active duty is not intended for everybody just like the Army Reserves is not intended for everybody. I find that most folks in the Army Reserves have a job that pays them enough and being in the Army Reserves is a good way to supplement their income and add another avenue of revenue for retirement if they get 20 good years. I worked with enough active duty soldiers and they had a struggle going out to get a job after retirment depending on what career field they had experience in and education. If they wanted to work civil service it was easier to get a job on a contract or civil service after the required waiting time and with their VA preference. They still wind up working another 10 years or more to qualify for another retirement. I find it easier to have built my civil service career and Army Reserves career at the same time then retire 2 years apart and be done. Really good video that explained everything and it will help those looking at joining the Army Reserves.

You forgot to mention the important top 6....... 1. You don't have to pass a fitness test after basic training. There's no reprocussions for failing 2. You don't have to show up for drill weekend every month. There's no AWOL for drill weekend 3. You can get a DUI as long as you're not on orders during your "2 week" training. 4. If you fail a drug test, they'll call you out on it about 1.5 years later 5. If the Army tells you that you're deploying, you can just refuse to sign the counseling 6. You can basically do whatever you want and get away with it because you're not Active duty and on title 10 status.

Strongly consider going to a reserve or guard unit. I had an adjustment when I got to the more relaxed reserve environment. But now I've retired and am drawing that retirement check. All my old guy friends wish they had that $ each month. Know what it takes to advance and let that be your motivator. It goes by fast.

Here is a pro tip. So keep in mind that once you get out of Active you will be placed in the IRR for the reminder of your initial 8 year obligation. So instead of going straight from active to Reserve, ETS go into the IRR than contact a Career Counselor like myself (not a recruiter) and we can place you in a Reserve unit and not only will you not be rushed because you already out processed, but there are often bonuses for coming into the Reserve from the IRR.

Does anyone know if you get paid during Basic if you are joining the reserves? My recruiter told me I won't get paid until I'm completely done with training (basic and AIT) and I am freaking out. lol - My MOS is 1 year long so I won't get paid for over a year?? How do they expect anyone to pay bills?
@richie9878
@richie9878 3 жыл бұрын
You definitely get paid just like active duty during Basic and AIT if you are in the Reserves. Your recruiter is probably in Active Duty and has never been in the Reserves before. Or they are trying to convince you to go active instead of Reserves.
