My father actually had to request, be approved to attend, and complete an entirely different MOS school as an E-6 because his position (Senior Medic) was changed from an E-7 slot to an E-6 slot. In order to be promoted from E-6 to E-7, he actually had to change MOS, so he went to school to be a Forward Observer. Of course, it helped that he was a Marine Infantryman before he was an Army Medic & O.R. Tech.

I’m not so sure, depending on the goal of your career. Officers have outstanding leadership abilities sure, and? As far as I’ve been able to discern, commissioned officers specifically are not very technically inclined usually. Is that true for your case as well, or are you knowledgeable in any specific skillset other than leadership? As for me, I’m looking to make a beeline for WOCS as soon as I enlist after completing my 4 year degree, because I’m after a skillset above all else.

Zeph Belk how was your experience at basic training and how is AIT school?
@ArachnidGamingTTV5 жыл бұрын
If you're thinking about joining. Just know that reception Is a week and basic is 9 weeks and 4 days. Reception was the absolute worst in my opinion compared to actual basic training. If you dont mind getting yelled at and being told what to do and when to do it and are able to hold your tongue then basic will be a breeze for you. But just because you can do the right thing dosent mean others can, police your battle buddies and get a system going and hold meetings with your platoon in order to improve. Teamwork is the DreamWorks in basic. If you work well with others basic is only going to be as hard as you make it. I'm currently in AIT ft. Lee atm, it's like college here. They still have drill Sgt buuuut....they are way more relaxed and some I can talk to like a friend but that's situational. Trust me the grass is greener on the other side. If you haven't picked your mos yet pick one that'll benefit you outside the military because once you go to AIT you gain college credits towards any college you apply to after you get to your duty station!!! So choose wisely. Oh and the scariest thing for me was that I was afraid to fail, here's a friendly tip....everything in the army is an open note test including basic and ait. So keep that in mind while you join.

Someone who comes in as e3 won't make e4 any faster than someone who came in basic with them as an e1 (though I did get promoted before several people I knew from basic whom I've kept in contact with), and when that e3 gets to their unit, the e2's there will make e4 before they do because they've been in longer. This is an out of date look, around 92....I have been in since 94 (with a six year break in service) but the promotion system has drastically changed since the 90s. Now the NCOER plays a huge role in promotions and deployments are given more weight mainly because the Guard and Reserve have played a larger role in the fight with deployments. College degrees are still significant but don't necessarily get you ahead. There was a lot more of the buddy system 90s which could hold up a good Soldier. Not nearly as much now with the current system.

80% C fund, 10% S fund, 10% I fund. You can custom tailor between those 3 funds or go 100% C fund if you want, but I wouldn't go below 70% on C fund. The C fund is essentially an S&P 500 index fund. The S&P 500 index fund is the top 500 US companies spread throughout the whole fund with a heavy portion of it on the top growth stocks like Amazon, Google, Apple, etc. Just park the money into there. Also make it a Roth contribution. Roth contributions are after tax versus traditional which is before taxes. Just means with a Roth you have already been taxed on that money. With traditional that money isn't taxed until you pull it out and it will be taxed at the income rate of that year in your retirement. You don't know if we will be seeing 50% income tax rates in the next 30+ years so better to just make it a Roth contribution and know when you pull 500 dollars out of the account in retirement that it is going to be straight 500 bucks tax free. Also, if you can contribute something like 200 bucks a month for the next 40 years into an S&P500 index fund it should result in having well over a million dollars in retirement.

@Kalashnikov4133 жыл бұрын
NCOs (like the name suggest) are officers that was not commisioned, by this i mean they're officially not a part of Officer, but they can act as one, it's just that their responsibility in leadership is still not that big. NCOs command and lead Fireteam, Squad, and Section group

You can make E-6, staff Sergeant by doing the following showing up on time in the right uniform in the right place and having an excellent PT score. E7 through E9 is purely political.

I'm curios. Why does a 2nd Lt. fresh out of OCS get to order a Sgt. with years of combat experience? And why does the 2nd Lt get paid more? (Sorry I know it's probably a dumb question but I'm literally curios about it)
@mistahsusan26505 ай бұрын
it's possible to make it to e5 just two years. you have to have a degree before you can be comissioned as an officer. at least 2/3rds of the army are support/logistics troops, so there's a good chance that the sargeant may have years of practical experience, but it might not be in frontline combat.

A quick question, does the Army "fast track" promising recruits? I did two years of community college before enlisting in the Marine Corps for the GI Bill. Because of that I was a "contract" PFC (E-2). Being a little older and a little more mature, recruit training was a bit "easier". I graduated #3. At ITS I graduated #2. After that I was sent to the "right" schools and got the "right" TAD assignments. I was meritoriously promoted to Corporal (E-4) a year after recruit training. I was meritoriously promoted to Sergeant (E-5) a year later. A Sgt in two years after recruit training. Does the Army do anything like that?

@Brian Noland thank you. I kinda figured the Army might have something similar.

This may be a random question..but... how long can someone stay within one rank - E5 for example with 11b?
@macburger50265 жыл бұрын
Merisa Rae I don't know but I think in today's Army (supposedly years ago someone could stay an e5 for 20 years and actually retire there), at some point after a few more years they would make you try to rank up to e6 and try to push you to do Advance Leadership Course and e6 board. In the Army you could be an e6 after like six to eight years.

Depends on your mos, theres a limit though and if you refuse to go to further leadership courses or the board you’ll get get discharged from the army

I have a question I cant find online. Not all MOSs come with a bonus right?
@macburger50265 жыл бұрын
Tommy Riddell Correct, not all MOS's come with a bonus. Keep in mind that if you see a MOS with a bonus, that's really because they want more people in the MOS. But there are definitely some MOS's that they have bonuses for, like in the 92 Series, such as 92G (cook), that they want more people in.....because so many people who are in get out of that MOS (if not the Army itself) at the first chance they get.... because that MOS (especially something like 92G cook) sucks. I know. I also want to warn you that some MOS's with bonuses, offer even higher bonuses if you sign a longer contract. I would strongly advise you to not fall for it. If you get offered a few more thousand dollars for a 5 year or 6 year contract, and you sign up for that.....not only is that the longer you're going to have to stay in the Army (the military as it is has a lot of things that suck, but the Army has a whole lot more bullshit that makes it suck more than the Air Force), that's also the longer you'll have to stay in that MOS. A recruiter might tell you that you won't have to stay in that MOS for your entire contract, that supposedly you'll only have to do 2 years and then put in a 4187, but more likely than not, you'll be stuck in that MOS until you are a year away from your reenlistment window (a 5 year contract means you'll have to do that MOS for at least 4 years, for example). So I'd strongly advise you to sign the shortest contract possible (3 years), and ignore whatever higher bonus they'll offer for signing up for more years. If what I told you sounds like a lot, I'm just trying to be as up front as possible before you just jump and make the same mistakes other people before you have made.

i'm trying to find out who are the people that do the promoting in the co ranks? like is it a commitee of 4 star generals doing it? what made me think this is if someone was a 3 star general and was gonna become a 4 star, who would promote him? other 4 star generals? because why would any other lower rank promote ppl to high ranks than themselves? I feel promoting within the nco is easier cos i would think the co ranks will do that, my guess is maybe a commitee of trusted minds within the military does the promoting in the co ranks, or do the ranks above them promote?
