I was a Marine infantry platoon commander in the '70s. My guys thought they were tough until we spent a day with Recon. They showed us that we couldn't keep up and that we weren't as tough as we thought we were. Each branch has their elite and then their regular guys who are just a reflection of society at large. Marines have Recon and now Raiders, Navy has Seals, Army has Rangers and Green Berets, Air Force has their Parajumpers, Coast Guard has Rescue Swimmers. All these have endured physical and mental stress that would break most people. So all this talk about which branch is toughest is just a bunch of baloney.
@alexanderwinters5531
@alexanderwinters5531 2 жыл бұрын
Yep. It generally depends more on MOS, unit type and individual than it does on branch, though I do appreciate the USMC's efforts to instill an infantry-ish ethic in its non-infantry MOS. People often seem averse to nuanced, or even worse, dichotomous, reality; most people seem to prefer simple, binary illusions. -- a former US Army parachute infantry light weapons sergeant...who jumped a 110-lbs. ruck into the pitch-black and then humped it 20 or 30 miles over mountains and through swamps on a regular basis

@@1619-k8n If that's true, then the standards in the other branches must be pretty low. In the '70s the Marine Corps was pretty bad; low morale, widespread drug use, and constant UA. Just about every week we would bring the dogs through the barracks or even to formation before we went out in the field, and we would catch guys with weed. I spent more time dealing with disciplinary issues than I did training my Marines for combat. It was horrible. Part of the reason for that I believe is that the court system was giving offenders the option of enlisting in the Corps or going to jail. In our drug and anti-authoritarian state we couldn't have beaten a den of cub scouts in a war. Just to correct your assertation, both my Dad and my oldest brother were in the Army and my next oldest brother was in the Air Force. None of them could match my description of the problems we had. Even as a Navy midshipman aboard a destroyer in 1972, I didn't notice the bad attitude in the Navy that I experienced later in my battalion. I don't mean to dis the Marines, but I think for the most part they are full of themselves with their cocky attitude. Getting yelled at louder than the other services in boot camp does not make you a better warrior.

I don’t think it’s a matter of being soft or not, I think the army is just doing what they can to make sure they keep up the numbers. Joining the military isn’t something a lot of young people are into nowadays, so the army just wants to make sure those that actually do want to join will get in...no matter if they should be able to join or not lol, but I’ve met plenty of folks who shouldn’t be in the military who are, so it is what it is I guess. I spent 8 years in the Marines. It is a small organization. Promotion is harder. The average retirement rank is E-7 for Enlisted and O-4 for Officers (if you are exceptional) The army is E-8 and O-5. That is what you need to look at if you pla guysn to stay 20 years. In the end, the health benefits of 20 years is what's important. Think it through

If you want to deploy more frequently, spend a lot of time in the field, shoot your rifle all the time, and basically live out that title of Soldier or Marine, I would suggest an Army Airborne Infantry contract, or a Marine Infantry contract. If you want to do "hardcore" stuff and you have the correct mindset, personality, determination, Intelligence, physical fitness level, and you are comfortable in the water then I would suggest getting a contract for a Special operations or a Special operations capable unit (Ranger,18-X,PJ,SOWT, SWCC,SEAL,Recon, etc). Outside of that the Marine Corps has higher standards, and the Army has better funding. I will say this, if you join the Marines and want to change your branch of service after 1 enlistment you can keep your rank and skip basic training, if you want to join the Marines after another branch of service you will start all over again. All of the branches have their pros and cons, if you are thinking about joining and stumble across this comment do some serious research.

Been in the Army 15 year can tell you been in too. I would add that the Army has a huge variety of jobs some of which might as well be another branch all together when you compare what your lifestyle will be like. For example right now I'm an AGR 79V its basically a 9 to 5 Civilian desk job. If I compare that to when I first joined attached to an artillery unit it like night and day.

When you hit your line unit, especially combat arms, the tempo of training and the overall mindset will be high tempo regardless of what the temp rules on the ACFT and shark attack are. I would focus on the end game when your training is done and you start to apply what you have learned in that environment and what you need to learn from your squad / platoon leaders /NCO’s. Lemme tell you how basic training is nowadays. I graduated from Infantry OSUT back in July, and from my experience and talking with a bunch of other guys in different companies it really depends on your company and drill sgt’s. You are trained to the army’s standard which isn’t very hard, but your also trained to your drill sgt’s standard. If you have 3 drill sgt’s all from places like 82nd, 101st, and 10th mountain you best believe your gonna earn that blue cord. All these old army heads keep saying “oh it’s all sunshine and rainbow, you guys got it easy” except OSUT for infantry is much longer now which just leaves time for more smoking and it’s more focused on tactics now which a lot of these old army guys couldn’t comprehend with a GT score of a highschool freshman.

Well, I graduated OSUT at Benning over 20 years ago...and my ASVAB was 99, so...I get it. I tell everyone that being infantry is, was and always will be hard. That said, OSUT of any duration is like a vacation compared to life in a light or parachute infantry company. Though you might well understand that now. =] Hang in there, little brother. I hope this is not a negative comment Matt, but the people who claim that any branch is soft are so ignorant. Most of the folks who come in to service are young and immature at times, and the transformation they go through to become soldiers should never be laughed at. For example, I joined the army at age 19, and before that I never did anything athletic because I was just a book person. I had to work out and get ready three months before BCT and still I was far from perfect. The point from the PT test is not to point blank fail you but see you improve slowly. When I got out of BCT I was able to score 289 and still improving a year and half later. THE POINT is that not all people are the same and Army along other branches do their thing depending on demanding the type of work you do and that is not to say that we are soft. In fact, I have seen people from the coast guard who are more physically fit and mentally ready than those from the Army or the Marines. Now, there is no argument that the Marines are more strict because they are usual the first ones out in a battle, however, this is not say that the other branches are slower or less qualified.

Army brother Matt, I have not heard before today that the Army was considering getting rid of their PFT test in basic training. I would not be in support of this because the military involves being physically fit, to some degree. Not everyone in the Marines ran three miles in 18 minutes; i know I didn't. My basic training time was 19:30. Anyways, after I left the Marines, four years as an Infantryman, i joined the Army reserves. I will admit to this, the Army offers more opportunities than the Marines. Sure, many Marines may get agitated or upset at knowing this, so what, get over it! I strongly believe the main focus of any potential enlistee is, getting the maximum benefits out of the service branch they are interested in joining. Many who join the Marines will speak about the Army in not the most welcoming manner. But how many have actually served in the Army???.Many compare the different basic training. Guess what basic training is only a small part of one's enlistment experience. Being a former infantryman, it was a continuum of what it really meant to be a grunt, four years. What I learned about the Marines and the Army is if someone is joining for the boot camp experience or the uniform, they need to check their opportunity GPS. If I could have done anything different after I got out of active duty, I would have looked into all the career opportunities in the Army. I probably would have stayed in and made it a career. Some of my Marine friends who joined the Army were doing a lot better due to the opportunities that the Army offered them. I think the Sgt. Major of the Army is trying to restructure the Army in the right direction. I hope he will be successful. In the end, it is really about maximizing opportunities. We had many Marines who were Sergeants and if they didn't make Staff Sergeant by 12 years they would get a 2 years waiver; if they didn't make it by then, they were kicked out. That was during my time. Today, I have seen Staff Sergeants with less than 7 years in. To get a Corporal rank, was super hard. Most got out as E-3s, Lance Corporals. I did three deployments, and completed the squad leadership and jungle training courses and didn't get Corporal, literally, until one month before I got out. There was no incentive to re-up. Today, it is way easier.

I just graduated basic training less than a month ago and I went to fort leonard wood which is ranked one of the hardest training centers and we actually had somewhat of a shark attack. Now the P.T. test we did have to pass.

So I'm in the DEP for the Marine Corps, and I only qualified for jobs in the combat support field and another field that I didn't like or caught my interest. Initially, upon joining the DEP, I was planning to get an infantry rifleman contract (0311), but I fell 3 points short for my GT. Instead, I asked if I could do another job that was in the infantry field, but they said no. My whole life, I grew up having the dream of becoming a United States Marine and also getting rifleman because I knew I would be great at it, and now I can't have it and I might have to stop pursuing the Marine Corps. When my recruiter said that I couldn't get riflmen, I felt down, like my dream had been taking away from me, but I didn't argue that much with him. I ended up picking AAV (1833) because that was the only solid option. Though, I know I'm wasn't guaranteed that job due to me scoring low on the ASVAB, and I felt like my mos would later on change in boot camp to another lower score mos like a desk job which was what scared me the most because I wanted an active job like infantry. I've read online that your mos can change in boot camp, and I didn't want to take that chance, so what did I do? I went to an Army recruiter, and I was 100 percent guaranteed infantryman (11b). The first step to transferring to the Army was to get a discharge from the Marine Corps. Of course, it's my recruiters job to keep me in. He asked me why, and I said because "I wanted infantry." He went on to say,"If you want a branch that will push you to your limits and motivate you to do better, then the Marine Corps is for you, otherwise join the Army because it requires lower standards and a lack of discipline." He also said,"If you join the Marine Corps and ever want to switch to another branch, you won't have to do basic training again, and your rank will remain the same. In the end, he told me to really think about it and to get back to him when my mind was made up. So, where does that leave me? In the middle because I really want to be a Marine because it's been my dream but I also don't want a job that I may not like. On the other hand, I want the Army because I'm guaranteed the job I want and I know I will love it. My overall goal in the military is to be the best of the best, which would mean doing special forces, and I plan on doing more than 20 years, depending if l like the military. I don't know what to do guys. Please help me. I'm 18, btw

I'm in the same situation. Almost went to the USMC but heard army SF gets after it more and sees more deployments/ combat than the Corps. I am apprehensive tho because I hear the army is soft (e.g Emma's story ad). But I wouldn't want to be in the marines and never deploy/ see action since it's peacetime. Nobody is being straight with me, the army or marine recruiter, and can't find info online. Yes someone please give us insight lol, can't decide rn

I’m currently in the DEP, but I’m now starting to think I should join the army before it’s too late. Really the only thing the marines have to offer are the sexy uniforms and the pride of being a marine, but you’re also sacrificing a lot of things the army has to offer such as, air assault, pathfinder school, airborne school, ranger school, and special forces etc. The Marines really don’t have much to offer as much as the army, and they aren’t funded like the army, which means worse equipment and just an overall run down lifestyle. I still love the marines and what they stand for but if you’re looking for a better experience in the United States military I believe the army is the better choice.

These posts made me laugh. I get it. Your young and don’t know. If you are talking about a career (20+yrs), consider MOS that promotes and doesn’t bottle neck between 6 & 12 years in the staff ranks. Want to get paid more??? Well you have to get promoted. Choose the right branch of service for the right reasons and ask the recruiter or some who’s in or recently got out about the promotion and retention rates. FYI there’s a lot on the internet as well nowadays. If you want to be a Marine, join the Corps. Choose an MOS, even something with wheels (AAVs), that’s an added bonus. You still have to go through SOI. Not MCT, completely different If not join the Army, they will be glad to have ya. Join the Corps, take the combat MOS. At the end of the day you are a war fighter. Everyone believes they are going to be a special something!!! Most are dreamers and wouldn’t make it! If you are a bad ass, guess what? There are ways to prove it and lateral move to those special groups. All the best MSgt USMC
