My first PT test scores: 4 PU, 35 SU, 23:48 RUN. My second PT test scores: 23 PU, 52 SU, 17:48 RUN. My third (final) PT test scores: 28 PU, 68 SU, 16:03 RUN. (Female, 23). Take every smoke session as an opportunity to better yourself for your PT test no matter how exhausted you are. They will help your PT test! If you're put into delta or charlie run groups within your company, try to run in the front of the formation so you're not stuck behind everyone else who lacks motivation to push themselves. Lead the formation. Volunteer for road guards (more opportunities to run throughout the day). Do PU/SU drills in your barracks every night. Rotate them MWF, TR.

Now I can do 5km in 37 minutes (jogging) but after 12 minutes, I have to stop or walk fast to catch my breath, spitting and needing a little sip water... I also suspect smoking (17 years of smoking must have messed my lungs).

Running is about pushing through pain. If you can't just think positively while running, at least remind yourself that it's not going to even hurt later. As long as you stretch properly, that should be the case. (unless you get charlie horses in BCT like me)

The only PT test that matters is the last one. You'll have enough time to meet the minimum standards. They'll probably scare you and tell you that you won't make it everyday, multiple times a day. You will make it just focus on yourself.

You nailed it, Matt, as always. The Army returns drill sergeants to AIT. It stands to reason that a few making the transition from basic might have difficulty keeping up to standards. I admit that during my ten months in the DEP, my physical preparation was poor. Lord knows that I paid for it. The moral: 100 push-ups a day, before basic, keeps the drill sergeants off of your ass.

I learned this truth the hard way. Function is everything. All shall be fully tried physically, mentally, and emotionally, sometimes at the SAME TIME. My first PT test, I only passed the sit-ups. Proceeded to catch all kinds of hell. It affected me negatively in no small way. Even the few things that I did right did not matter. A touch of advice from an old goat: prior to ship out, make every effort, above and beyond, to beat the absolute hell out of the pt test requirements. Do that, and it will be one less thing to worry about. You will still be expected to improve, but you will be working upward and confidence goes a long way.

@andrewolivo7028

Robert Conover no idea on how the marine standards work. But from my experience with both the APFT and the ACFT, the ACFT expects you to carry more than just body weight. I highly recommend hitting the iron to build more muscle mass and focus a lot on explosive energy!

From the start the DS told us that we wouldn't pass without a min score of 180 with a min of 60 in each event. But in the end, anyone with scores above 50 did graduate with a wavier from the commander. Good luck trainees

Graduated yesterday and am on my bus heading to AIT. The people who were sent to fatcamp were the people who failed like 3 or 4 retests of the eoc apft with 35 points. Aka 35-35-40. and the people who were separated were the ones who failed all retests. Recycles in the whole cycle were people who did not show any improvement at all. At least in my company the fat camp was not mentioned till the end of the cycle, and being sent home was either failing a lot of times the retests or conduct wise. The first test they did when I got there was a 2-2-2, not 1-1-1

Just got back from ait recently and what Matt is saying is true. I went to BCT (fort jackson) able to pass the run and sit ups unlike couple of my peers who couldn't do all 3... For me, I just had to knock out around 50 push ups every night before bed and I started passing my PT test around white phase (failed red phase pt test by 1 push up). Keep in mind you can't really improve your run in the barracks and doing sit ups without someone holding you feet in the barracks suck. With that being said, if you end up going to Fort Lee (quartermaster side at least) for AIT your PT score will skyrocket like crazy. I went from 232 in basic to 273 first PT test in AIT.

Just enlisted 25N and I I'm going to basic in May 28th at Fort Benning. My weakest part is running, I didn't ran in years. I started running since January and literally I did 2 miles in like 25 minutes. Now I'm between 16:30-17:30min. A lot better but still need to improve, thanks for your videos Matt, it has helped me in my decision

Matt, good job! If you are in any way serious about going in, get in shape, go to exceed the standers set by the Army, it will help you in the long run. If you go into the airborne you must be in top shape! The black hats (jump masters) will not give you any breaks at your PT test, many guys where let go for not doing an event perfectly, proper position ect. That first PT test do your best to max it. Matt knows what he is talking about, I'm to far removed from the Army to pass along any do's or do not's, just do your best and train hard, that will save you in combat!

If you have a recruiter who is on his game, they will be keeping tabs on your fitness level and weight standards. Some folk slack of and think they will just lion it out and will through it, and then are faced with a possible early separation and caused a waste of time and tax payer dollars. Ultimately, it is the recruits responsibility to be fit and know the basics, like 10 General orders and ranking system.

I wanted to prepare for basic and do tons of running as many people told me to do... Then you have roommates who (at the time) believe that prep does not need to happen and you can magically get instant in shape while holding a 9-5 job. I passed my PT test at the end of basic (had drill sergeants who were nitpicky about how I did push ups) and in AIT now. For those who want to join, get prepared. Lose weight and get the endurance up to a point where you can get a 300 on your PT test.

Unfortunately, I just got medically separated from the Army during basic. However, in my experience (Fort Leonard Wood, Delta 2-48), people lacking in PT weren't sent home, but got to go all the way through basic and if they failed the 3rd, or the "3.5" PT test then they were sent into the Fitness Training Unit ("Fat camp"). You just stayed there, did weekly PT tests until you passed then moved on in your training.
