"Use your platform." In a very in depth interview with Lauren O'Neil, Matty Healy expresses how artists today should use their platform to talk about issues that matter. He also opens up about his drug addiction and how he is coping now.

Absolutely....and that's part of why it was so great. So honest. The whole extended conversation about drugs was really interesting. It seems he was incredibly honest about it here...the struggle with addiction...and all the boring cliches that come with that. But also about how he _genuinely_ loves drugs. I mean...you'd have to be pretty sheltered, naive, or intellectually incurious to NOT find drugs, at a bare minimum, interesting. And so often these days, the de facto response to drugs is sanctimonious and tedious. Matty is WAY more honest about all of it. The bad...and good, of all of it. And nothing about "DRUGS" is black and white. It's damn near entirely gray. And Matty knows that....but also knows how tenuous it is to talk about it. But he does so anyway...at least in this interview. And I really respect that. And appreciate it personally. Everything he said makes perfect sense to me.

As someone around Matty's age....who's also dealt with drug issues in my life....I hugely appreciate how open and HONEST he is about his own life. I especially love that he's not one of those ridiculous people who confidently assert that drugs are objectively bad. Actually, drugs are....amazing. They're basically the best thing that exists in reality. THAT is why people get hooked. People get addicted....because of how GREAT drugs are, not because of how awful they are. The awful part is running out...or withdrawing...or getting caught...and all the shit that comes with that.

@@yourstruly1232 The addiction is. Or rather...the withdrawal is. The actual experience? Assuming you have an unlimited supply that's 100% pure? I can't think of many things in life better than that scenario. But.... withdrawal is so SO excruciating, that the constant fear of knowing that reckoning will eventually come...makes it very hard to enjoy the good parts for too long. I still shudder when I remember the aching gnawing excruciating discomfort in my limbs and stomach. Being more tired than you've ever been in your life...but getting utterly incapable of falling asleep. Yeah...it's a blast lol... 😔

@Malte Laurids Brigge if we were throwing our cars into the fucking ocean, then yeah I'd rather them decompose than continue to poison our planet. The idea is that since the CD's are by no means inherently necessary to the enjoyment of the music, what with streaming/virtual storage being easily accessible, what's the point in a product that lasts longer than it needs to. Now, that being said, that's only for the purpose of recording physical sales, so I understand why it seems convoluted to not just bypass a physical medium altogether, I think you're being obtuse so as to miss the point of creating less harmful versions of the products we are continuing to produce even as they often get simply discarded and pollute our planet for years.

This interview just hit me. Matty is so sincere, so real, so down to earth and so open about everything. The part about his drug addiction I just was sitting and listening and feeling him, his pain, God knows only what hell he’s been through and I am so happy for him that he could fight his demons, at least the most dangerous and hard ones. I wish him nothing but all the best in this life. He is special. He is fragile like an expensive porcelain cup, he needs more good people around him who will always support him and protect him. 💜

This is one of my favorite Matty interviews.....and I come back to it often. He's very smart....very aware...and very existential in how he thinks. He's ALSO very charming and charismatic and outgoing and down for a laugh. But not here. In this....he's hungover, or high, or tired, or all three. And he's just kinda....talking. And I love it. Because I've so been there. Hell, I'm kinda there tonight, right now. Tomorrow I'll be all bright eyed and bushy tailed....ready for the day. But right now? I'm a bit.....mired in my own mind. And I really appreciate Matty for being so honest about wherever he's at....at any given moment. He doesn't BS....he just is who he is at that time. There's plenty of interviews where he's got the charisma and charm turned up to 11. He knows how to do that. But this interview....is not that. And I love it for that reason. It's honest.

The way I’ve always seen artists who go through drug use while making albums, and then they become fully sober for other albums, it’s a journey. Music is all about the journey, and to be able to see the evolution of an artist that comes out of an addiction, and how it affects the music, it’s baffling.

They have grown out to be a huge band and there will be some people like Matt who won't like their music or won't find any deeper messages in it. “He probably did that because of you” that’s a profound lack of understanding of what Dan Reynolds is doing. While I’m not such a huge fan of his music, I contribute to his streams because the annual LGBT fundraiser and music festival that Dan Reynolds has organized in Utah over the past 3 years. I listen to Imagine Dragons because Dan Reynolds has become one of the biggest LGBT allies in the western United States, donates constantly to our causes and speaks out *against his own church and family* about the fact that people like me deserve fair treatment and equality. Its massive what he’s done as far as helping us LGBT people trapped in strict religious cultures that keep us silenced. Marty Healy is cool and all, but literally none of the contributions Dan Reynolds has given has had even an iota of cause from him or his opinions.

Trevor Scott okkkkkk but can I just say that Matty (not Marty lol) never took credit for that...? The interviewer said that and he just went along with it to be nice or polite

I never said he did, just that it was an obvious lack of understanding.

I feel like Matty just wanna throw shade at another band... don't wanna be rude but i don't think the 1975 has ever or will ever be as "mainstream" as Imagine Dragons. The 1975 is more of a "cultfandom", where there's a certain group of people who is very intense about the band. Maybe Imagine Dragons has more bland, same sounding songs but let's be real, i went to one of their show two days ago and 100,000 persons showed up... could the same really happened for The 1975?? They're mostly known in the UK & USA, their music isn't for everybody, but in both cases, i love them. Matty should take his own advice and take his platform to spread great messages, like positivity and just shut up if you have nothing great or helpful to say

Trevor Scott hmmm when did i say that but alright. I don't think popularity means quality, some people are famous for very ridiculous reasons but you know, everybody once will or had their 10 seconds of fame :')

I know someone who became a heroin addict but he never stole for it never hurt anyone but himself and cared for his grandma until she died...I think he used it to deal with the fact that she was ill but he did lie to people nothing serious just about why he had to go or why he couldnt go to something and he told me it was because he had to use to feel normal and he would lie to b able to go use and then go home and care for his grandma...last I heard she had died he went back to work and stopped but he still uses in his off time but works away for weeks without it so I guess some people can use heroin and still function I guess it's like people that can drink without getting pissed sort of if u get my drift.

Dan does a lot for his community. Go watch his documentary and you will see. A simple lyric can mean a lot based off of the emotion it creates. Not every song has to be a protest. You gonna hate on the Beatles for making simple music too? “Come together” - very simple yet effective. But also - they asked this guy a question in the middle of a set. He is giving it all - in a vulnerable state. Won’t be surprised if these guys collaborate down the road.

I fail to see how your popularity = responsibility to do good. I get its his opinion, and I don't care for Imagine Dragons very much, but the artist should only speak of things that speak to them. Even if they don't produce anything super creative, that doesn't mean they aren't artists. Perhaps Imagine Dragons don't care about influencing others and I agree it would be a shame if they choose not to do something good in the world with their name, but it's not like its the artist's duty to do that to begin with.

Imagine Dragons is actually using their platform to raise mental health awareness, anti-racism and support lgbtqia. They're doing these amazing projects like TRL, Love Loud and more!
