So I really think most of the songs are about Matty. She references the Jehovah’s Witness suits, his suit and tie, Mr steal your girl and make her cry, love bombing, being ghosted, his typewriter (there’s an interview where he talks about his love for typewriters), the pills, band’s that he loves, kicking out stage lights, kissing random girls. Rustling my sparkling summer aka the summer of the era tour. Rekindling an old flame, when they were kids. Lucy from BoyGenius and Jack reference. So many links in the lyrics to Matty. From what I understand they’ve had an on and off again situationship. Like they’d hook up flirt whatever between exes they dated. Who knows if it’s true but just what people have speculated. I’m still not recovered from the whiplash of thinking this was going to be a breakup album from Joe!!

Yes!!! After hearing it all several times the connections troughout the songs are pretty clear, all pointing to Matty Healy. She was so affected by him, omg. I think no one expected this from this album. Everyone was set on Joe and then the lyrics were so confusing to everyone.

I think Matty has been a *possibility* since 2014 that never managed to materialize. Like, they maybe got close to something developing past a fleeting fling, but for one reason or another, it didn’t happen. When that happens, a person can turn that “what if” into a fantasy that reality will never live up to. She built the idea of a relationship up to something it could never actually be. I think the reason there is so much about Matty is she been sitting on all of this for a decade and the let down of the reality was harsher than she could’ve imagined. We all know where she goes to work out her feelings…songwriting.

@@LaurenLipman thank you for saying so. It’s just a theory but the poem she wrote inside the physical album points to her facing the insanity that was the Matty relationship. The songs she wrote about him show that she understands now how delusional she was to think he would be-or could be-anything more than what he is (which is a messy sh*t-stirrer and addict). But I truly think she NEEDED to see it for herself in order to answer the “what if” of it all so she could lay it to rest (post-mortem?) and finally be free to close this chapter of her past and have the future she so longs for and deserves.

sounds to me like she and joe just fizzled out. she doesn't sound heartbroken that they're done, just sad. but MATTY. that's the revelation on this album. seems like he was never far from her mind and the heartbreak here is over him. he turned out to be lethal for her, just like everyone said he would be but she did what all of us do when we fixate on a bad guy. we can 'fix' him. he needs ME and if he has that, he'll come around. she loves her flawed muses. i actually think now a lot of songs we assumed were about other people were actually about him.

I mean you're losing me was written in 2021 and they were clearly having problems long before that. With matty it was abrupt. he just ghosted her and she couldn't get closure. So imagine her having all these expectations and choosing to stick by him even if it cost her fans and her career just for him to just up and leave and date someone few weeks after

I think what we've learned is Joe was with her for a long time. She was wanting marriage and kids. She was almost begging for it. And Joe wouldn't give it to her. So when Matty came back into her life he promised her he could give her those things she wanted. She believed it but then he talked shit about her behind her back and flat out ghosted her. Completely. Listening to her sing some of the new songs I just wanted to give her hug. Her heartbreak you can hear in her voice. My heart was breaking for her. I'm so so SO glad she has Travis now who is so sweet with her and she is so happy you can see it in every video you can hear her smiling when she sings about him.

Don't just assume it's all about matty. In fact, most songs mentioning him also mentions joe, portraying matty as a mistake she made on a whim after the pain of joe, and how she realized that the fling was a disaster so ended it and finally really dealt with Joe's breakup head to head. That's basically what the album is really about, from song to song pieced together, not a real breakup album about the boys in particular, but more about herself dealing with the chaos brought about by the bad relationships along with her rising fame❤

I'm almost 61. I can tell you, she's bigger than the Beatles and Elvis. Same fan frenzy for sure , with people fainting and going wild, but at the time, the older folks were aghast at the Beatles and Elvis (clutching their pearls for sure) so it was mostly young people into them, rabidly so, however, Taylor has millions of OLDER fans too, like me, and doesn't seem to have a demographic - everyone loves her. And obvs. now we have social media and streaming which just makes it exponentially bigger than anyone who ever came before.

I 1,000% agree with you. I didn’t think this album would have so much Matty Healy in it until I started reading the blurbs on genius. I didn’t finish filming my reaction to part 1 until 3:45am and I started at 12am lmao. Mainly cause I paused after each verse for copyright and read all the lyrics from genius and their notes on the song. So I still have a lot of editing to do. I didn’t find out about part 2 until after filming and there was no way I was going to film another video. So I was like I listen to a little bit of it while I’m trying to fall asleep and I think I lasted 4 songs and then I passed out mainly cause I was tired but also part 2 is so mesmerizing in the production and I don’t think I absorbed any of the lyrics so when I react to it tonight after I react to the Fortnight music video at 8 hehe. I believe the typewriter is Matty's-- Taylor says he left it in "my apartment." I think if it were about Joe she would have called it "our apartment", since he lived there for so long? Also, the ring thing is totally Matty- she BEGGED forJoe to marry her- in Paper Rings and in Lover, if he had done that ring thing they would have married. I think he just didn't want to marry- maybe not ever and maybe just not her.

You're thinking too highly of joe. He's not as great as that, hiding well as shown in her earlier songs we thought were about others but now clearly about him. She would say my instead of our, since he only stayed there temporarily during covid and his part in a hulu show and she was the one who bought it and had stayed there way before she even knew him. Also, she already showed signs of insecurity and cracks in this joe relationship during folklore and Evermore, so by that time she already at least had gotten over the marriage era and either over him or just want to make it work better before really going that far. There is a video in which Taylor talks about Lavender Haze. However, she has deleted the video from her feed (probably in connection with the breakup). You can watch the short on KZbin. In it she talks about her 6 year relationship and how the song is about that... also in the music video there are hints about Joe (his and her zodiac sign). That was at the end of 2022, so you can definitely tell they were together at that point. Joe co-wrote songs from Midnight (sweet nothing). So for me, the timeline doesn't fit. I also don't think Midnights is a brake up album. At most the song from the Vault YLM ..

I just realized! At some point early in her career, someone probably told her she looked like Clara Bow, and someone probably told her she looked like Stevie Nicks. How did I not think of this before?!? I thought she was storytelling, but maybe this song is more autobiographical than I thought. I LOVE that she is SO good at storytelling that we can’t tell what’s “real” and what’s fictional. It’s probably much easier for her to maintain her privacy now that she has so clearly demonstrated that she can write amazing songs about people and situations that don’t exist. (I hope that makes sense.) After all, the songs are for us to appreciate and enjoy, not to know all about her personal life.

I just really wanna get this out there bc soo many people are jumping to unfounded conclusions: You have no idea if Joe has tattoos; Joe “stole” Taylor too; that interview was literally in 2018 and the typewriter thing was a throwaway comment, typewriters arent so unusual it could just be a tortured poet reference in general; love bombing can be done by anyone; Matty is sober and she’s referred to Joe doing drugs/ being a drug soo many times; Matty and Taylor were never actually confirmed to be dating; the whole “they’ve been on and off for 17 years 🥺” is pretty much baseless speculation. What we do know: - She’s just got out of a very long term relationship, - We know very little about Joe other than what she’s written about him in songs - Matty signed off on the songs, so the scathing ones probably aren’t about him, or at least aren’t entirely about him. - Songwriters have creative licence, especially someone so talented as Taylor, she could well be merging both guys in her songs for the art- rather than prioritising realism. If you’re going to make assumptions, be critical of them! Use critical thinking skills, not just thinking skills!! Taylor Swift literally just wrote songs about her fans jumping to conclusions and judging her for it, so maybe it’s best to leave our biases at the door and take her language as is. Yes it’s fun to speculate, but it’s also rude! Unless it’s a very specific reference (like the Jehovahs Witness suit line, or the Shakespeare line or imaginary rings line about Joe) which is obviously meant to be understood. Final notes: Why are people talking about Taylor’s love life more than they’re talking about the amazing songwriting she’s just presented us with? What a horribly selfish fan base, to spend the whole time leeching off her social life rather than just enjoying good songs, like most people would.

I just think it was unfinished business with Matty, and it was almost another getaway car-type situation, that was hard and fast and I honestly just don’t think he could handle everything that was thrown at them. And then in so long, london she says I founded the club she's heard great things about. It didn't click for me immediately either because, for me, Healy was like a blip. I didn't know that they'd had a 10 year history. Also I don't defend him. The black women comments just don't sit well with me. I think so much of her lyrics are being taken as disses or attacks and I found them as more of a commentary on herself. Like she says friends either smell like weed or babies but what does that say about where does she fit? She doesn't. There isn't a middle ground for her. Then when she said she could "hix him" I didn't take that as a diss at him as a person either. I took that as "it doesn't matter how much I tell people I love him or that he's a good person, the frenzy cannot be stopped." I also don't feel like the Kim track is as bad either. Like I vaguely remember either an interview or article where she talked about the growth she experienced post the audio leak and she said something to the effect of "we're not saying thank you" for having been put through it all. And now she has, which I take more as her fully letting go. To me she's saying "it is what it is, you'll do you and have your kids be bullies in your stead, but imma say thank you because I've come back stronger." And when people say Kim moved on she should to. What did Kim move on from? she was never globally canceled. Bullies can only reject taking accountability. There is nothing for them to "move on" from.

I lived through all the artist you mentioned and I agree Taylor is much bigger. Don’t forget the Beatles had 3 songwriters in group. Taylor by far is the most prolific songwriter in my lifetime. Elvis had a huge fan base but never had 97000 people come to a concert. He did have women fainting in audience 😊.

I think this album is mostly about Matty and I think that’s because even if things didn’t work out you respect someone you were with as long as she was with Joe enough (no matter what they did) to not drag them in the way that she dragged Matty. Also she had a long time during the slow breakdown of her relationship with Joe to process those feelings while it sounds like Matty led her on by saying he was more emotionally invested than he actually was and then when the going got a bit rough and the public started to turn on her, he ghosted her. She definitely has some scathing things to say to her critical fans and her critics though too, and good for her. The way people try to have an opinion on everything she does is gross.

The Alchemy IS NOT about Travis…1) she has used high school football references forever: 2) it is about getting back with someone you were with after a long time…and the present timing (Travis has no history with her); read the lyrics closely in totality vs a few key football/sports analogies and you will see what I mean.

She's talking about reconnecting with herself and coming back to America after the manic episode she had with joe and matty in the song. 2)Do you really think she's that psychotic to use football references to talk about her relationship with matty when she's currently dating a football player? 3) keep in mind we don't know how they met except what they told the public. They may have seen each other in passing before they finally got together. They have so many mutual friends for it to happen. The man has had a crush on her since 2022 so his heart has been reserved for her for a long time. 4)She put it on the acceptance playlist with so high school, the Spotify video of it was when post was reaching for her hand and they zoomed into their hands. She was wearing travis' bracelet and post was wearing a pinky ring. Travis usually wears those. Also someone took a photo of the alchemy lyrics in their vinyls and she drew hearts beside the word chorus. And she has been reposting articles that say it's about him. I don't think she'd do all these things if she didn't mean it was for Travis. She never went this hard for joe to prove a song was about him

So to respond to each point in you reply: 1) her whole relationship with Matty post-Joe was in America, not the UK, even though he’s British. I think it is more likely she is reconnecting with Matty because in other songs she references running back to him (Fresh Out The Slammer, etc). 2) Taylor is absolutely psychotic in her lyrics… I have been a fan since debut. She uses metaphors and double-entendres like she invented them. Using football references to mask another song about Mattie (or someone else from her past relationships) is absolutely something she would do. I mean she wrote “I’m having his baby; no, I’m not, but you should see your faces” in a song! She comes hard for that faction of the fandom… Taylor, known for her relationship with her fans… actually came for them. If that isn’t psychotic, I don’t know what is. So that to me isn’t really the strongest argument for why it’s Travis. [And most of this album was in the bag and done before she started dating Travis so if she loved the song & had already written it…I can easily see her saying, “leave it in.. let them think what they want”. 3) maybe, but I think it’s a bit of a stretch given she was with Joe and pining for Mattie (clearly for years)… 4) this kind of makes me laugh… I have 40+ years of senior level marketing experience. Taylor is nothing but an excellent marketer… one of the best ever. If I was sitting at the table with her I would tell her to make it about Travis even if it’s not. There is zero marketing value in pushing the your truth if there is no value in it. Perception is reality, and Taylor knows that all too well (ugh, can’t believe I just typed a pun). But seriously, we already know a lot of fans didn’t like Matty, won’t like that so much is about him already, so let them think it’s about Travis. And as for the bracelet in video - look again. It is the TTPD bracelet she is selling (I said she is an excellent marketer… she has put her own merch in videos before. The pinkie ring… 🤷🏻‍♀️… so blurry. But again, if it feeds the fans (because you know she sees what we want), fine. As for going hard to prove a song is about Joe… she lived with him for 6.5 years… she put out 5 albums during that time. Did she have to go that hard? 😂. She references his buzz cut in Dress. 😂 In conclusion… Taylor is very good at writing songs that are open to interpretation and can be relatable in many ways. I think, due to the clear recurring themes in the songs, that she had a long-held crush/flirtation that was actually reciprocated and believed if they ever got their timing right… an explosion of true love and finally finding her soulmate would materialize. She banked a LOT on that clearly because she writes about it repeatedly on this album touching on various aspects of that dream she had, and then how it crashed & burned. And I feel that The Alchemy reiterates that concept. But if it makes you happy to believe it as about Travis… that is okay. 👌🏻

@@LaurenLipman They use a lot of black&white themes, it’s their signature style. Matty is known to write songs on a typewriter!! His signature thing. Fortnight It’s giving 1975 big time!! Black&White imagery, silent films, synth-pop. It’s literally them with a female lead vocalist…The last album is called “Being Funny In a Foreign Language”, 2022, sounds very similar to TTPD ( they both worked with Jack Antonoff and they reconnected through it, it was way earlier than people think). The main Song “About You” was written about Taylor ( confirmed by Matty). The lyrics go: “i know a place It's somewhere I go when I need to remember your face We get married in our heads Something to do while we try to recall how we met” And later: Wait (don't let go) and pretend (don't let go) Hold on and hope that we'll find our way back in the end. Besides, he is constantly wearing a suit, dresses formal ( signature look), has droopy “bedroom eyes” that she mentions in the album. Back in 2014 he was serenading Taylor with his song “Falling For You”. It was when they first started forming a deep bond but fell apart because he wasn’t ready for a serious relationship. However, they stayed in contact… During pandemic he reached out to her, the love bombing began! While she was still with Joe ( but the romance was already fading, as we know now).

The song 'the downtown lights' by The Blue Nile is a song sampled in The 1975 song Love it if we made it. Also the opening synth used in imgonnagetyouback sounds very similar to Looking for somebody to love by the 1975.

This album is all Matty. So is Reputation. There are songs on other albums too. "All those nights you kept me going, swirled you into all of my poems." He is Taylor's muse, her twin, the one love she cannot get over. I think Cardigan, The One, Question ?, Illicit Affairs, Dancing With Our Hands Tied, End Game, Glitch, Labyrinth, Maroon, Death By a Thousand Cuts, Daylight, Ready For It, Don’t Blame Me, Now That We Don’t Talk, This is Me Trying, Cowboy Like Me, Snow on the Beach, Gold Rush, Closure, Exile, False God, So It Goes, Cruel Summer, the part in Bejeweled about the band…there are more. It would appear that these two have been crushing on each other for a very long time... Matty has songs about Taylor too, one literally titled '"About You". A gorgeous song and Fortnight's twin. As to what did "he do", I think he didn't want his life, family and past scrutinized, insulted and attacked by some of Tay's rabid fans and the media. I say this as a fan of both of them, I get it. At the same time I am sad they couldn't make it work because there is clearly a deep connection between them.

Healy was a rebound. And I love Taylor but in the heartbreak of losing joe, she made a really stupid choice. Which is something we all do. But it's true. Healy is known for being a sexist, racist and a general a**hole. She dated him anyway because she's human. But that was never going to go well. Joe was with her for so long. She wrote most of reputation and Lover about him. And she was with him during folklore, evermore, and I believe also Midnights. There are songs about Ratty Healy but not that many. I think what she was saying with the alcoholic statement was that she was using it as a crutch and no one said anything and that kind of worried her. Like, all these great friends around, why didn't they bring it up? She had to fix it herself and cut way back cuz like another song says "you're on your own kid, always have been," You gotta be there for yourself because the 'industry' of the rich and famous will enable you if you aren't.
