Thanks for sharing Mattie 🙏🙏 I think what I took away from your message is that we are all expendable and nobody is safe from getting cut from their position no matter how high level of your achievements in that field-I like the analogy you used in that you now like to hang with “down to earth people” as opposed to clicks and cultures and I can relate to that formerly being in the music industry now an avid mountain biker it’s been years and don’t get me wrong I still shred on my drums but I now play for the lord in a worship team at church and now I serve a higher purpose, but yah man, when you get into elite circles and clicks it is sooooo fake & toxic and I love what you said that you have no interest in being in that type of element, you tend to have lower tolerance for it as time progresses you realize what matters most in life-this video really resonated with me thank you for sharing brother 🙏 God bless…

I played D1 soccer for 10 years and to be honest I have more fun playing with my friends and family than I did with my team. I'm just getting back into mountain biking and one thing I've learned from skateboarding is that you're going to eat shit but you just have to get back on that board and keep trying and not give up.

I played basketball in college, represented my country (Slovakia) + 9 years pro-ball in Europe. My experience was very similar. A dream became a job and eventually something I don't need in my life anymore. Mtb is a breath of fresh air where I feel free, connected to nature and see ton of new exciting goals and challenges. I love it

I really appreciate the authenticity coming through here! I will always remember the moment I realized I’d run out of talent as a downhill racer. I was all about going PRO, and was part-way there, sponsored and racing the pro/elite category in Canada. A couple of our best pros we’ve ever had - Shandro and Watson - flew through the most technical and scary section of the track while chatting, at a speed higher than my race pace. I realized my brain didn’t work as fast as theirs, and knew I was at the end of my road. FFWD 25 years, and having raced pro/elite in all the drop-bar disciplines, I have a lot more perspective on what life is like for most ‘pros’ and PROS. It’s absolutely gnarly, often lonely, and incredibly narrow. Today I’m glad I didn’t press on, and that I didn’t have the talent. I’ve learned way more taking a bunch of different paths, and I continued to draw from all that experience in my job today, which has nothing to do with bikes. I wish more folks talked openly about life in pro sport….

This reminds of doctorate programs too. I wanted to pursue a phd in english literature but the stars havent aligned. I watched my friend go through it all though. Exactly like youre saying here. You have to become so narrow. Its lonely. Its not even about the passion for it at that point. Its a job. A difficult, stressful job.

I felt the same thing 2 times in my life. When I was a teenager I met this little kid who wants to be a pro violinist. The amount of talent he had was almost scary and he struggled to compete with other scary talented kids. I never wanted to be a pro violinist but that's when I realized that I can't be violinist even if I wanted to. Second time was in college. I thought I was pretty smart and I made to one of the best schools in the country but the first physics class....If my brain was a good single core CPU, there are people with amazing quad core CPU and even they are not remotely close to world best physicists.

Thank you for this, I get so many advice channels saying just believe it and it will happen, but it’s obviously not the case. For my boys I want them to always have a challenge, at whatever level that might be. I want them to learn the lessons you did, how success feels, how failure feels, how they react. Competition is a way to learn about yourself. Hope to catch a ride with you again one day.

Thank you so much for this video. I'm a 42 year-old, novice mountain biker who rides because I fell in love with it a year ago, and have left all sense of competition behind, in other sports I played when I was younger. I love watching pro MTB, and even more so because there's no pressure on me personally to ride like a pro. Your perspective is wonderful and worth hearing, and it makes me understand even more why I've been enjoying your videos, in addition to the interesting content all around . Keep it up!

Humble man, I love it. Thank you for this. I played at FGCU, ‘12-‘14, so seeing you at Jet Blue is dope. People don’t realize how uncontrollable it is for minor league players. It’s tough, like you said. I only ended up playing a year of Indy as a RF and I knew it was my time to move on after that season. Ended up coaching HS for 4 years after that down in Naples, FL and that was the most fun I’ve had with baseball in a long time. Seeing kids you helped develop move on to college ball, even seeing some get drafted is incredibly fulfilling. Giving back is what it was all about to me at that point. Love your perspective man, thank you for sharing. Very easy to relate too and not enough people allow themselves to be vulnerable enough to share these types of stories.

Probably the most important part of success is mentorship, you had someone who mentored you in high school but I think professional level, coach isnt going to cut it. But definitely someone from the outside who believes in you plays a vital role in your journey. You can believe in yourself but if the external force goes against you, it could be demotivating and most people would give up.

College ball player here as well. A lot of pro MTBers don't realise that their sport is a hobby for a lot of us former athletes. What this whole "bumble gate" issue brings forward is perhaps a question of legitimacy of the sport of mountain biking in the global world of sports. Perhaps PinkBike's comments on hobbyists is an insecurity stemming from where their sport stands in the legitimacy of global sports. There are obviously many factors at play here, such as entry costs, geography, and global awareness, but still. (And yes I do think MTB is a sport).

Matty, since you seem to travel a bit on a regular basis making content anyway, have you ever considered reaching out to any organizations that work with “at risk youth” and dropping in to give a casual presentation here or there? You’re such a humble, inspirational, down to earth guy and a great example of how we all have to learn to demonstrate commitment, adapt, accept change and be open to embracing new opportunities. You’ll always remember that coach and you could easily be that guy for somebody. The Big Brothers programs seem to be always short on mentors regardless of where you live. Not sure what it is but life has a deeper purpose for you than pro ball. I really believe that. Just getting more kids on bikes would be something special.

I was born North Side Chi - March '84 at St Joseph's on Lakeshore. My family moved me to Oregon at age 10 and I took to "gravity/alternative sports" - BMX, then mountain/DH... I was a real legit amateur prospect - aged 15 the plan was to go pro maybe 2 years later. But wrecked real bad at Big Bear. I had to fall back on... ugh... education.

Jose Conseco and some other guy who was MVP of the World Series played here in our town for the old Madison Muskies baseball team It was basically a college summer league team where the players would stay at someone's house and play at the local stadium. They are now the Madison Mallards

I wanted to be pro baseball player, too. Didn't work out in college and I'm glad it didn't. I would have missed out on way too much of life. When it's no longer fun it's time to do something else. A lot of things in life are like that.

I have a cousin who made it to Cat1 Womens Pro DH after racing BMX as a child. Every time she raced at a bigger venue she went up against harder competition.

Matty, I'm new to your channel....and what really made me click the subscribe button is the fact that you're NOT all about riding the most expensive mountain bike and wearing the most expensive gear. I got back on a bike, mountain bike specifically, because of the fun, fast, free feeling of being out in nature and challenging my own fitness levels while being able to really have fun. I ride with my family mostly because I feel like everyone gets into these clicks that if you show up on a hardtail you're seemingly frowned on...if you show up on a full suspension, it has to be a 10,000 dollar full suspension or the latest xx eagle this that or other components. I really enjoy your perspective because you emphasize getting back to the fun of mountain biking....keep up the great work and content!! Looking forward to the next episode. Thank you!!

Thanks Matty, this is a great insightful video of your story. Some good advice to share with my kids and the kids I coach in baseball. The love of it must come first and always remind ourselves it's just a game at the end of the day. I've been playing baseball for over 40 years as well as coaching and I still love it, but it has never been my job - though at times it feels like it! All that time I've always ridden bikes, I have a Roscoe and came across your channel while researching them. My other passion if surfing, if you're ever in Australia and would like to give surfing a go get in contact.

I've been biking for 30 odd years and getting out into nature with no rules is where it's at for me. I do enjoy a race but I just make up the numbers. Mountain biking is one of the best things to happen to the human race.

That was a great story, really connected with the 'having a good coach that believes in you' part of it. A coach/teacher that really cares about you changes your life as a kid, makes you believe in yourself in a different way. It's a shame you got released, unfortunately sometimes it really is out of our control. On the other hand, I believe your channel is just taking off, keep it going!

Really great story Matty, I would say that your baseball career was a huge success! I recently watched Moneyball, and the way organizations evaluate players and who stays and who goes is frankly random in many cases. I know they dramatized it, but they would legit use things like how attractive the guy's girlfriend is or how pretty his swing is as a factor in how they see the player. It is what it is, every year another 35 or so rounds of players are drafted and they need to go someplace. Being an undrafted free agent, for whatever reason they put weight on that despite what you do on the field. I don't know what you do for a living right now, but man you need to be a coach. You're extremely well spoken and grounded, you have great stories and your experience is legit for any kid trying to make it in the game or life. I get there's still the grind when coaching, but you'd be great at it.

I didn't know that a pro team would value a draft choice with lower stats than a free agent with better stats. I believe I did learn the lesson within from amateur competition in motorcycle road racing. It was a different thing than track days. I wouldn't want to give back that experience for just about anything but I did consciously think I didn't want to do that to my cycling passion. I think I even thought it from an even younger age because I like ice cream, etc., didn't want to sacrifice everything else in my life. I dared to come close to blurring a job and passion by taking a too low level job at a bike shop when my previous job left me. Don't know if it was fortunate or not that I didn't make enough $ doing that so I had to find something else.

Success is a combination of skill, determination, and luck. That applies to everyone. You had the first two, but the luck part didn't land for you. Many people who succeed forget about the luck component. On a related note, a friend of mine could've gone pro as a musician, but he chose not to. I think the grind got to him and ruined his hobby.

There's saying "If you make your hobby your job, you won't work a day in your life" and I find it untrue. I made one of my hobbies my job and I like my job, but it's more like youe exchange hobby for good job. When it's hobby it's about have fun and or get/make good. When it's job it must make money, which isn't always in line of fun and or your satisfaction.
