He KNEW the captain was suppose to die because he has a spiderverse watch. And yet when the time came he still wanted to try to save him anyway. Just a little detail; in the scene where Miguel is saying a police captain close to spider man dies, it does pan to Hobie for a second who looks away. I can’t quite tell but from what I can see his laces are blue, in punk lace culture that typically means the person has killed a cop. (I don’t mean this in a negative way, I just think it’s an interesting detail and really helps to destabilise Miguel’s argument since it’s implied to be a canon event but Hobie is directly responsible for it rather than an accident)

My personal theory is that canon events basically exist to course correct a Spider-Man into living to their true heroic, “With Great Power Must Also Come Great Responsibility” and only activate when they’re being irresponsible and need a lesson. Miles and Spider-Man India both were acting irresponsible and not taking their job seriously. Spider-Man India saying that “Being Spider-Man is so easy” and Miles treating his villains like a joke and Villains of the Week, directly leading to Spot’s evolution in the movie. And both said that, “They can do both” even though they unrealistically cannot. So that would make the first movie about, “Anyone can be Spider-Man” and these two movies being “What it means to be Spider-Man.” And obviously in the 3rd movie Miles can learn the lesson about responsibility before his dad’s death, so the canon event doesn’t have to occur.

The they can do both moment is part of every Spider-Man. They need their Captain Stacy moment to show them that the job isn’t easy and that it requires more than just great responsibility. Most Spider-Men have three of these moments. Their “Uncle Ben”, “Captain Stacy”, and “Gwen”. These are in quotations because it varies by universe. For instance in Gwen’s universe, the Peter Parker of her universe was both her “Gwen” and “Uncle Ben” moment. He was possibly even her “Captain Stacy” moment since even in the comics he’s the only one she loses.

Miles Morales was always going to be Spider-man. Just not our Miles (1610). During The Spot's flashback, you can see that spider 42 was heading toward biting Miles Morales (42) when it was taken by the collideder. Actually, our Miles (1610) was going to become the Prowler. Thus, it is hinted at in the first movie. When Miles meets blond Peter (1610) and they spidey-sense each other, Peter's colors are the Spider-Man blue and red. And we see Miles's colors go from green and purple (the Prowler's colors) to match Peter's blue and red. And it's hinted at through the way Miles movies. In the first movie, he stated he was better at running than swinging. Throughout both movies, we see Miles abilities grow, from watching the other spider-people. Like in the "thread the needle" scene with Qwen. But it's not as natural for him as it is for the other spider-people, who wouldn't have had a mentor to observe. We even see it in the way Miles (42) moves, as it is much closer to Spiderman's movements instead of the Prowler. He actually does the exact same move when he comes on scene as The Prowler, that Peter does when he comes into his first scene. It becomes of Miles (1610) not moving as Spider-Man like, that he was able to get away from Migual and all the other Spider-people. First, because they were anticipating him moving similar to them, which gave Miles the advantage of appearing unpredictable. Second, they kept getting into each other's way during the chase. And thats because they move/think similarly. And Miles(1610)becoming the Prowler tracks with his behavior and actions in the beginning of the first movie; tagging, trying to get out of the school, sneeking out, ect. Or just the way he looked up to Aaron.

The Spiderverse movies are my all time favourite movies because they're just so well written and animated and the Rio/Miles spanglish is perfect, to the point where you don't even realise it's there unless you know spanish.

Regardless of whether or not the "canon" applies to Miles, or even if there IS a canon, Miguel makes a lot of assumptions about what is canon. Even if a Police Captain is supposed to die, it doesn't mean it has to be a specific Police Captain. Gwen's father quit, but it doesn't mean some other Police Captain won't or can't die. Which could also mean that a Police Captain other than Jeff could be the one to die instead. Edit: Also, props for being one of the few people who understands the actual reason VFX and animation are lacking sometimes instead of just saying the VFX artists are bad at their job.

So I think the canon "fixed" itself by making miles the new spider-man and so Uncle Aaron dying was a canon event, and his dad dying as the captain is a canon event too. BUT. The fact that the canon fixed itself is the important part here. Why is the dimension allowing miles to be spider-man without glitching? Whatever the answer to that question is will likely be the answer to how Miles fixes this whole ordeal. He is the original anomaly and so he is in a unique position (as a multidimensional being) to change the canon without consequence, because its seen as fixing instead of breaking. Or something. I'm really glad you had a great time watching this film! 😊 You know, I personally believe we live in a multiverse, and sometimes I feel the need to go back to a certain event in the past and change something to make things better for myself. I would want to go and change my "canon event." Yes, I know it sounds silly, and it's part of the true moral of the story, which is the fact that certain events in the past are the ones that shape us into who we are, but I just can't help it. I would usually think that if traveling through time becomes possible in real life and we somehow discover that the universe can give us free will to branch out different streams (alternate timelines) without breaking the fabric of reality just like any Marvel film/sci-fi film, then our own current stream and "canon event" wouldn't be altered at all. Thus, it is the solution to the multiverse theory and paradoxes. It sounds a lot similar to "Avengers: Endgame", but I would say that the branching streams scenario is pretty beneficial. I still hope I get the opportunity to go to the past and change something before I pass away soon. But either way, I'm grateful for what I have right now in the present moment. Let's just focus on building a better future for ourselves and wait to see what happens how nature reacts to how we interact with things in the past if time travel becomes possible. Remember, it's not possible as of now based on our current understanding of physics, but I'm sure we'll find a safe way to change things without messing up our own stream. What do you guys think? Is there an event you would want to change and create a new stream if you could?

the cannon event does apply to jeff but only because miles was bitten, when the spider bit miles it was glitching but miles does not glitch in his own universe meaning the cannon events only happen when someone is bitten as you can see the peter from miles universe no longer has a web since he died but miles does have one. it doesnt matter where the spider is from it matters who the spider bites, once someone is bitten by the spider their entire web in the spiderverse is created, the cannon events for each person dont exist until they become a spider person

The Miles vs Miguel dilemma is basically just a fancy version of the Trolley Problem. Do you allow one person to die to save the many? There are many examples of this in superhero movies, all with their own unique twists. I find it fascinating to debate. In this specific case in my opinion, Miguel is actually right - because if the canon in Miles’ universe collapses, Jeff dies anyway, along with everyone else in the universe, and also risks other universes as well. The cost of saving Jeff is simply not an option, and Miles is acting irrationally out of emotion. However as you said, Miguel is a bit of an ass and blames/hates Miles personally, so it’s difficult to take his side. And in this example we’re also ASSUMING Miguel is not only correct but also telling the whole truth. I’d be willing to bet he’s either incorrect or lying about something, like maybe he’s causing problems with the canon trying to get his family back and is being hypocritical making everyone else hold theirs together. Or as you said, maybe the canon doesn’t work the same way for Miles because he was never supposed to be Spider-Man. I bet we’ll get a twist along those lines in Beyond the Spider-Verse. Or who knows, maybe Jeff will really die! That would be as good a twist as any.

You have a lot of the same questions I did at the end. I think there’s 3 possibilities: 1. It’s as you say and Spider-Man canon does not apply to Morales. If this is the case, I think Miguel knows because canon does not apply to him either because he is also not a “real” Spider-Man that canon does not apply to. And if everyone realizes it about Mikes, then Miguel will be found out too. 2. Canon doesn’t apply to Morales, but it does to his reality. He lives in a reality where there was a Spider-Man, but somehow in 10 years of him operating, the “captain” event hasn’t happened yet (even though it seems to happen early to all the others?”. In this case, a captain close to Spider-Man still needs to die. Being Miles’ father is just a coincidence. Also, this makes things awkward for Gwen’s reality- her father may be safe from this fate, but isn’t another police captain doomed? Assuming her dad was THE captain to die. There’s a lot of police captains in New York. 3. Something else they actually have planned that will make sense of these questions and a whole bunch of others that are brought up, but they have not given us enough information yet to solve it. I lean towards 3! But I’m worried no conclusion can really tie this up completely. Time/space manipulation plots are the worst because causality gets broken and no matter what, it doesn’t fully add up. Here’s hoping!

Yea, the cannon did apply to Miles from what I can see, His world was only meant to have one spiderman, where others can have him and peter (Like the one from the game) But this one was meant to be only 1 spiderman, forcing the world to pick between Miles and Peter, and Miles wasn't really in danger right then, and the time it took peter to save miles when he fell, peter lost that time and didn't end up turning off the collider. So now with the world wanting to push to Spiderman role on Miles, the Uncle ben (Uncle arron dying) was needed as a connan event. Well thats just what I think of the situation.

I think Miguel using his watch to force a universe to let him stay and play the family man for so long is what fucked up that universe, not some violation of a sacred storyline. The universe has consistently started unmaking anyone in the wrong universe because they're occupying space meant to be occupied by something else and that breaks some basic physical laws. I think Miguel is a bit blinded by his trauma and the Canon Event narrative he's enforcing is some authoritarian coping mechanism. Miles saving his dad is a lot different than being in the wrong universe against that universe's will. It's not like the building Spot covered in Spot Goo would suddenly stop doing what it was doing because some police inspector died. Don't make sense.
