Matty Durant, aka Mattystuntz, spent a year and a half in his house suffering from severe anxiety and panic attacks. He and I dive into that and what it took for him to come back out of the dark places and get back out into the world.
Ironically, the thing that led us into the conversation on mental health was a conversation on clickbait. I fully confessed my sometimes aggressive titles, and he seemed ok with it. ;)

I have no idea how I walked through so much school without much effort and now hate every day of my life when I'm at work yet never developed any crushing mental issues. Anyone can tell I'm definitely not always sound of mind and due to my upbringing influences I'll never be good enough for myself but somehow I just keep going while wondering if the mental health hammer will ever debilitate me. Here's maybe the darkest thing that shocks me every time I think about it. After my car accident I was stuck in a bed for about 9mo and was almost totally incapable of anything for another three or four months. I actually enjoyed being broken because it meant I gave myself a free pass not to work or be obligated to do anything. I did whatever I truly wanted to do which ended up being FPV. I now look at handicap people very differently. I'm still broken in many ways and there is quite the psychological toll from such an injury but holy hell was it sweet to have freedom from self induced and external stresses. Handicap people live their lives at least a little more free of obligation. Not like it's great and not the same for everyone of course but now I truly don't see handicap people as different than anyone else. They're not owed any extra leeway imo and they don't want it either. They're just as capable as anyone else. Now what trips me up is what life is like for people that were born blind or something like that. If you never had it to begin with, do you miss it? Does pity from others make you feel worse? Also, does Matty get the same anxiety from flying over or around a bridge? 🙈

Thanks Bob. The self-imposed strive for perfection (or whatever it is) must suck. Me personally, I’m glad you recovered, but I do understand the “free pass” thing. Some days I give myself a free pass because I feel like dying. And yeah, I meant to ask Matty that. Wish I had.

Bob, I worked a lot in my area and could reserve some money... Now I can't anymore, because my depression got really worse from like a decade till now... So what I did is to put my money to work for me. I bought 2... places here in my city... I don't know the name in English, but terrain for a house, that was clean... You know? And constructed in one of them already and rented it. So, since the end of the 2019 I started to receive an amount of money from it. (That I'm already spending in my parent's house. 😬) And in the future I think about investing in other things. You know? Anyway... Maybe you should start to think like that. You already have FPV Cycle, but you should never put all your money in just one thing. You know?

I think FPV is good for mental health because flying requires total concentration which gives the mind a break from everything else.

Matty I truthfully view you as one of the greatest innovators of freestyle FPV and since I don't partake in any other social platforms was saddened to think that maybe you just stopped flying or chose to stay out of the spotlight for good. Until your interview with Michael I didn't really know what type of person you were, just that you are a great pilot. I now see that you are actually pretty humble and I thank-you for opening up and sharing your experience. FPV for me and many others is therapeutic and when share intimate parts of your life journey it inspires people just much if not more than your flight videos. I'm glad to hear you're alive and well and can't wait to see what you do next.

You know, I live with depression since 1992. I deal with it daily. I do meds for years, did a lot of therapy... But nothing really ever helped. You know? I used to suffer less, but my life was still in the dark place. Constantly. To go to the college, for example, every day was a sacrifice. And I ended up getting used to that, to the point where I went there to the library during weekends... Not to study, but to help friends to study. I helped even guys that weren't from our class... Only recently I started to really get better. First because I started to do things (DIY - long story, but I did it a lot when I was a kid and so on), then I started to record videos... Then I started taking melatonin (because of my psychiatrist) and started to sleep better and so on. And now, FPV. So... I thought about suicide. A lot. But I don't anymore.

MC, there has been a lot of interesting research into Ketamine and how a few small doses seem to combat depression in a much more effective way than any anti-depressant. It has to be administered via IV, so it's not an over the counter thing (it's also a hallucinogenic) but maybe you should see if it's an option in Brazil. It's just now getting used here in the US and insurance won't cover it. But when you're chronically depressed you may do anything to feel better.

Damn it. Matty I can relate so much bro. Big Mike, you sir are absolutely amazing. I love what you do for the community, bringing all these famous pilots, and making them relatable makes them seem so much more real to me. Don’t let the haters bother you, what you do is a great service for us all. And for anyone who is struggling with mental health, from one survivor to the next, there is a better side, and a brighter time ahead. I’m always here for anyone who needs someone to talk to. Find the help you need, don’t be too proud. It’s nothing to be ashamed of. Much love and positivity to all.

Great episode. I've definitely been in some dark places before, usually in the wintertime when there is little to no sun. It helps a lot to take vitamin D . On another note, can't agree more with Matty about how bad clickbait has gotten. Thanks for taking the time to do these Michael!

I have several people close to me go through some similar issues talked about here. I’d say the biggest problem was denial, and refusal of help. It’s great you guys talk about it. Don’t spend $40 grand a year on school for kids. Kids are resilient.

Thanks for talking about such a important issue! Please try to persevere with the prescribed medications - relapses from going off of them often trigger a deeper decline and resets your baseline. I see the result of drugs and other “natural” therapies daily in the ER and the outcomes from poor management of mental health and it’s not pretty. Definitely exercise, sleep, eat health, etc, but for most, that’s not good enough. People take medications for diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and are on dialysis for kidney disease....they are not weak simply because they have to rely on a therapy or a medication.

I think it's a good idea. Mental health and FPV have a huge link. I had a spinal injury. I was devistated. I found FPV and it was huge. It's a GREAT inclusive hobby. It got me out of a wheelchair. Now I am struggling with medical bills and another whole thing... Cancer! Depression is a black hole. FPV is still my love, but survival has become a priority. I praise you for what you do. It's good for everyone to talk about REAL STUFF. There is a link between mental and physical health...

Regardless if you don’t think your that guy Matty you have become that guy. Your an awesome person who is human. We’re all human and have our problems. What matters is how we deal with those problems. We can not let them run our lives. We must deal with them head on talk about them with our friends or a professional. You have made the first step by talking about it. Now tackle that thing head one and don’t let it hold you back any longer!!!!!! We all have problems we have to learn from our mistakes and push on. Do what you love don’t let anyone or anything stop you.

I didnt make money in fpv because people discriminated against my mental health. I helped invent drone racing and the industry as we know it, and people like chris Thomas and Scot Refsland told people not to work with me because I'm mentally ill. I tried to kill myself in the hospital and don't even remember it...depression and anxiety would be nice...I'm on celxa and lithium now, in therapy...I don't know what I have, they'll probably define it after I'm dead...listening to mental health become a thing in fpv when it's what kept me from it is really hard. Frankly it's insulting, but I know you or matty had nothing to do with my situation...but damn....

I hear you Im on respiradal, seroquel, and fluoxitine. I feel very much like you. My problem isolated me and put me in a corner at the only race event Ive ever gone to.....nobody there was supportive, not even the acquaintances I went with. So many folks talk a great game but when they see it, they have no idea how to actually handle anything beyond anxiety....which seems to be a trend in a lot of areas these days. I can't work, I fly alone, and interact with people outside of my family very minimally so as to save myself and them some kind of uncomfortable outburst. Stay strong, hopefully the next med adjustment is a good one for you, I know how that goes.

@29:35 totally agree about the exercise thing. When my body got really screwed up and I could no longer retreat into the concentration necessarily demanded of a heavy lift, that commitment of fpv locking in ones saccade was a great alternative hack to find some peace in that flow. @@MichaelRollins Oh I know it wasn't a disparaging remark. The main difference is that my mania comes with strong delusions, for me the delusions have a lot to do with my perceived abilities and a sense of fame, they also revolve around my mother who I often believe is manipulating my life from behind the curtain if you get my meaning...none of which are real. Its bipolar with extra audio and visual elements when manic really, Bipolar + lol.
