Maud of Wales, Queen consort of Norway

Maud Charlotte Mary Victoria, born 26 November 1869 died 20 November 1938. Was Queen of Norway as the wife of King Haakon VII. She was the youngest daughter of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra of the United Kingdom. Before her marriage, she was known as Princess Maud of Wales because her father was Prince of Wales at the time.

She had an unbelievably tiny waist. I'm sure she was small but the corset likely was uncomfortably tight. I'll never understand why it was so desirable.

I know most times the illusion of a small waist was created by padding in other areas to create the shape. But when looking at her shoulder width, her waist does indeed seem very small. Her mother and sisters also seem to be very cinched in at the waist. Perhaps in that particular family, tight-lacing was the norm. But it wasn't the norm for most women.

The silhouette of her clothes and the padding especially in the bust made it look more extreme. But she was also thin along with her husband. If she was truly uncomfortable she wouldn’t have done that daily for years. And maid embraced looser silhouettes that came into fashion towards the 1910’s.

No, she and her husband married and stayed in the UK as children of the monarch until he was suggested by the UK to become king of Norway after the dissolution of personal union of Norway and Denmark. Their son, the future King Olav V was also born and raised in the UK.
