3-11-2011 the tsunami caused by the earthquake in Japan arrives on Ma'alaea Bay on Maui. First the water recedes, remains that way for maybe 5 minutes, then moves back in, resembling a rapid tidal change.

The fact this phenomenon (even if small in scale) was generated by a volcano 5-5,000 miles away, still makes it watchable and fortunately safe in this instance.

I'm sure by the time it reached Hawaii (4,000 + miles) much of the energy was spent. I've watched the videos of the Japanese cities from that tsunami and it is scary, the quickness, depth and force.

The one thing you should never do. Break out a lawn chair to watch the small tsunami come in. I have seen people do that, expecting a six inch tall wave only to be shocked when the wave was over a meter tall with them trying desperately to save the small children they brought with them to watch. If it wasn't for other people helping, they would have lost at least one of their kids if not two of them.

This was certainly a tsunami, albeit a worn out one. I live in Maui and remember this. It’s not just a low tide, it never looks like this unless some seismic activity occurs.
@danielmeiland24702 жыл бұрын
why is a tsunami only interesting, when people die? This is a small Tsunami where you can see what's happening before and react if that happens if you are on a beach.

No, it wasn't. The wave was smaller because it travelled from Japan. The tide isn't usually that high at that time of day in Hawaii.

The tide can’t come in that fast. It was the remnant of a tsunami

That was no Tsunami! A real Tsunami, they would not be able to outrun, especially after “waiting for the wave to actually pass the small inlet!!!
@sigisoltau60732 жыл бұрын
Well that depends on the seafloor before the coast. And on the slope before the shelf. You have the beach like here, then a shelf beneath the surface, then a slope that goes down to the seafloor several kilometers beneath sea-level. If the slope is steep enough it can deflect some of the energy from the wave back out to the open ocean. Also if the shelf extends far enough and is really shallow far enough that can also break the wave energy. Back in 2004 Bangladesh was actually spared the worst of the tsunami because of such a long shallow shelf, whereas India and Sri Lanka had waves up to 12 meters high because of the narrower shelf. Plus the tsunami came from the North, this bay faces south, so most of the wave energy was lost going around the island.
@penguinlim2 жыл бұрын
you don't get to decide what is and isn't a tsunami just because it doesn't meet your standards of killing hundreds. And, if you had bothered to read the description, you would know that this very same tsunami killed 18-20 THOUSAND people in Japan. This tsunami in hawaii is the tsunami after travelling 3800 miles from Japan.

When water leaves and comes back within a few minutes, it's no tide but a weak tsunami from an earthquake far away! Glad that there wasn't any higher waves, because those people in the front row had no idea what happened!
@sigisoltau60732 жыл бұрын
That's because the wave came from the north and this bay faces south. The island basically blocked most of the wave energy.

The quick rush of water (if you bothered to watch) coming in and covering up the rocks was the Tsunami. A Tsunami isn't this 50 ft. huge tidal wave you were led to believe by fake news channels.

tsunami is a continuous surge of water that came from an earthquake, the further the tsunami travels the weaker it is it doesn't have to be a huge wave to be a tsunami
