Mauna Loa lava update

Some notes from today’s 9am press conference: Tuesday, 11.29.22 • Lava is traveling at less than a mile per hour. • The lava is somewhere between 5 and 6 miles from the Daniel K. Inouye highway at this time. • Mauna Loa produces a lot more volcanic gas than Kilauea typically. Keep monitoring winds. • Fissure 1 & 2 are now inactive. They became inactive around midday yesterday. Fissure 3 is the main producer. A new fissure (Fissure 4) appeared overnight, but is producing only minor flows. • No parking on Daniel K. Inouye highway, only in designed parking areas. • Instead you can visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Time your visit before 9am or after 9pm when it is less busy, but also when the viewing is quite spectacular. You can see both eruptions from that one vantage point. • You can see the #Maunaloa eruption from just about anywhere on the island. • Lava has crossed Mauna Loa Observatory road • Shelters will be closing today as officials expect those communities are no longer at risk • Officials say this lava event could last anywhere from days to a year… they don’t know. However, on average these types of flows last 1-2 weeks.
