Young people raised on movie soundtracks rather than concert hall music should get a shock now hearing this. "OMG what film is this?" Its significance far outstretches the characters of Daphne and Chloe. I hear a whole century of cinematic music in this piece.
@leoinsf3 жыл бұрын
Dave, if you look at some of the other pieces Ravel wrote: "Bolero", etc. you see this cinematic quality to his music. However, Daphnis goes straight to cinematic heaven! The bottom line is that he wrote it as a ballet, not a symphonic work. It was support for the visual brilliance of his ballet. And to think that most of us have never seen this in the form Ravel wrote it: as a ballet. It is so sad because in symphonic performances, the instruments dance (and sing) and this is part of the attraction of this piece. I cannot speak cogently about "Daphnis and Chloe" because it is so beautiful that I melt, my mind gushes, and my emotions run wild! I am a "Daphnis/Chloe" freak. Frankly, I consider it the greatest orchestral work ever written. I am probably the only Ravel-worshipper on the planet. I am attempting the Maltempo arrangement of Suite #2 Daphnis et Chloe.
@lloydhinshelwood3 жыл бұрын
Soo many early 20th century composers are relentlessly recycled without correct credit. Holst, Ravel, Stravinsky etc style and influence make up the core components of the great modern film composers and most are sadly ignorant of where the creativity and style comes from.

@@leoinsf The symphony performances (of the 2 suites) also miss out the choir (featured in the original ballet and full score). Loved your post. Almost all Ravel's orchestral pieces strikes me as the greatest orchestral work ever written while playing! My favourites are the Mother Goose Suite and then the full Daphnis et Chloe ballet score, with Le Tombeau de Couperin a close third. ☺️

For me, ravel is a fascinating composer who symbolises everything good about music. It allows him to take the listener, or the player, into his own mind, his world. The world that experienced world war one, and the death of family members, and just the world in general over a hundred years ago. Therefore music is the only true way of preserving emotion, and this is where its true power lies. Words can portray thoughts, video can portray beauty, but there is no form of communication for feelings other than music. Its a universal language, and you can hear the immensity of Ravel's suffering, hope, happiness, tragedy, anger etcetera, in this piece.
