The burnt ruins was the Weatherby home who owned the property. It burned out around 1980 but was empty at the time. They farmed the area and also fished the river during the Shad run. They also ran hunting trips for waterfowl for hunters. The ravines and pits were left from digging out pockets of gravel for industrial use. Cargill was a place they would ship out the local grown grains. After it was built, they found out to make any money they needed to use 300 foot motorized barges for hauling. But once they had them there it left no room for it to turn around and head back to the bay. They had to back them out which wasn't efficient. We use to ride motorcycles through there pre Nature Conservancy. Was known as River Run.

This place is amazing. That concrete will stand there for a very long time. It's a massive site. Thank you for this!
