Also don't be fooled by the comments at the beginning. I still don't take requests. I just happened to decide these trains next. Anyways, a clove of garlic, some Lidl brand granulated sugar, a Greggs saussage roll and a stoat will be on offer to 317Dan if he manages to guess all the stations filmed at. If not, they'll be sent to Sealand for a tax write off.

Honestly, I am and have always been a fan of the Aventras, but I can't argue with this video, it's well-argued and well-put together from a largely non-biased standpoint. Well edited too. Thanks for uploading!

Remember the Elizabeth line was already delayed runs on a line that goes to one of the most busy airports in the nation and the 345 didn’t have toilets, luggage racks and charging points are now only just being added… and they are already debating a second crossrail

I have ridden on both a 755 and a 720 back to back, and the 755 feels like absolute luxury compared to the 720. The seats are so much nicer, and the layout of the seats allows you to walk through the aisle at a reasonable speed while facing forward. It's amazing how different the interiors of these units can be even when it's the same company.

as someone who has ridden every day on both 720s feel alot nicer than the stadlers. Tbf the first class on the 745s are decent aswell

5:06 The NYC Subway R179s has the same exact motors as the 720. Not the 422 you’re thinking of but different motors like the Talent 2s and 3s

Roses are red, I've seen a cocker spaniel, Today's a good day With Maverick Hunter Daniel As an aside note, one neat little trick found on the Aventra is that if you open the door and hold the interior door open button, that door won't automatically close, so this would be useful for detecting when the train is ready to depart. Can't speak if this exists on the 720, but it works on the 345 and 710.

Oh yeah. I think the 707 also has that too. It's used by dispatch staff who need to keep the door open to apply a wheelchair ramp.

This works on 720s aswell. However when at terminus stations dont do it as holding the button can close the doors on that carriage

Brilliant as all these reviews are. I am still patiently waiting for the Desiro review in case you had forgotten. This video has been a long time coming which is ironic given the massive delays getting these unit shifters into service. Anyway, a like from me ❤😀👌👍

A problem with double decker trains is dwell times. You would have to sacrifice lots of space to gangways to move people in and out of the trains quickly, or you would end up with longer dwell times, and you might not even end up increasing your overall line capacity by that much. Like you said, longer trains that have more doors are a better use of resources.

That's exactly why I used the MI 2N as an example. It gets around the dwell time issue somewhat by having 6 wide doors per coach and being double decker trains. When you add cab signalling and fast accelaration that matches (or in the case of the MI 09 version, faster accelaration), you can have 30tph during the peak, or about 80,000 passengers total. Not bad I'd say.

Since you said about the lack of luggage racks on the 345, we do have them in greece thanks to one of our EMU the line 3 ATTIKO METRO 2nd Generation dual voltage though they lack toilets when they run to Eletherios Venizelos airport, the displays can scroll but they can change depending what its says, green when they arrive at a destination, yellow when they go to a next stop, and red show the airport ticket, the ticket cost a 9€, its worth mentioning that 2nd gen has perfect window alignment and 2+2 thought and the dont have first class (BTW: my comment in the beginning at 0:00 for those who dont know)

Thank you for including the awfulness of the A316 in your documents of complaints. I will be thinking about the lack of Hounslow loop services as I sit in a traffic jam by Hospital Bridge roundabout. I also don’t think those 701s will be running by December, SWR will probably find a way to delay it by another 2 years and scrap all the 455s: it won’t be long until 4-5 car London - Reading services start or something similar because of the “new” trains.

My journey uses both the class 345s and the 700 with their ironing board seats and in all honesty the class 700s seats feel like luxury compared to the 345s they have somehow made their seats out of left over rocks from the tunnels but made them look nice soft and plump

Is it as much of an introduction farce as the Stadler Metro Class 777? 5 years, for a phased introduction, where new trains are often taken out of service due to teething troubles.

I don't recall Merseyrail giving out free travel to Kirkby as an apology or them dredging up a Class 508/2 because they had to send some 507s and 508s away as a result of the delays. So because of that, yes I think it's worse than the Class 777s introduction.

Travel costs aren't cheap, especially in the UK so unless you are willing to cover those costs, please be paitent for when I am ready to make it. Nothing screams entitled more to me than being offered a free cake and, instead of giving your thoughts on the cake, you just say "more cake."

Love it! Great video, again!😊 Its so stupid how the WAML was 8 car 317s which is fine as they fit the platforms, but now its either 5 or 10 car 720, the 10s are too long so its always 5 on the crowded hertford east stopper, bishop stortford, or cambridge. Come on guys... Ps, the pet peeves about emrs luton thing being damn expensive is honestly so true. They charge us intercity prices for a roughly 1 hour commute to london on emr connect, no sorry, "luton express", fuck me. Ludicrous.

Exactly! It's either the train is too short or the train is too long for the plaforms at so many stations on that section. Even Hackney Downs is an issue. Again, it's like they didn't have any degree of foresight in planning. Also do not get me started with the legalised scam that is the MML.

With GA’s 720s, operationally it makes sense to go with 5 cars rather than 9 cars because of flexibility on services. Means you can have the necessary amount of coaches for a quieter services and still have the ability to attach for busier services. Now yes, you do have situations where they shorten trains down because of “faults” or whatever. However, it’s better to have 1 5 car running than a 9 car sat out of service and trains cancelled - which ultimately is unnecessary fines GA would have to pay.

I agree with you, the Aventras are everything that annoys me about Modern UK Railways, cheap, lifeless and designed by people who don't use public transport!. There's a reason why I don't care about anything beyond 2002 with UK railways.

I actually think the Aventra's are pretty good. The 720's main issue is the 2 + 3 seating, however GA did that due to passenger interviews along the GEML and Southend lines, so blaming them seems a bit hopeless.

Even then, it's hard to take the results of the survey seriously when the designed gangway of the train so difficult to walk down.

@@MaverickHunterDaniel True. The Class 321s and 360s also had this issue so I'm pretty used to it as I live along the line. Apparently c2c's 720s will get rid of some of the 2+3 seating and replace it with 2+2 but keep some of the 2+3, so we'll see if that helps at all.

Also, as far as I know, the length of a 10 coach 720 is the same as a 12 coach 321 or 360, so it effectively has the same capacity when they are coupled together.

note: the plug sockets on the 720 on a good day will barely work. its like they are running on a AA battery. the 720 also has a problem with the PA system: its either too loud, or isnt working. You didnt stress enough of how bad the seats and their layout they really are, i am a short king, and very skinny just to put it into a guitarists context, you'd be lucky to fit a fender telecaster through the gap of the 3+2 seats and not dent it.

I must be lucky honestly with regards to the announcements and plug sockets. I've used them multiple times (including the day before I uploaded this video) and they worked fine each time I used them.

Nope, I do not allow that. The junipers are faulty but have good seats and toilets. Also I can walk down the aisles without walking sideways because (at least with the 458/5) the interiors were designed by human beings who use trains.

I do personally love the Elizabeth lines trains. And I'm saying this as someonywho jsut moved 2 months ago from paris. Compared to most parisian trains, the interior is perfect for the services they run, and the info screens are great, not dutch great but great. Seats are grand, and the lack of toilets is standard in France. The only french trains that are better are the Z50000 trains which are stunning inside and out. We do benefit from a gauge that can actually support comfortably 3+2 seating. Who knows maybe in the future the UK will someone completely update its loading gauge to fit normal sized trains, where they can be both comfortable, spacious and high capacity all at once!

I was always indifferent to Aventras, but that's mostly because I moved away from the GA and TfL network a year after they began to be introduced. All I'll say is - I do like the 345s. Not as much as the 315s, but for their purpose, it means we get a fast and actually air conned underground line for the capital. But the Aventra shows once again why I've fallen more in love with buses than trains in recent years. Buses ACTUALLY get proper interiors with bigger companies... Trains get fucked by the DfT and cheaply run operators. The only modern train I adore is the FLIRTs

I'm inclinded to agree with you on bus interiors, especially since the latest batch of Enviro400EVs with Go Ahead London have really nice high back seats. There are still plenty of modern trains that I like myself, but only a handful of them run in the UK.

As a local of the 345 I hate them and prefer taking the 387 since there are tables and more direct charging 166 was absolute heaven compared to the current trains USB charging is provided at the link between each carriage

I recently went of a 345 and it seems like TFL is slowly learning their mistake regards to the lack of charing points as they are adding them to the ends of the coaches and by the seats. But only on one side when I saw them. Very TFL to do something half arsed like that.

My station, Maidenhead is served by the Elizabeth line, my ears are broken, I try to avoid these at all costs. So I always take the marlow branch line to get a connecting gwr train, yes my station is served by electrostars 😔

I feel like although the information displays have advanced the way they are displayed on adventra’s, especially the 710’s and 345’s, is terrible. If most of the seats are longitudinal I’ve noticed that it seems easier, or more natural, to look across the seat for information so I think to make the customer experience better for customers maybe some information screens would have to be across from the seats and able to be seen by everyone. It’s like the screens are almost designed not to be seen. I know they are just a disability requirement, but don’t studies show that when you make disability accommodations more accessible it usually benefits everyone. Also, maybe this would happen in the future, but maybe the metro variants should be more different to the intercity or commuter variants. Maybe the overground variant should have more doors per car.

I went down to london last week and managed to ride all of these. I honestly really like them, but thats coming from a northerner stuck with fecking 40 year old sprinters on mid cheshire with not even a hope for a replacement... these trains wont last half as long as the 745/755s for example but hey, at least they're enough to make northern commuters simp😂

@@MaverickHunterDaniel If I recall, it was something about fumes building up in battery boxes, then igniting and popping off the battery compartment covers with enough force to potentially injure workers if they happened to be standing next to it. The cause was something like a batch of faulty batteries or something. There's a reasonable amount of discussion on it buried somewhere on railforums uk

I was out in the West Anglia territories, mainly the Hartford East branch, and out of every train I tried with GA, all of them except 1 had been a 720 Walking through the train was a pain in the butt with that awful 3+2 seating, its so narrow I kept banging my arms against the seats several times The only good thing I had with the 720s was the charging points, and actually running on time, thats about it lol And 345s, I really want to like them considering Crossrail is something I have used often on any visit to London (and will again soon) but the interior and lack of facilities kills it, 710s are the same as well Wow I had a lot to say 😂

With regards to modern traction The best sounding by far are CAF civities and Stadlers. Bombadier and seimens after 2012 sound like.. eww. Seimens uk have always had some bland motor sounds. But bombadier joined them after the electrostars

If it makes you feel any better, there are plenty of new trains in mainland Europe that sound excellent. The Velaro D, Desiro HC, Desiro Mainline, Coradia LINTs, Stadler WINK, ICNG, Vectron and so on...

@MaverickHunterDaniel oh yeah i know I did research ad a result of how bored I was with the newer stock in the uk. At least desiro cities and aventras. Class 745s , 331s and 385s sound the best out of the modern units , if southern and southeastern get new stock I'd much preffer CAF or hitachi do it. And then stadler if all else fails. Like we need something that has IGBTs but sounds similar to a 96 stock or something. Even modern Japanese trains can sound LOUD. I do have footage of class 730s and some motor sounds , they sound bland but better than the rest ofnthe aventras so far. They hum at speed at least kzbin.info/www/bejne/hnikd4WgqMyKldksi=LowZ-gjwMxx-w82S I think my favourites from mainland Europe are the Desiro HCs and talent 3 (talent 2&a half apparently)

Whoever here likes 3+2 seating, 3+2 seating is terrible and you haven’t been on the class 720 towards London from Tottenham on a Saturday evening as doing that is just a nightmare. Especially when it has to go through Stratford because of engineering works at hackney downs. Like he said in the class 323 video “3+2 seating is gay” and that’s true.

Yep, you've basically summed up my exact opinion on these trains pretty well. They've grown on me a little bit now (bar the 701), but at the same time they're still godawful units. Not to mention they ride like horseradish. But yes, a very enjoyable video. Keep it up 👌

If you think the 345s and 710s are bad, come over here to Seoul (where people treat commuter and metro trains as the same thing) and do the *full 4-hour journey* on Metro Line 1 with *no bins, no power sockets, no toilets,* and especially *_NO TRANSVERSE SEATING._* It's gonna be a living hell for people like you. That being said, I honestly don't understand why the brits love to bitch and whine about *literal commuter trains* like the 700s and 345s being "uncomfortable". They're more than enough for the routes they serve, especially if you consider that you usually ride them for around an hour, or 2 hours at max. If anything they should've had full longitudinal seating (+ folding seats) for extra standing room, _that's_ how you get extra capacity, it's a tried and tested method in countries like Japan and South Korea. And we _definitely_ don't need those amenities, if anything I'd cut it at power sockets. Just use the loo and bins at the stations instead, it doesn't hurt you. If they don't exist, go build one. Go ahead and curse me if you want, but I'm not changing my mind about Aventras being one of the best british trains. British commuter trains (and generally any public transport vehicle with a maximum journey time of around 2 hours) _really_ need to stop being so "fancy", they're not hotel rooms, for fuck's sake.

I haven't had the chance to reply so apologies for that, but my goodness I hate the whole "X has it worse so be grateful for what you're getting" argument you're making. I don't know too much about Seoul or South Korea's network, but since Commuter and Metro trains are treated as the same, it's certainly different from here. If you can handle riding trains without basic facilities on long routes, that's great! Just know that not everyone is you and that the UK is very different to South Korea. Using the 700 as an example, it runs both commuter and regional services across the South East England. They have horrible seats making them uncomfortable, no charging points outside of first class and journeys exceed an hour frequently. The full Horsham - Peterborough service can reach 3 hours. Asking for toilets, bins and USB charging points shouldn't be a big ask and when it does, I instead take my money to National Express, who give me all of those on board facilities and comfortable seats too. Also I loathe it when people say to just get off the train for those facilities. What if I'm travelling with a mate in a wheelchair from Reading to Canary Wharf and he needs to use the toilet? No guards onboard mean we can't disembark off the train without a ramp at intermediate stations since we need to tell the staff using the ramps where we're getting off beforehand. I don't mind if you love the Aventra, but if you're goal is to convince me they're good trains, I'll have to rank you a E- I'm afraid.
