My family lived in Prescott, AZ from September 1972 to July 1976. During our stay there, my father was a member of the Yavapai County Jeep Posse. I rode with him on many of the operations he assisted with in the Prescott Nation Forest during those four years. I wish we had drones then! I have completed Pilot Institute's "Part 107" course and am studying to take my FAA exam soon.

DO local search and rescue units train like this. We have had two events locally where search and rescue used multiple tools, like dogs, people and drones, and did not locate individuals, who later were found close to the areas searched. I could see this as a good example of how to train those pilots. Great Job Guys. One of my first flight when I got the Mavic Mini was to try to find lost RC plane in 7 foot tall corn. Ironically, we did find it, thanks to it being bright colored. We actually had to direct the searchers to it, as they were feet away and could not see it :)

Very cool. A competition to find a lost person. Ingenious idea. Do more of these types of videos.

This was entertaining, and interesting too, well done! 🙂. I've always thought S&R with a drone would be difficult, especially in rough and/or wooded terrain.

That is a great contest, I have looked for people and dogs. And it’s little harder than it seems. Specially, when you don’t have any clues.

Honestly why i picked up my first drone this week. Using it as a way to get a birds eye view while i hike. I used the tips you guys had in your free lesson to make sure I'm not flying in red zones. Didnt realize my applilation trail network is considered national park property! Awesome little peice of kit to throw in my rucksack and use to get my bearings outside of hand maps and compasses for when i bushwack (hike off trail).

Excellent job on producing this video! It would be useful and instructional to post in the video how far away the target was from the pilot as a reference for anyone wanting to duplicate the "contest" or in actual search and rescue, noting the the drone must be in sight of the pilot/observers. Also please give credit to the video editor and any writers and ad libbers for a great entertaining video. This could be a real "show." "Hand on your zipper!" Pretty funny stuff!

I don't always do search and rescue with my drone.. But when I do, especially when somebody's life hangs in the balance.. I will definitely use something bigger than a 6" or 7" screen to find that lost soul. Just a thought..🙂👍

Portability is a pretty big key factor for this type of operation. The smart controller with the DJI Mavic 3T can output to HDMI to a bigger screen but you lose portability during S&R if you need to move. Many agencies use the smart controller or similar size to do their job successfully. A larger screen is nice if you can have it setup at a base but it also prevents you from moving when BVLOS regulation prevents you from going further.
@mykleraymond3700 Жыл бұрын
The DJI goggles (V1 or V2) work well to present a screen that is less affected by external reflections and sunlight, when the controller provides an HDMI connection that presents the full content of the controller screen. However, the pilot needs to be fully comfortable with physical controls, to minimize needing to flip the goggles up to use the touch screen. That said, the controller (and goggles) present a relatively low-resolution image. If the personnel and equipment are available, swapping SD cards and battery(ies) at the same time allows full-resolution video to be reviewed on a large(r) screen. Reviewers are not distracted by demands on the pilot to keep the aircraft safe. Lots of detail goes unseen during flight. Now to watch the video and see which of these points have already been covered ... 😁
@PilotInstitute Жыл бұрын
VLOS is more than seeing the aircraft. It’s also about signal between the controller and the aircraft. Also remember that VLOS rules are in place because we share the airspace with other aircraft, with actual people in them, flying them, and whose lives are important too.

OK, I can accept the outcome... If Greg had won, all would think there might have been some rigging. Greg, warning from an old guy with serious back problems now, I used to run around with my wife on my back, or shoulders for photo ops. I stopped doing that in my 30s, yet doctors say that is likely why my disks are worn down. We can do things easily when young, but pay for them years later... 🙄

I was expecting more use of IR function! Cool day warm body...It would be neat to see 3 or 4 drones abreast doing a sweep search.

We thought IR would be more useful too but it was just not cold enough with the sun out.
