Thanks for the update, Jeff. I find that my freehub needs to be lightly relubed each year, as it starts squealing and spinning, similar to Osmin's issue. I'll use the brake cleaner next time for a solvent!

Thanks for your reply. Much appreciated. I will have to check it out again this weekend and see I have not missed the washer out. Noted about the panels.

This is a great instructional.. I'm hoping that my Crosstrail (2013) are the same type of hub body...mine feels gunked up. Can't find much about my rims actually.

Not sure what you are seeing with a washer. There is a special spoke tool and they are reverse thread and screw down into the rim. They do not go through the rim as they are sealed for tubeless tires. So think about them as simply screwing into the rim reverse thread.

Thank you for your reply. The hub is fine. The cassette was taken off in one go, however the large 9th cassette cog and the 6th cassette cog were all fixed together, as one complete and the 1st , 2nd and the 3rd were separated, As they were singular cogs, and then you have then the lock ring to tighten up. I did not see any spacers. If you have email I can send you the image , if you want to have a look.

Where did you buy your pawls from ,as I am looking to buy it in Uk ? Good video and I serviced my hub and cleaned , but I never checked the pawls to see if it was worn out, as I only noticed when I watched your video. The problem I have is my cassette cogs they are slightly rattling and the cassette is tightened up or is it meant to be like this. Mine are Mavic SSC Wheels.

I got the pawls at the local bike shop. There is a sticker on the rim that identifies the model number that your local bike shop can use to get you the right parts. Cassette cogs should not be rattling. You are probably missing a spacer or the cogs on the cassette are not seating properly. Take it apart and give it a good look to see why they are not seating properly.

My guess is the pawls that engage the teeth in the hub have worn to the point when they no longer engage or they are so gunked up that the spring is not pushing them to engage. Either way you need a new hub and you need to rebuild it.

Okay, except don't use Brakleen, a very strong auto brake cleaner that will damage rubber seals, o-rings, washers, tires, paint, etc. Naptha is cheap, strong enough, or White Lightning and Finish Line make spray solvents benign enough for bike seals. Also, the cassette lockring needs to be far tighter, I say 1/4-1/3 turn past the first contact with the serrations of the small cog; I've seen several instances of the cassette coming loose on rough rides, and while the cogs might not jam between the rear dropout and the spinning hub, it's not worth the risk. 40 nm is about 30 foot-pounds, so think of exerting 30 pounds on a foot long wrench - that's pretty stout.

I have a corss max hub the makes a loud sound when coasting in my low gear, would replacing those fix this?
@jpuzas
@jpuzas 2 жыл бұрын
It did for mine. The reason I did the service was that I was hearing an odd noise when coasting and it was causing the chain to slacken as well.
@MasafaHillarie
@MasafaHillarie Жыл бұрын
@@jpuzas Thanks for your video. I have the exact same problem with my Crossmax XL. Does the chain slackening present a risk of pulling the derailleur into the spokes especially when descending on rough terrain at high speeds? Or what is the worst that could happen? I usually fear for my derailleur and hanger. When I descend and it makes that odd noise, I make pedalling motions to stop it.
@jpuzas
@jpuzas Жыл бұрын
Eventually it is going to wear so much that the it will get loose and really affect the shifting negatively and the chain will start skip. I would fix it now rather than wait for additional negative symptoms. @@MasafaHillarie

Hi jpuzas, I took my cassette off and rechecked the hub, there was a washer inside the hub, as I just wanted to make sure i did put it in,as I did not missed out the washer. However the cassette slightly rattles when you try it with your finger and when you ride your bike, you can hear the rattle noise when you go over the hump. Any ideas.
@jpuzas
@jpuzas 8 жыл бұрын
You have to determine if the rattle noise is coming from hub or cassette. You seem to think it is coming from the cassette. If your cassette is rattling the only thing I can think of is that missed a spacer or something. The cassette is pretty simple. I would make sure you have all of the spaces and washers that are supposed to be there. Some cassettes come as series of chain rings that all fit together and you can slide them on one by one. Others the whole cassette is unit where the rings cannot be separated. All I can think of is to make sure you have all the washers and spacers in the correct position and the cassette is properly torqued.
