those drones use cheap motors, they are 2 wire where the DJI use 3 wire heavy duty motors ( one wire is a tach, the other 2 are for the stepper motor) you get what you pay for.

Thank you for your tip. After you correctly insert the micro-usb cable into your controller (9:09), put a white dot on the black connector body on the side facing up, with white correction fluid. That way you will always know what is the correct orientation. Also flag the cable, that is put a tab of white gaffer tape on it and mark it as you DJI charging cable and keep it with the charger and other accessories you carry. Final note: this video is much longer than it has to be. Less is more. Keep in mind for future videos. Cheers, Frederic in Montréal.

The Mavic USB port is a Micro USB-A port. Your cable is a Micro USB-B connector. Sure, you can force fit it, but as you found out, it will eventually break the port. Monoprice sells the correct cable for 92 cents. I ordered a dozen of them.
@chiupolini6 жыл бұрын
I was told by DJI that their RC Port was "USB micro AB" type so that it would accept both micro A and micro B plugs. The thing is they don't tell you that there is a fixed side you should insert it if you are using micro B plugs.
@Make-Asylums-Great-Again6 жыл бұрын
I couldn’t find any micro usb a cables on that site, do you have a link to cable?
@chiupolini6 жыл бұрын
No, the charging socket in the M2 controller is not micro A. It is micro AB. You won't find any Micro B to Micro AB adaptor in the market - not that I can find anyway. But as the cable from the charger uses micro B plug, you can buy a micro B to micro B female to female adapter. Insert the micro B charger cable into one end of the adapter. Then take the RC cable which comes with Mavic and insert the micro B plug into the other end of the adapter. Use the other end of the RC cable, which is micro AB format, to plug into the micro AB socket of the controller. Problem solved.

Thanks for confirming my experience. Just yesterday, I bought a used Mavic Pro. The only thing missing was a cable for charging the controller. At first, I was stumped because I couldn't find any micro USB cables that were rectangular.This morning, I took the controller to Best Buy and asked them if they had the appropriate cable, and when they saw the rectangular USB port on the controller, they said, "No, man. That must be a proprietary connector. You'll have to buy the cable from DJI." I went home and did more research online and learned that a standard USB micro connector would work if you put it in the right way, as you describe in your video. So I did a quick experiment with an old phone-charger cable and quickly learned it does fit, I only wished that I had seen your video earlier and saved a trip to Best Buy. And I fully support your appeal to DJI to update the port technology.

Hint: There's usually a USB icon on both ends of the cable. That icon "most always" goes up, or toward you when the USB port is vertical on a device.
@knockg72666 жыл бұрын
I cannot rely on using the USB icon as I have cables where the USB icon is on the micro-USB's "tappered" side and other cables where the USB icon in on the micro-USB's "non-tappered" side. My "cheat" is to look for the two "slide rails" on the bottom of the micro-USB connector as my guide to which side is down. Having seen this video, I now have a paint mark on the connector to indicate up.

u are so right but as someone said in a later comment, it is a micro usb "a" that is rectangle....dji ships the drone with the incorrect plug....I was charging mine with the supplied cable until it just did not feel right....if u look at the supplied android to controller plug, it is micro usb on one end and a rectangle micro usb a on the other....this is a gross oversight of the company and I'm sure it has caused a LOT of broken controllers....now I have to wait for the cable to arrive before I can fly my new drone :-(

The side jack on DJI controllers is a USB Micro A. The typical USB cord we all have laying around the house is a USB Micro B, with it's little D shape plug. While it is "possible" to force the Micro B plug into the Micro A jack, this will put stresses on the jack that will shorten it's life considerably. If you lose your DJI charging adaptor, (which is why I hate adaptors in the first place...) You can readily purchase the correct USB charging cables on Amazon.

Hi. Why, oh why, do manufacturers use this sort of connector to provide power? It's really not up to the job. Even when you get them in the right way round, and it does help if the case moulding reflects that, then they are still flimsy and fail. I've found its often the plug rather than the socket that fails. A very gentle 'crimp' with a pair of narrow nose pliers can sometimes restore connectivity. Try at your own risk! BobUK.

USB C cable would solve this issue as it can be plugged on either side. Does this make the Mavic USB cable proprietary? Most devices have the logo- still waiting for my device to arrive and I won't know until Tues. =(

Interesting video, but no offense and please dont take this the wrong way. You should really pay attention to how you plug in USB ports. You're not the only one, which is why USB-C is invented. Anyway, the control board that houses the USB port on the Mavic Pro controller can be replaced, it's just a matter of finding the replacement board on ebay. If you watch some of the video on KZbin about disassembling the controller, it's actually easier than you would imagine. I know, I've done it before and I was afraid because it's an expensive controller. But after getting over the fear, I was able to disassemble and reassemble the controller on my own.

Romeo Mesina I agree Dji logo is one top indicating micro usb correct way to plug in. But it’s not an easy one for consumers to be honest micro USB ports the worst with little thoughts into it this is why usb C design port is multi directional . Apple is ahead of the rat race here .
@StevenTheGeek5 жыл бұрын
This isn't a case of USB being plugged in the wrong way, this is DJI using a non approved socket. DJI aren't allowed to display the official USB logo if you can slot it in the wrong way. USB standards before USB-C were created for a reason too :)

If you clearly watch the remote controller it has a usb input in between of the to phone holders. So if you are going to use a different standard micro usb cable I suggest using the USB port instead of using the side connection. Doing that you will never break the side connection.

Don't even need to replace the whole circuit board. One could replace just the usb port. If all that is broken, is the little tab, then you should be able to solder on a new one.
@josheh46 жыл бұрын
I'd like to clarify, that you may or may not be able to do a replacement of the usb port, since they do seem to have a somewhat custom one. If you could, it could cost a few cents for the part. Otherwise, a board replacement for that area can be had for 16ish dollars (if you're paying 48, you're getting ripped off). The problem you have with yours, is not a 200 dollar problem. It's barely a 48 dollar problem. The only reason it should cost as much as 48, is if you're paying someone to do the fix for you.

Agreed on the micro USB rant... I just got a new Mavic Air and the drone itself has a USB C connector but the controller still has a micro USB connector. Their fix was to include a USB C to micro adapter in the box l. What a joke that turned out to be... The adapter fits loosely when plugged in and if the cable is not held just right, the controller will not charge. Sounds like I will soon be in the same situation as you, only caused by the OEM supplied accessories!

Bless your heart for sharing this! I just bought a used, but only used once Mavic Pro, and I noticed the female input on the controller was that square micro, looking one. I didn't know you could plug in the one with the beveled top edge. When I look at the little pins and stuff in either the male or female, they don't look quite like they'd match, but again, I'm old and my vision is worse. I did try doing it like you said and it seems to work. I know this from using my cell phone, it's soooooo easy to plug it in upside down, when your not looking or in a hurry. After your experience, I'm absolutely gonna pay attention to all of this. That's about par for the course that it would be so interconnected it would cost a bundle to get it replaced. You know, I'll bet, if they engineered it where they had a little harness that the female input that's on the controller was attached to inside the controller, we or they could just buy the little harness with a plug on each end and put it in ourselves. That would make more sense to me, because these little plugs take an enormous amount of use and abuse. I know my cell phone input, eventually gets very lose and thank God I have the maintenance type extended warranty on it or I'd be buying a new cell phone for about 700 bucks, all because of this cheesy little wimpy plug they have on here. it's like they haven't updated the overall platform for Mavic pro. I have the AIR and i love it. The fly more kit, The controller, storage in the bag. very nice configuration. I just got the Mavic Pro 2 and it seems like its last generation ideas. The bag isn't big enough for the drone let alone batteries, chargers, accessories, ETC. Now onto the controller. I had to sit down and Google how to charge because that wasn't clear straight out of the box. Looking at the port for the first time i was like "this is gonna be trouble" then i find your video AND thank god you put this video out. This should be pinned on their website so people can be cautious. I have now subscribed to your channel because i have seen 7 videos and liked all of them so far!

you can purchase a magnetic micro USB cable. This allows you to insert a tiny adapter in the micro USB port AND LEAVE IT THERE. Then the cable attaches magnetically to the tiny adapter. You can find the on Amazon/eBay for about 5 bucks :)

Yep. Did that. Made a video about it. ;-)

I’ve used 3 different brands of micro USB cables for the Mavic 2 remote, but each cable causes a little more damage to the port each time I insert the cable - even though I do it correctly! It seems as if the only way the remote’s port doesn’t sustain any damage is by using the DJI supplied micro USB cable and the included micro USB cable on the power adapter. I don’t know why this is, but I can only use the DJI cables for that port. So much for charging it with after-market cables on the Fstop Labs Mavic 2 Battery Charger ...

Thank you Russ. Got my Mavic Pro yesterday and was initially concerned that I wasn’t in possession of the correct DJI remote charge lead. Your video is a great heads up.

The first time that I charged my MP controller, I did the same thing. Tried to plug it in upside down. Went and got my paint pen and put a yellow stripe on the top side. Never had that problem again. Easy fix.

Great video and helpful. I have an unrelated question for you. I had a flyaway up into the forests of Oregon with my first Mavic Pro. Hunted for a month with no luck. I did purchase another Mavic Pro and after four months a hiker found my first drone. I had my name and phone number on my FAA registration card under the battery and the guy called me. Wow Got it home battery is toast so put in a new battery and the props did their jerky move, the gimble did it's gyration and the lights front and back flashed on. By the way, it had rained several times on the drone in the woods.. Nothing more but the same happening each time I restart it. I have talked with a DJI repair in San Francisco and was told the board is probably toast and repair is out of the question? I now have a expensive boat anchor.LOL Is there any value here other than external parts?

Monte Arehart Oh man! That sucks. I would think someone has the ability to fix it, but I don't think the cost would be worth it. I would call that Canadian company in the description and ask. Worth a try I guess.

I will call the Canadians "A" but have come to realize my wayward Mavic will probably hang from my office ceiling like I did with my model airplanes as a kid.

Great tip that would easily be overlooked. I've had my Mavic Pro in the box unopened for a year, and it's time to get flying. QUESTION: Before I invest in a holder for my old large iPad, does the pad work very well compared to the iPhone X? I need reading glasses for the phone.

Lucky I come across this, thanks for tip mate, I didn't even realized, I've made this mistake a few times, I think I will mark the top of my USB connection so I remember, thanks alot mate, all the way down from Australia. Keep the tips coming, I'm a new first time owner of a mavic pro platinum, great little drone but for the price you would think it would record sound, I bought the drone for fishing but also when we go away, I love to record videos of our holidays, is there anyway we can get it to record sound or maybe possible fit another camera that can record sound on the mavic? Cheere mate.
@51Drones6 жыл бұрын
No, unfortunately not. The propellers are too loud anyway. I would assume that someday a "silent" drone would be developed that would allow for recording audio.

Yes, when I first heard about this issue I took my plug and a sharpie marker and marked the up side. That way I’m always looking at the marked side as I’m plugging it in. And a big YES to your statement to DJI... they can do better!!

I would like to see a link to the repair facility you mentioned. You mentioned a link to the good repair place you found in Canada, but I did not see that link.

51 Drones WOW! Thank you for replying. I don’t respond very often to anything, but you sure impressed me with your quick response. I am a subscriber, and have always enjoyed your informative video posts. Many of them I have saved to watch again. I have enjoyed r/c flying for many years, but am fairly new to drones. One of my regrets is that I wish I had discovered your site before I bought my Mavic Pro Platinum. Another regret is that, living in Michigan and dealing with ever changing weather conditions, I have not been able to fly as much as I would like. I hope I will never need this repair link, but it is refreshing to know it is available. Thanks again, and please continue your great work. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Great discussion. I am from Hong Kong. Just got my Mavic 2 Pro yesterday. My first Mavic. I ran into the same problem. I found that RC port is rectangular. But except for the RC cables, I do not find any charging cable which has a rectangular plug. Even the charging cable attached to the DJI charger is USB micro B type. So I went up to the DJI Support at Facebook. There, after much explanation including video and photos, the guy told me that USB micro B could be inserted into the RC part direct and told me not to doubt him. However he did not tell me that there were two sides to the RC port and that I should insert the USB micro B plug with the tapered side facing up. Emboldened by his "guidance", I confidently pressed the USB plug in hard and found no response. Today I went to the Hong Kong DJI Store and they found the RC Port was damaged by me!!!!! After I leveled a barrage at them about what I was told yesterdya by their Support, they took the controller in and now certify that I can get a brand new replacement controller for the "repair costs" of HK$356, or USD45.64. I paid under protest, but will try to get me a complete refund for giving me misleading information. DJI should have informed everyone about how people should properly plug in their USB micro B plug into the RC port for charging. But this is not in the manual or any tutorial video. I think you got a raw deal there. We all do.
Definitely good info I just grabbed a micro usb and plug it in so I have to check and be more careful with that thanks for your great videos 👍👍👍

Awesome tip on the micro USB side port. I put bright orange tape on the correct sides to connect together. Top of Controller plug and top of power cord plug. No mistake to be made ,easy and fast connection now. Set it and forget it. LOL Glad you gave me the idea. Thanks keep them coming.
