I am watching the "Maid" series and heard this song in the last episode. I had to find this song, and I was pleasantly surprised that a Staple sings it. The Staple singers are a legend and they were one of my favorite groups.

I cried while watching it because it took me back to my abusive situations as a child, watching my mother being abused, my abusive marriage, and my best friend's abusive marriage. In some instances, I saw myself in her. In other episodes, I saw my mother and my best friend. This series may be fictional, but it is very real to a plethora of people in this world, some of whom I personally know. When I look back, I thank GOD for bringing me out of that hell. I feel like HE was always with me because I kept having Dreams that came true and eventually set me free.

@@GailBecker-MSED-CM-Author The relationship she had with her partner reminded me of my twin sisters last relationship. It never got as far as physical abuse, thankfully, but he was a total no hoper. He justified his bad behavior by saying that ''he had a job''. He worked nights and came home, and started drinking in the morning when he got home. My sister was working full time with her first child, plus she was doing advanced academic home-school work to gain further qualifications. The only way she could continue to do that, was to study on the weekends - but he refused to be a child minder (a normal dad) on the weekends - that was HIS time to be in the pub with his friends. So she was left alone in the apartment on the weekends, looking after her kid, after her week of work, plus trying to catch up on study at the same time. And eventually it got too much, and she had to abandon her studies and give up that career goal. That was a few years ago now, he is barely in the picture anymore, and my sister is now working again towards her career. But that whole second half of the show really got to me. I am glad you were able to escape it as well.

@@SeekTheWild85 Thank you for sharing your sister's experience with emotional and mental abuse. Most victims don't have a clue that emotional, mental, and verbal abuse exist. They think abuse has to be physical as it was in the past, which the movie series mentioned. So, they stay until it leads to physical abuse or worse, even death. Your sister's situation could be a good example for someone who is going through it too. Your sister was a strong determined woman who rechanneled her abusive situation into an academic situation as knowledge is definitely very powerful. My mother and I did the same thing. I remembered my mother working and going to school while pregnant through her abuse. My mother was my example: her job, going back to college, going to medical school, and her wealthy father who sent her money also helped her. WOW! It is so ironic how we are all in this together! Your sister reminds me of when I returned to college too through my pregnancy, having to take a break from my job after a drunk driver hit me, creating a home business (I wanted my own money), caring for my premature baby after a C section that saved her life. Then going through a separation for three years then a divorce. I left the same way the star in the "Maid" did. However, my husband still harassed, stalked, and threatened me. He and his brother kidnapped our daughter from school and tried leave the country. When my ex-husband could not get a passport for our daughter because I had custody, and he needed my permission and my signature on that passport, they went into hiding with our daughter. My ex-husband, his family, his attorney, my own sister, and the Guardian ad Litem tried to break me, but GOD kept me sane and strong. HE reminded me of how my mother remained humble and peaceful as she worked, studied, gave birth to six babies while still being emotionally, mentally, physically, and verbally abused. Moreover, other successful women who told their stories of their abusive situations also helped me too. I used something of each story to plan my escape.
