This exactly, if you omit all the weird pre-toss stuff on the serve and the odd forehand takeback you can see he gets in the trophy position on the serve and has good rotation and wrist lag on the forehand. It does make you wonder though how he developed some of those unusual characteristics, particularly the serve ritual. But hey he made it to D1 so it's obviously working for him :)
@cozyslor
@cozyslor 2 ай бұрын
@@DNAdad925 The better the competition, the more efficient your strokes need to be. The question isn't "does he hit the ball in the proper position", the question is "how long does it take him to get into position". The better your competition, the faster you need to prepare your shot. This has nothing to do with his serve where that doesn't matter (although it seems like a waste of energy).

@@cozyslor Agree 100%. The very high FH takeback isn't going to work the higher up he goes. I was just agreeing with the other poster that despite how odd it looks, by the time he actually makes contact with the ball it's pretty sound in general.

@connorpen 2 ай бұрын
@@cozyslorto be fair his forehand takeback is pretty similar to Karen khachanov, I don’t think it’s the biggest limiting factor for him. In fact if he’s already playing top d1, the competition honestly doesn’t seem to get a whole lot quicker. Just more consistent all around

@@mskcrcHis forehand is literally garbage. American college kids just don't have the game strategy yet to exploit it.

As a rec player who has trouble with all aspects of the serve, it's good to see skilled players struggle too. Women's #1 Iga Swiatek recently re-tooled her serve and she really needs to do it again. Many men and women on the pro tour are still working on their serves. In addition to the toss, you have to find the right rhythm and timing while trying to maximize racquet head speed. I imagine he tried a lot of motions to get there and found this worked for him for some reason.

I wonder if he does the whole routine when he is just practicing/warming up his serve.

He wastes so much energy with this circus show. He needs to massively economize his motions and strokes if he wants to advance. His backhand slice will get murdered at any higher levels.

I annotate tennis matches for Cizr, and I did a match with Vlad vs Klopper (a Vanderbilt stud) a few months ago. Vlad is unbeatable. He's a human backboard. At first, I thought his serve was just to freak out his opponents, but it's not. He is self-taught. I think Romanian. Anyway, he's really good. He destroyed Klopper and I can't imagine many collegiate players beating him because of his returns. He has the most bizarre serve in tennis for sure. And the rest of his game is quirky too.

Green guy shows that pure talent isn't what makes you a viable competitor. But hard work, regardless of what you actually work hard at, will get you somewhere. That somewhere may be losing 1 and 4 to someone who worked just as hard and has actual talent and an eye for at least some efficiency, but hey, at least you got on the court with that guy.
