I've always thought the Bruch symphonies were underestimated. I find the thematic material striking in each of them, but none moreso than in this one.

Bruch is to Brahms what Glazounov is to Tchaïkovsky: a master with multiple talents, but somehow less inspiration and genius wind.

The difference is that when Glazunov began, Tchaikovsky was very much present in Russia; whereas Bruch was already a well-known composer before Brahms even began. Different period, different idiom, and not the same relationship at all. Personally, I find Bruch's music more accessible than Brahms's, easier to get into. It's very different music in that regard.

@Pierre Boland Bruch seems to me closely related to Robert Schumann's symphonies and Manfred Overture.
