Editor's note: Apologies for the Zoom camera confusion at the beginning of this recording! This is (mostly) sorted out approximately eight minutes into the video, when Max's screen share eventually defaults into view.
In this talk (given on March 22, 2021) Max Liboiron discusses “Colonialism and 'Citizen' Science.” Max is Associate Professor of Geography and Director of Civic Laboratory for Environmental Action Research (CLEAR) at Memorial University, Newfoundland.
Max’s talk is presented as part of the Center's series on "Models for Equitable Minority Inclusion in Institutional Research," in which we explore this intersection with an aim of understanding how community participation can be made more equitable and just. Because citizen science work often operates outside of institutional channels, it often faces difficulties when it intersects with institutional structures, often disproportionately hurting minoritized communities and those not traditionally served by academic and institutional research models.
Series speakers:
Spring 2021: Omega Wilson, Pepijn Al, Nikita Shiel-Rolle, & Max Liboiron
Fall 2020: Angelique Harding & Alex Pearlman
