"Last night I dreamed of my wife. She was still dead, but it was alright", and then "Late Goodbye" from Poets of the Fall started playing....absolutely masterful way to end such a game. This game was a masterpiece.

I remember when I grinded Max Payne 2 until I found the alternate ending. I agree it defeats the story's purpose. However. On the first playthrough you're just shocked about the ending. On the second play-through you feel really sad whenever Mona shows up because you know how it ends. The third time you play because its the hardest difficulty and completionist in you cannot pass the challenge. After beating it I at least felt genuine joy that I got to see Mona surviving. I still feel it was a clever reward to those who really played the game a lot.

Did I do something wrong by tinkering with the registry of the game and enabling Dead on Arrival without playing the others first? I didn't had the time to play it again and again as I was in a somewhat dark and hectic time of my life as well. I don't think so. Coz I wouldn't have been able to bear Mona's death in the easy playthrough. I actually felt a sense of connection with Mona herself. In the Manor at the end, I tried to follow her, worried something might happen to her in my absence, ignoring the bullets headed towards me. I am in love. With Max, with Mona.

I think one thing I like so much about Max Payne's character is that he should have died so many times, even wants to die at times, but there is something driving him that just will not let him. Sort of like a boxer that's been beaten to a pulp, but just will not stop getting up again and again. The bandaged, bloody state he's in at the end of Max Payne 2 says it all.

As a kid that replayed Max Payne 2 over twenty times on my cousin's PC in 2004 I agree with this video and its entirety. Despite not experiencing Max Payne 1 before playing its sequel; I could still feel and sense the dark and rich tone this game had. I love it and still see it as one of the best noir style games of all time. As for Max Payne 1, I love its origin and wilder aspects for comparison as well. However, Max Payne 2 has something I still hold to this day; both are fantastic titles and truly worthy of Remedy's best products.

There was a quote towards the end of this video that gave me chills when I heard it: "From the opening cutscene, The Fall of Max Payne is about the past. How running from it only allows it to consume you and that the only true way to overcome it, is to confront it; to risk the damage and madness that comes from facing it until you're truly set free." The reason being is this is also a perfect summary of Cowboy Bebop, possibly my favorite TV show ever. I played the first two Max Payne games for the first time recently and loved them both but especially The Fall of Max Payne, now it makes perfect sense to me why I like the story so much, so thanks for that.

One of my favourite games of all time! Love the analysis. I agree 2 is not so difficult, unless you play on "dead on arrival", but i prefer it to 1 in every single way. The music, the setting, the desperation, falling down in to the rabbit hole, refine gameplay, etc.. I never played 3, but i know i will not like it as much as 1 and 2. There some interviews given by Remedy hints that they don't like the direction of 3 or at least sounds like that. I wish i'm that well spoken :D My favourite quote from the game: "Max, dearest of all my friends. I was supposed to be the hero". The last words of Vlad.

not really, MP3 is considered to be a worthy sequel by remedy afaik, Sam Lake is on board for helping the Houser's make the story. but i get your point. MP3 doesn't feels like a Max Payne game, it feels like a generic TPS with Max in it

Max Payne 2 is one of my top 10 games of all time. The story, the gameplay, the feeling I get when I play that game...just nothing like it. By the way, is there a chance you could do one video for Operation Flashpoint? Also a game from my childhood and my country. Grew up with all the cool characters, enjoyed the grim reality of cold war combat and never managed to get how the hell to properly use the AI controls.

This is my favorite MP title, and I thank you for the justice you brought to it in this video. While most people I know despise MP2 for the story, I absolutely adored it and was completely immersed by act 3, losing an entire night until I completed the game. Just like in the game, it was raining outside and once "Late Goodbye" kicked in, I couldn't hold back the tears streaking my face. It was exhilarating ride, and a far more personal story than I ever thought I would get. I agree 100% on "Duty VS Passion" being the best track on the score; so much is conveyed in that track that cannot be explained unless you're actually playing the game. Great review!

People despise MP2 for the story? For real? I have trouble wrapping my head around it, tbh. This game has (for me) the most emotionally impactful plot of all videogames that I played, it even helped me discover the film noir genre, so to this day I watch and re-watch every noir or ne-noir style film from 1940s onward to get that almost cathartic set of emotions MP2 once provided for me.

Same here. There used to be a time that I would make it a tradition to re-install MP2 every Thanksgiving Day weekend and play the game again. 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, and it must have tapered off sometime after that. I would, however, say my favorite track is the one that you here when Max is going down the elevator and finds Winterson arresting Mona. The few seconds in the beginning convey an unnerving, palpable build-up and tension.

The game hooked me, dragged me into it's world. Max Payne 1 was a single piece of bait put on a hook and line. Max Payne 2 was bigger bait, and more hooks. Both times I took the bait. both times I couldn't stop until the playthrough was done. And now all that's left is Max Payne 3. It's kinda funny, how the lineup room only has slots for 3 people. As if it was fated Max Payne would have a trilogy.

I love the MP games so much. I used to have a saved game in MP2 (or 1, I can't remember) where a bunch of Bad Guys are climbing a stairwell. I would bullet time down those steps guns blazing and it was just pure violent beauty. What's best is that due to the physics engine, debris would fall in random patterns, or the bad guys might react in a different way, so every scene on those steps would play out slightly differently, every time.

I talked to Sam Lake in a christmas party last year and tried to drunkenly grill him on the subject of Max Payne 3's writing, and surprisingly enough he did give some solid answers. He refused to comment on the quality of Houser's writing of the game's story, but he did give me a startling revelation that demonstrated Rockstar's ignorance of the game's style and theme in regards to storytelling. According to Sam, Houser and the rest of the writing team behind Max Payne 3 had *entirely* *forgotten* *Max's* *inner* *monologue.* Rockstar actually got Sam to fill in the blanks they left with genuine Max monologue in appropriate scenes. Without his involvement, it would have been an entirely different type of narrative, and I doubt the players could have related as well to Max without being able to read his thoughts.

I hated the clown bomb mission, but the rest was pure gold. Sadly with the 3rd one, they completely took out the "caught off guard" feature, where you can sneak around and surprise unexpected enemies. The 3rd one had cutscenes every time you opened a door - that was annoying.

I remember the alternate ending vividly, and was appreciative of it- it felt like waking up. I believe you had to beat the game before you could do the higher difficulty, so you had already experienced the tragedy, and having your anticipation subverted was welcome when you were primed for unremitting loss.
