This is probably my favorite game in the series overall. I would say the first game had the better story mainly because Max wasn't as plot armoured, but the story in this also pretty good and has an amazing ending. The gameplay in this game is a lot better because you actually get to use the bullet time more instead of just hiding into cover and then shoot dodge.

Max Payne 1 had the atmosphere, Max Payne 2 had the gameplay, Max Payne 3 had the gameplay and the graphics. BUT! Max Payne 3 was an okay game, but not exactly a great sequel. It was made entirely by Rockstar to let Remedy focus on Alan Wake, hence why the story was not as great. From a very noir story that Sam Lake, the writer on Max Payne, specialises in, Rockstar made a rambo out of Max Payne, which didnt feel that good. But overall it was not a bad game. However, if there will be another MP game at any time, I hope Sam Lake will be behind it.

Max Payne 2 was probably the only game I played where the romantic sub plot actually touched me. I emphasized a lot with Max and how sad he was and how the shooting rampage was basically an outlet for all of his frustrations, but then Mona Sax came along and they both comforted each other and I actually sighed in relief when they were together. My biggest gripe with Max Payne 3 was how that entire meaningful Mona Sax sub plot was tossed aside with a single line. It genuinely made me mad.

This review is insanity xD ! This is the best Max Payne game ever made. It has one of the best storylines of any videogame ever written, and it has ALL the qualities of the first's gameplay. It's not as short as it's made out to be, as the first one is around 8 - 10 hours whereas the second one is 5 - 7 hours. If it seems now like Max Payne "has a superpower" it's because it helps with the balancing issues that the first one had in it's difficulty. You won't be dying a million times trying to get over one scene, and neither will enemies have poor animations that interrupting you from killing them.

EDIT: Also, first time around for both games, MP1 took me about 6 hours while 2 took me around 4.1 is probably closer to 5 and 2 closer to 3 as I spent a considerable amount of time dicking around in the cinematics, and for 1, the training area.

Loved Max Payne 2, but there was one thing that I really got hung up about: bullets being visible and way too slow even when you didn't use bullet time. It just looked so silly when you aimed the MP5 and got a first person view, and you could see the back ends of the bullets being sprayed out in normal time. I get why the game mechanics might require that bullets move slower than in real life to not make the game too hard, but would it have killed the developers to simply turn off the visibility of the bullets 3d models or make them transparent or something when you didn't have bullet time activated? It would've made the shooting a little less immersionbreaking for someone with real life experience in handling firearms.
@lowlifestyle9 жыл бұрын
Tbh I prefer the original. Max Payne 2 undoubtedly improved the bullet time mechanics but the first game had better level design and more memorable set pieces. Not to mention that while MP1's weapon roster was smaller, each weapon was distinct whereas most of the new guns in MP2 functioned the same way that the older guns did but used different ammo types, which made most of them redundant.

I'll be completely honest, and I don't know who feels the same way because I feel like I'm alone here, but, Max Payne 3 is my favorite of the trilogy and I feel like Rockstar really put their all into it. Now mind that the first two games were a generation behind the third installment but I feel like, looking at all three games retrospectively, and from their respective time periods with absolutely no bias to the quality of games now, that Max Payne 3 had the most care and passion put into it. sure the graphic novel cutscenes were absent but I honestly really enjoyed the filters over these new sequences, although it did take a while for me to adjust... I just feel like the way his character was carried, the way he evolved, his insights, growth, and departure were really romanticized with these effects. I mean the guy was so fucked up half the time, it was really like living in his mind with those filters juxtaposed with the narratives themed with his morality.

I had no idea the bullet time worked differently in this one. I don't think I ever saw that spinning reload animation either. Guess it's time to play them all again.

Will you ever take a look at Remedy's other series, Alan Wake?

+CluelessDetective Not sure.

Gggmanlives Trust me, Alan Wake is really good and the light mechanic is interesting. Poets of the Fall, the guys who did Late Goodbye, make a return. Amercican Nightmare is okay but not nearly as enjoyable as the original

Max Payne 3 is a brilliant send-off for the character and a masterpiece in storytelling in games. But, to each their own.

MP1 has a dedicated bullet time button as well, you just needed to be careful not to press it while standing still

I have to imagine the bullet time changes where made because of the matrix. When the first Max Payne started development the matrix may not have been out yet or not out long enough to endear the game creators to it. So the action is more John Woo: the hero is just really good with a gun. But with the 360 instant reload camera that looks like a few shots from the matrix and the superhuman bullet time the hero is more Neo than Hard Boiled. This game also came out after "Enter the Matrix," where you're definitely super powered.

+Penn Tarleton MP2 only came out a few months after Enter the Matrix, which wasn't particularly well received by anybody, so I really doubt they had the time nor the want to mimic stuff from Enter the Matrix...

Really like your reviews, can't wait for MP3. Beaten the original tons of times, only played through MP2 twice. Playing through MP3 for a second time.

As much as I like the first Max Payne, for me, the second game cuts the cake. Maybe it's because I played Max Payne 2 prior to first one, but man I loves that gunplay, and man, the ludicrous it gets, the more I like it :). Sometimes, I just play some parts just to see that unrealistically flying bodies just for shit and giggles. First game is great noir game with great gunplay, third game has great narrative and awesome gameplay and physics thanks to the Euphoria Physics, and I honestly like the decision to be able carry only few weapons, as it adds to semi-realistic nature of the game. But the second game just cuts it. And I played through all of them like five time each... MP2 like ten times ;).

I have to disagree with the second one being a better story than the first, I really didn't like the second games story at all it wasn't like the first one where its all dark and Max is alone. I absolutely hated the love interest part of the story and it really isn't a good story. The third games story is really good but the 1st one is the best game out of the series

AnthologyProductions The story in 2 is far better. Insteaf of mimicking the style and feeling of noir films and books it became it's own that stood out amongst them. 2 had many different layers of story, the characters were much deeper and relatable. The overall quality of the storytelling and writing were noticeably much better. The first game is a guy is mad his family died and get framed, so he goes and kills people until he kills the right people and then his name is cleared. 2 is about the man, about his tragedy and the psychological effects the events in his life have taken him and how bitter and cynical he became. It's a tragic love story and genuine crime mystery as well as a psychological thriller as we delve into Max's mind. I never understood how anyone could think the overly simplistic and ultimately forgettable story of the first superseded the second in any way.

I would have liked the 2nd game's story if it was not titled Max Payne. The developments in this game doesn't make that much sense to me. One of my biggest gripe is that Max is now so madly in love with Mona Sax, the woman who's nearly responsible for his death, to the point that he's willing to hide evidences for her sake and not to mention, creep around in her room like some stalker. That said, Max and Mona's love story made sense to me when I played Max Payne 2 by itself but after I played 1, it suddenly looks really jarring.

I prefere the noir atmosphere of Max Payne 1 and the way he dodge bullet was more challenging, you needed to take cover and dodge out of cover. Enemy was more Cannon fodder in 2. I hated the final boss and the section when you needed to protect the big head guy in max payne 2, in the other hand the ending level of max payne 1 was amazing, taking over the high protected building all by yourself was one of the most BadAss moment I got in a video game. All the engine physic and visual stuff was better in 2 tho.
