@@Derek_The_Magnificent_Bastard I know perfectly well what noir is im a fanatic on the genre and have seen some 500+ films and still going that aside though max payne 3 still isn't a noir, it's just an action film game where as 1 and 2 wear their influences with pride from the cynicism to the flawed characters, the tragedy, the femme fatales (aesir ceo in 1 mona in 2) and so on, i think the term gets thrown around loosely these days to put it mildly.
@Derek_The_Magnificent_Bastard2 жыл бұрын
@@ciaranperry4677 There isn't always a femme fatale in noir stories. But a gritty investigator is common. Plus you have Max's narration which is noir-esque. I personally think it does classify as noir and I would be curious which 500 films you think are noir because I doubt there are that many unless you are including some really obscure ones or neo-noir. I've been a hard core fan of the genre for decades and probably own half of the classic noir films from Maltese Falcon to Touch of Evil which roughly covers the time period of 1941 - 1958 of the classic noir. Max Payne is noir through and through. Don't let the action of the game fog your judgement. The essence of the story is noir or rather neo-noir.

Nothing but pain and misery so it makes he'd want to get as far the hell away from that place as he can, lucratively. Also, what we're they gonna do with noir setting? And TBF there are intractables in MP1 and 2 were you get mini cutscenes that change the flow quite a bit

Great job. I couldn't agree more with every aspect of your review. The mechanics and technical aspects of the game were A+ amazing, with the only real downside being the incessant cutscenes. It really drove me crazy when I first played it because the game play is just soooooo good and smooth. Cutscenes seem to be a hallmark of modern AAA titles and even when they're good I can't help but think: "get your movie out of my game." What happened to the Doom model of starting the action within the first 3 seconds of booting the game up?

three weapons at a time is new for the series, but you have to appreciate the level of detail there. You can have a pistol out and Max will hold the big weapon in his other hand and then in the cutscene he will actually place that weapon somewhere (like on the table or against the wall). Like you don't have a limit of three weapons because of gameplay, you have this limit because it's what he can hold on him. That level of attention to details in what's basically a test for a GTA V engine is insane. PS. weird note - it's the first review without the gratuitous "shiiit" I've seen from this channel. Did I miss it? Need to watch again.

Max Payne 1 : 10/10 Max Payne 2 : 9.5/10 Max Payne 3 : 9/10 For modern adaptation of a classic legend, MP 3 is a near masterpiece since most modern versions of old games get ruined by "modern" mechanics stuff while MP3 "mostly" keeps all the formulas intact. In my view, Max Payne 3 is undisputedly the best game in the series, but it wasn't my favorite one. That honor belongs to the first game. I firmly believe the decision to deviate from the film-noir style of the first two games was necessary for the success of number three. However, I really missed that style and for that reason, Max Payne 3 just didn't grip me as much.

Much of the cinematics are going during the load screens between levels, which brilliantly maintains the pacing of the story in my opinion. Otherwise many of the mid session cutscenes can be skipped from what I can tell. But yes it is quite frequent.

I love the first two Max Payne games, but any desire I had to play the third game was killed by the first gameplay video I watched. A couple minutes of gameplay and then five minutes of unskippable cutscene! The in-level cutscenes in games like Jedi Academy and Elite Force II drove me crazy. There's no way I'd be able to play a game like MP3 without wanting to put my fist through the screen. What the fuck is wrong with game developers today? It's like their gaming experience goes back all of six months. Did they even look at the previous games? Did they think "Yeah, the old games were really good, but let's flush all that down the toilet and force our own crappy ideas on players instead!"?
@Cj-xt6tv3 жыл бұрын
You’d want to skip cutscenes on your first way through?
@lurkerrekrul3 жыл бұрын
@@Cj-xt6tv Not usually, but if the cutscenes end up being a mini-movie all on their own that goes on for more than a couple minutes, I get impatient to get back to the game. Frankly, I hate in-level cutscenes. They break up the flow of the game and destroy your sense of immersion. And in almost every case, it would be much cooler to experience whatever is happening from the viewpoint of your character rather than just watching an FMV play. In my opinion, loading an FPS game with tons of FMVs, especially in the middle of levels, is just a lazy way to try and extend the playing time. And if I'm playing that part of the game for the second time, those cutscenes better be skippable. Forcing users to sit through an FMV that they've already seen is really poor game design, especially in today's games, that usually don't have save anywhere and instead force you to rely on checkpoints. Which is another thing I despise. Just saying.

@gggmanlives - I personally believe you are mistaking the purpose of the long cinematics. I agree that they are too long and negatively affect the replayability, but the reason they kept them was to try and conceal the fact that the loading times for the levels are horrendous. It's true that many cutscenes are skippable, but the game doesn't load the rest of the game quick enough to skip them immediately which i can get annoying, but not game breaking. Positives outweigh the negatives for me and the ending is really satisfying. Also that soundtrack, man.

Definitely my least favorite of the three. The game play just seems so limited. You can't jump unless it is to hurdle over something, you can't throw grenades or moltov cocktail, and the playing area between cut scenes is small, but even within those small areas doors will close and lock behind you on the their own, further segmenting the playing areas.

It's a good game, but a Max Payne game only in name. There's no noir, only a superficial link to Max's backstory. Rockstar nailed the gameplay, but it's more of a Battlefield Hardline-type plot than a Max Payne story. Compared to the dark, occult tones of the original, with secret societies, and sheer style of Max Payne 2, this one is just much more straightforward. Rockstar makes great AAA games with production values. The magic of the Max Payne lies elsewhere, in unique characters like Max himself, in Mona, or Mike the Cowboy or Jack Lupino. At least they got the voice actor from Fall of Max Payne.

Nick Hunter Remove the voice actor and bullet time and I'd never have guessed in a gazillion years I was playing a Payne game. Comic art cutscenes - gone, harsh unforgiving sterile environments usually caught up in the middle of storms - gone, great dialogue - gone, interesting characters - gone, a game that doesn't take itself too seriously - gone, noire - gone. This was your typical GTA stuff - shallow, vain characters, some morbid moments, a few whores, profanities. Good shooter? Yes. Max Payne? No.

Some quotes from the previous games The gilding on the mask had cracked to reveal the rot underneath. Fraternizing with the enemy. I had stepped over the edge. The cartoon moment when the gravity waits for the coyote to realize his mistake before the plunge. The past is a puzzle, like a broken mirror. As you piece it together, you cut yourself, your image keeps shifting. And you change with it. It could destroy you, drive you mad. It could set you free. Death is inevitable. Our fear of it makes us play safe, blocks out emotion. It's a losing game. Without passion you are already dead. The genius of the hole: no matter how long you spend climbing out, you can still fall back down in an instant. 1+2's writing are far better than 3. 3 is a disaster.

I've grown tired of most shooters having enemies that do not flinch when shot unless they are shot in key pixel in their head. It might make more sense when the enemies are zombies. But seeing humans get shot in the neck, heart, or even their legs and then react like a mosquito bit them, is ridiculous. Max Payne games have only emphasized this silliness.
@DiegoAlanTorres969 жыл бұрын
But why bother animating all that stuff if you can just shoot them in the head? Soldier of Fortune bothered, for example.
@Curt_Randall9 жыл бұрын
A better question is why do they bother rendering entire enemy bodies? May as well just show a bunch of enemy human head targets floating around the screen waiting to be shot. What? But that's not realistic you might say? Is it realistic for an enemy to get shot in the legs with several bullets and not fall down or even stop running? Basically I was just saying after killing 1000's of enemies, it would be nice to see something different the way an enemy can be shot and killed.
