Max Payne 3 is a third-person shooter video game developed by Rockstar Studios and published by Rockstar Games. It was released on 15 May 2012 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360; a Microsoft Windows port was released on 31 May 2012, followed by an OS X port on 20 June 2013. The game is the first entry in the Max Payne series since 2003's Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne, developed by Remedy Entertainment.
The game is played from a third-person perspective. Throughout the single-player mode, players control Max Payne, a former detective who has become a vigilante after the murder of his wife and daughter. Nine years after the events of the second game, Max becomes employed as a private security contractor in Brazil, but quickly becomes entangled in a quest filled with death and betrayal. An online multiplayer mode is included with the game, allowing up to 16 players to engage in both cooperative and competitive gameplay in re-creations of multiple single-player settings.
As part of their research for the game's setting, the developers conducted field research around São Paulo throughout development and captured footage for the design team. Development duties were shared between many of Rockstar's studios worldwide. At release, it was acclaimed by many reviewers, with praise particularly directed at the story and action. Max Payne 3 received high sales, shipping approximately three million units in the first week of release. It was nominated for multiple year-end accolades from several gaming publications, winning a variety of them.

I have to say that Max Payne 3 has some of the best visual feedback I've seen in a game. Just the fact that every shot bullet is a detailed polygon model is just fascinating.

SkyOut Max Payne 3 is not better gameplay wise. It became a fucking cover based shooter, you can only have three weapons at a time, constant interruptions destroying the flow of the game and so on.

I know it's not the classic film noir comic book style, but Max Payne 3 is STILL noir - it's basically Man On Fire : The Game. It takes a lot of the visual and thematic cues on modern neo-noir films.

@@ciaranperry4677 Noir usually centers around a dark theme where either greed or lust motivates perpetrators to do criminal acts for personal gain. Usually there is a law enforcer mixed up in it trying to make it right or sometimes they get mixed up in it themselves. The Max Payne series you could even call it quintessential noir. It checks all the boxes.

@@Derek_The_Magnificent_Bastard I know perfectly well what noir is im a fanatic on the genre and have seen some 500+ films and still going that aside though max payne 3 still isn't a noir, it's just an action film game where as 1 and 2 wear their influences with pride from the cynicism to the flawed characters, the tragedy, the femme fatales (aesir ceo in 1 mona in 2) and so on, i think the term gets thrown around loosely these days to put it mildly.
@Derek_The_Magnificent_Bastard
@Derek_The_Magnificent_Bastard 2 жыл бұрын
@@ciaranperry4677 There isn't always a femme fatale in noir stories. But a gritty investigator is common. Plus you have Max's narration which is noir-esque. I personally think it does classify as noir and I would be curious which 500 films you think are noir because I doubt there are that many unless you are including some really obscure ones or neo-noir. I've been a hard core fan of the genre for decades and probably own half of the classic noir films from Maltese Falcon to Touch of Evil which roughly covers the time period of 1941 - 1958 of the classic noir. Max Payne is noir through and through. Don't let the action of the game fog your judgement. The essence of the story is noir or rather neo-noir.

This game also includes one of the best lines and narration spoken by a main character in a video game. "It aint often you get nostalgic for getting your ass kicked by 6 sailors on leave." "The guy was smoother than a oil slick on an iceberg, and about as toxic" “I’d been sitting at the bar for three hours, or five years depending on the way you looked at things. With what you said about the Brancos being unlikable, I thought it contrasted really well with Max and helped give him depth in that he was going out of his way to try and help people that he didn't like. (SPOILERS) Even after his employer and the girl he was trying to save died, he kept trucking on regardless of how life threatening it was to continue. He had no stakes in being there anymore and could have left Sao Paulo at any time, but he didn't. Also, for a first in the series (outside of the secret ending for MP2) he finally saves a woman.

This one is actually my favorite in the series. Even though I do agree the cinematic were a little too much at times, I found 99% of the cutscenes to be extremely fluid and well made. I know a lot of people hate on my opinion because this one takes Max Payne out of the neo-noir setting, but ask yourself this. What's left for Max in New York/New Jersey? Nothing. Nothing but pain and misery so it makes he'd want to get as far the hell away from that place as he can, lucratively. Also, what we're they gonna do with noir setting? More mafia and New York scumbags? C'mon, it was an excellent change up in the series rather than just the same old shit.

Like what the fuck it's literaly about Max, if we did so to previous games we get 80-90s cop drama, or at best Sin City without it's visuals in story about Hartigan. It is a Max Payne game and it's amazing

Kacpa2 the problem is that it is so different to the point its not Max Payne anymore. The only thing MP3 had in common with MP1 and MP2 was the main character and bullet time. There are no returning characters, nothing connecting it to the previouse games. MP3 feels like a game rockstar made and then slammed Max Payne in the title to make it sell. MP2 was about finishing the story, it did not need a sequal.

Errr... Is this a "it is not exactly the same, therefore it is entirely different" kind of comment? Of course there are differences. Otherwise it would have been Man of Fire: The Game. But the visuals, the atmosphere, and pretty much the entire setup was directly lifted. And some scenes throughout with the protagonists drunkenly stumbling around the room are present as well. It doesn't need to be an *exact* 1 to 1 carbon copy to be a rip off.

I love the first two Max Payne games, but any desire I had to play the third game was killed by the first gameplay video I watched. A couple minutes of gameplay and then five minutes of unskippable cutscene! The in-level cutscenes in games like Jedi Academy and Elite Force II drove me crazy. There's no way I'd be able to play a game like MP3 without wanting to put my fist through the screen. What the fuck is wrong with game developers today? It's like their gaming experience goes back all of six months. Did they even look at the previous games? Did they think "Yeah, the old games were really good, but let's flush all that down the toilet and force our own crappy ideas on players instead!"?

You’d want to skip cutscenes on your first way through?
@lurkerrekrul
@lurkerrekrul 3 жыл бұрын
@@Cj-xt6tv Not usually, but if the cutscenes end up being a mini-movie all on their own that goes on for more than a couple minutes, I get impatient to get back to the game. Frankly, I hate in-level cutscenes. They break up the flow of the game and destroy your sense of immersion. And in almost every case, it would be much cooler to experience whatever is happening from the viewpoint of your character rather than just watching an FMV play. In my opinion, loading an FPS game with tons of FMVs, especially in the middle of levels, is just a lazy way to try and extend the playing time. And if I'm playing that part of the game for the second time, those cutscenes better be skippable. Forcing users to sit through an FMV that they've already seen is really poor game design, especially in today's games, that usually don't have save anywhere and instead force you to rely on checkpoints. Which is another thing I despise. Just saying.

Story is good, the atmosphere is fantastic, graphics and all that, and soundtrack is beyond awesome. I had goosebumps watching your review because of it. godly Cutscenes can be skipped, all of them. You just need to wait for the game to load. You see, they have tried for the best, made those loading screens disappear, but what do you know, now ppl complain about game loads while the cutscenes play :/ Still, nice review. thanks Sonny Jim!

@Gggmanlives Great review as per usual. I'm glad that the 3rd Max Payne review ended on a high note. Just an FYI, the loading screens on Max Payne were supposedly hidden during the cinematics, hence why you couldn't skip them as the cinematic began. I think the short cut-scenes are skip-able yet the longer ones are not. Either way I get where you're coming from. It's irritating doing a second playthrough and having to endure long cut-scene that you've seen before.

It's July 2016 and I am just now playing this game for the first time. I honestly can't believe that they did away with the comic book cutscenes - that style of video game storytelling was 100% unique to Max Payne and that fact that they got rid of it is incomprehensible....it changes the entire atmosphere of the game. Also, I usually play games at the hardest difficulty, but DAMN, this one caught me off guard. I have been playing for maybe two hours and I have died at least 40 times....this is some punishing shit. All that being said I am enjoying the game immensely...it's just a bit disappointing how Rockstar have tried to make it their own instead of sticking to the style and aesthetic of Max Payne 1/2 that we all know and love

Great job. I couldn't agree more with every aspect of your review. The mechanics and technical aspects of the game were A+ amazing, with the only real downside being the incessant cutscenes. It really drove me crazy when I first played it because the game play is just soooooo good and smooth. Cutscenes seem to be a hallmark of modern AAA titles and even when they're good I can't help but think: "get your movie out of my game." What happened to the Doom model of starting the action within the first 3 seconds of booting the game up?

I guess everyone's been waiting for this review and the wait was totally worth it. Great review! I played this game a few months ago and indeed, it was brilliant despite the flaws. The flaw (on the PC version) of the load times being rather long (and thus you can't skip cutscenes easily) are pretty bad, since they also show up in the extra (arcade) modes when I played it but yeah. Positives outweigh the negatives for me and the ending is really satisfying. Also that soundtrack, man.

I agree that the unskippable cutscenes are a big flaw in the game but they are actually hiding loading screens. That's why you can't skip them. I enjoyed the story a lot so that never bothered me in the 3 times I played through it but I can understand why some might be. As for the setting and the Noir detective feel of the 1st 2 games, I thought I would miss it so much before the game released but once I actually played it I found it to be a really dark, violent and depressive tale for the character and it was quite fitting. As a HUGE Max Payne fan, I thought MP3 was a blast and that it really did live up to the hype.

With writing main characters don't have to change. but there actions have to have an impact or change other characters. Snake plisken for example never changes but his actions lead to big changes and his acts change other characters. This is a type of writing you can do when you don't really want a massive change or a slower gradual mutigamed/story arc. And TBF there are intractables in MP1 and 2 were you get mini cutscenes that change the flow quite a bit

@gggmanlives - I personally believe you are mistaking the purpose of the long cinematics. I agree that they are too long and negatively affect the replayability, but the reason they kept them was to try and conceal the fact that the loading times for the levels are horrendous. To be fair, i did play it first on PS3 on the "Normal"(?) difficulty setting and had a pretty miserable time. But even on PC on the easiest setting, popping heads left and right, it still pisses me off since Max is wet tissue paper and will drop dead if you so much as aim at an enemy from cover. You can't jump unless it is to hurdle over something, you can't throw grenades or moltov cocktail, and the playing area between cut scenes is small, but even within those small areas doors will close and lock behind you on the their own, further segmenting the playing areas.

I still prefer controller for this game though, just because I'm not landing headshots with every shot (which kind of devalues a headshot IMO). I wish Rockstar would take lessons from say, the Uncharted games when it comes to aiming, because all their games have pretty shitty aiming and often use auto-aim to make up for it (which is coincidentally terrible in MP3)

+DrearierSpider1 MP3 is designed for controllers. That weapon wheel, FOV, slow paced gun fights, limited inventory etc were all designed for controllers in mind. Of course aiming is better with mouse but it wasn't used to its fullest potential like in first two games. If you move camera so quickly in MP3 with mouse, the game breaks and Max starts to behave awkwardly. i.minus.com/ibs59JI1lRDAwD.gif Rockstar are primarily Console devs.
