Thanks to a Modder, who goes by ‘Slasks Psykbunker’, has just released a demo of Max Payne RTX Remix, a mod that enables path tracing in the original Max Payne 1 game. This mod makes the game look almost like a remake.

That voice will never, ever get old. I love these games. Especially the first two. Played them religiously when I was in school. I can’t wait to play the remakes and as tradition I gotta fire up the OG’s and get into the world of Max Payne once again.

Hell yeah! Although with the remake I hope they redo the baby’s blood labyrinth. I hated platforming on those 2 sequences. My roommates were just weirded out, they were unfamiliar with the game and hated the sound of the baby crying and Max’s wife dying/pleading for Alan to come save her.

Man I remember the night I came home with my mom and my bros. My dad was on the phone I can hear him in his room. I walk in to my room with my brothers we had just gotten the Xbox so we were excited to hop on. We had one of those bigger wood finished box tvs and on top of it was Max Payne fresh out Frys Electronics. My dad would call to ask if I thought a game was good. This time he surprised us. My brothers and I were stoked we thanked my dad and popped the CD in. “My Beretta stirred nervously under my coat but the train doors had already shut behind me…” Max Payne forever change the way I look at games.

This game the atmosphere when it came out there was nothing like it. I was a kid but it intrigued me and kept my head stress free during difficult times. I replayed it many times loved the bullet time especially. It was a very dark game but one that pulls you in. Still to this day I think Max Payne is still one of the most underrated games. Seeing this getting love makes me wanna play through it all again.

It makes it seem like the light is actually shining on it without that typical "realistic shine" most games look for. It's not detering, but more convincing. It works well with this. I see exactly what you're trying to convey.

First 3D game I've ever finished. Got it from my parents for Christmas, so I have vivid memories of playing it at the age of 13 with actual snow outside, as the story depicted happened on a cold winter. No other piece of media will feel so atmospheric and impactful for me.

I feel like RTX mods that would actually work well with older games is if said games already had an emphasis on good lighting. Like the original FEAR or STALKER games would probably look amazing with ray-tracing.

Most of these RTX makeovers for older games like Doom, Half Life 1, etc look really bad and just kinda pointless, but this actually looks surprisingly good! I think credit really goes to the absolutely incredible texture work in the first game!

I also think one of the significant factors is that the realistic lighting of the mod accentuates the moody neo-noir atmosphere of the game. Shadows are darker and lights are brighter. The stand out moments for the lighting are when the train at the beginning is going by, it's real-time lighting following; and the old-timey subway being almost pitch black in certain spots looked beautiful and creepy at that.

It looks good but if there is anything I have learned is that Rockstar will always remake the games better and of better graphical quality. For example the GTA vice city graphics mods to GTA6. GTA 6 looks much better in my opinion.
