My grandmother loved Max Reger. That's the reason why I'm now watching this one. Goosebumps and absolutely stunning.

A musician of Bashmet's sensitivity and discernment should surely have recognized that this sounds infinitely better as a solo piece.

This my favorite suite! Oh my!!! Play it Yuri! I had no idea there was an orchestra part.

Yuri's fine on a Testore, I think it has a superb sound!

I once had the CD(which seemed out-of-print for quite a while). The orchestration should be arranged by Victor Poltoratsky according to the liner notes. I love this version very much. It shows what the music and harmony meant to be, just as how we should understand Bach's solo suite from a contrapuntal point of view. Although I would perform in the original way, this orchestrated version does serve as a great reference.

@Arkhangemon I would guess to say that Reger himself may have orchestrated the piece. However may not have published it. He was a highly active orchestrator of others' works.

I plan to compose a lot of viola music. Most of it will be dark, lonely, love, and happiness. When I write for viola I like to make a very destinctive difference between viola and violin.

Reger didn't write an orchestral version. Bashmet wrote this orchestral part. its supposed to be un-accompanied suite for viola.

Not really!! Arrangement with orchestra from this work was made by Victor Poltoratsky, not Bashmet

did anyone notice he messes up on the last 16th of the 2nd to last measure?

Interesting, but I must say I prefer the original solo version.

The accompaniment is personally Bashmet's.

Not true, it was made by Viktor Poltoratsky

I want the accompaniment...it was written for viola solo, so I wonder who orchestrated the orchestra's part?

I prefer this version with the accompaiment of the orchestra....it sounds better!

i think viola suite, alone viola without orchestra part, is better... more espiritual and less poor

This is most disappointing, the orchestra has simply robbed the piece of the intensity and depth of the solo original version. A musician of

are you kidding me? Reger emulated Mozart and his style. Definitely not the sounds, though. But if you rewrote some passages he wrote, especially in Op. 77b, etc. and rewrote them in a major key it would sound totally mozartian.

Wow, a little too much saccharin in this performance for my taste. Great piece without the sappy accompaniment (and playing).

I think one Stradivarius would be enough! Lord knows that Testore was a b-rate maker anyhow!
