Really good conversation. Was very happy with KOFXV this year, heck the whole KOF series was a big hit for me this year. But you definitely made a good point that it needed more single player content. It's hard to get new people into a franchise by just telling them "Go online and get beat by people that have been playing it until you know what to do." Give them some modes with some interesting stuff to do until they think "Okay I've checked this out enough that I feel good going online."

Definitely agree, especially considering how much legacy skill carries over to this game. I've had people tell me they can't find "scrubs" in KOF and i always have to tell them at this point you're barely gonna find any. The majority of guys who play online have been playing for decades

KOF15 and Melty Blood were my two favorites this year. KOF was good right out the gate with only a few flaws being matchmaking, and MB really managed to turn things around with the great balance patches and free dlc.

My favorite fighting game this year, hands down, was Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle R. I got into the series a few years after the original game came out, and I never owned a PS3, and my computer wasn't strong enough to emulate it either until this year, so I basically didn't get to play the original ASB and had resigned to the likelihood that it'd be stuck in PS3 prison. And then ASBR was announced and I went crazy watching that state of play announcement. All they had to do was just port the game, but not only that, they tweaked the battle mechanics to be more responsive, added 10 new characters, some from Eyes of Heaven and some brand new, planned 4 paid DLC characters on top of 2 free DLC characters, and gave the game more balance patches than any other fighter made my the same developer? They did not need to put this much effort into this release and they did it anyway. Literally the only thing I can complain about is the netcode, but I still love this game to death, and despite it coming out so late int he year, it still ended up being my second most played game this year.

@@nyarancia It really is. That and crossplay. If they were gonna go this extra mile everywhere else and regularly update the game with balance patches, you'd think they'd do that stuff too. It's such an easy thing not to fumble. That said, I still love the game to bits.

For me personally I go: 1. KOF XV 2. DNF Duel 3. JoJo Allstar Battle R 4. Multiverses As a big KOF fan I love what KOF XV brought to the table. Definitely my favorite fighter release this year. The only thing that’s holding it back is the matchmaking issue.

Max please give Red Earth a second chance. You got a bad impression on the game because you actually fought the the best tessa player in the world. Please stream this game 1 more time. But in training mode first. Our RE discord was documenting and also doing tournaments with money prizes for this game since 2019. And it's genuinely really fun game with tons of tech and unique twists while playing neutral. I'm telling you this is Street Fighter EX3 situation all over again. 16:30 yeah I agree. There's not a whole lot of fighters I can say I am Hooked on cause of "You'll love this at some point". Only one off the top of my head is Skullgirls. But what Capcom's doing for SF6 is deff making the game *FUN* looking with all it's interesting features, which is why I'm actually interested in getting it, unlike previous versions where I was "eh" about playing it "for fun".

Multiversus is fun, but it is ultimately a 2v2 focused game. People who play Smash or Fighting games are not really looking for a 2v2 game specifically. It's nice to have and fun to try, but when you think of a fighitng game, it's one vs one. That is where the competition is fiercest just by it's nature. 2v2 can be competitive but it can much more easily devolve into madness, which is how most of my matches went. Sure, we were all trying to win, and trying to help each other but it just feels so random and crazy compared to a controlled 1v1 competition. Just my 2 cents. I am sure other people have other reasons why they think it didn't do as well as say Brawlhalla, long term. The combat is a little floaty, sure, but it works well in 2v2, which leads back to my point, the game was not made for fast 1v1 style platform combat. It was designed to be a 2v2 focused game that was more strategic in how you use your abilities rather than just pure skill and reactions.

To me, is essentially the same thing as Max, characters, there's tons of characters i love in it, but not one that really clicked with me, and i think the roster is still kinda small, because of smash i'm used to have a lot of options, so, it really is about the characters, but lack of stuff to do in the game is also a problem, just playing normal matches is too repetitive, i think the game lacks other modes, like smash that have multiple game modes.

@ShoryukenPunch Brawlhalla has 2v2 fights but it is not designed with purely 2v2 in mind. You won't find any support moves in that game like there are in Multiversus.

Fresh cut! Starting the New year off strong Max!

KOF XV was honestly not only my fighting game of the year...but it also was kinda my top 5 games of the year. It's one of my most played games this year(140+ Hours) and even despite me not being able to do long combos and what not...I still have a lot of fun! Multiverses is fun too( but I play it selectively),Capcom Fighting Collection made me see why Darkstalkers was so cool, and DNF Duel was REALLY fun...until I made an important realization about myself. So...I feel like this year made me realize what my preferences in fighting games are and while stuff like KOF, SF, SoulCalibur, and Smash let me do rather well with my current knowledge & ability...Anime fighters have kinda fallen off for me. Not because they're bad, but more so because I can't keep up. I'm not very good at long combos and being good at neutral, blocking, and teching throws can only get me so far. I enjoy watching them, but if I feel like I need long combos to stand a chance in a FG...I start losing interest(and even motivation) in playing. And to note...I've been playing FGs more seriously since 2017-2018(around DBFZ & MvCI) so trust me...this thought came after playing a LOT of FGs and trying to improving while doing so! And heck...I started feeling this way with DBFZ season 3 and I can actually do combos decently well in that game. Combos are really cool, and I get a kick out of being able to pull off some of the short combos I can actually manage CONSISTANTLY...but I don't strive for the epic cool combos like I used too...just wanna be good enough to fight good players and have fun.

@@urdimsum7961 Switching back and forth from Casual and Ranked matches with a few room matches every now and them(and facing pretty much whoever). Got a good couple match, but my rank tanked pretty hard since I faced pretty much mostly champion ranked players( I was originally around rank 12 and now I'm either 4 or 5...you learn a lot fighting people better than you). Had fun still, but I'm gonna have to raise it back up when crossplay hits.

for me KOFXV would be the number one game this year. I still love playing that game and the upcoming patch will make me wanna play even more. DNF DUEL just did not click with me, I was actually pretty good but the game was just to shallow and I was just not having fun after 1 month.

Sorta tangential, but with you covering platform fighters on the channel, i'd love to see you check Pokken out again: Despite being way more of a traditional fighter, with full movelists, a height system (though many people don't realize it has one), cancels, just-frames, focus attacks and FADC; you bounced off of it at the time very early into the game's scene thinking it was mostly an arena fighter. I think if you gave it another shot alongside somebody in the community you'd find a lot to like: There's a lot of cool stuff you can do to manipulate when the 2d and 3d shifts occur as a resource mangement and optimization thing to encourage adaptation, and the height system working as a way for moves to bypass and punish each other rather then blocks is really interesting too.

Capcom Fighting Collection was the only "new" fighting game I played this year and man those games are tough to learn. I didn't dare trying any online match cause even the simplest combos are hard for me. I just had enough fun scrolling through the art galleries and playing the arcade modes (on the easiest difficulty ^^). Can't wait for SF6 so I can really feel invested in a new game (that I can hopefully play!)

Absolutely agree with this list especially Rumble Verse and DNF placement. I love KoF as much as I love Street Fighter as a series with cool characters doing cool shit, but DNF is almost bordering on another Skullgirls (my fav fg ever) to me just for how easy and fun it is to play a few sets for a while and not worry about frame data and being too precise/optimal with my play, inputs, and damage. Excellent game for casual fgc players.

Completely agree on the DNF points and hope these things get addressed. Mobility being as chunky as it is makes the game very all or nothing. It's not a game that needs air-dashing, double jumps or air-blocks but hang time in the air feels pretty rough alongside the slower grounded movement speed and it all contributes to movement feeling kind of locked and not very expressive. Defense is another part of it and the larger health pools is a good step in the right direction but only having 1 type of block and very few ways to break blockstrings other than Guard Cancels and DPs means that defense often feels like losing instead of feeling like you're responding properly to your opponent's offense with good defense . For new players the "1 button special" just reveals something else about the problems new players face and that's timing and button discipline which is arguably a way bigger hurdle. DNF is pretty strict. It's not KoF strict but it's definitely not Strive lenient, and you need a decent intuition for spacing and how your moves are hitting in order to string together combos. If you ever watch actual new players learn a fighting game for the first time the first thing they have to unlearn is mashing buttons in combos and blockstrings which often causes them to lose the cancel window. I feel like the devs started with these ideas of "this is how we want to get new players into the game" like the slower animations and long time for OTG extensions and then they realized halfway through that it wasn't doing as much as they thought and just continued building a normal fighting game for players familiar with the genre.

Your KoF conversation with skill levels is what DNF felt like for me pretty much. it's not 30 years of experience, but like 20 hours in the lab is what it felt like. So I was either stomping people near effortlessly when I didn't even lab combo routes, or I was getting touched once or twice and dying for it (and needless to say without labbing combos I was not doing the same). The few games with other people just naturally figuring it out who weren't entirely new though were great. It's also why I enjoyed it so much in the betas where everyone was like that more or less. I really want to play more DNF, just need to convince one of my friends to get it, he tends to approach it the same way as I do. One who has it already does for most characters so random works, but he'll have the odd main he learns it propelry for, which is alright, but not quite the same.

I played the free demo and had a lot of fun with the 5 characters available (Jotaro, Joseph, Jolyne, Kira, DIO). As someone who is also both a Jojo and FG fan I would love to get asbr, but I can't justify doing so without rollback. So I hope Bamco and CC2 will eventually understand it's importance and add it at some point.

SNK should definitely be acknowledged more for their legacy of their fighting games. KOF 15 is a step in the right direction in regards to SNK forming communication with the FGC. I'm really hopeful that the matchmaking is resolved by next year as that issue is the main Achillies' heel of KOF 15. I'm really looking forward to what SNK has in store for the future, considering that Garou 2, the long awaited sequel, is under development. It was shocking that DNF Duel fell out of place within two weeks or so of its release. I really had fun with the game during its beta run. While it's great the game is finally getting more content, I feel that it may not be enough to bring back alot of the people.

For "new" fighting games is it for me the Capcom Fighting Collection and the best game for me from it is Cyberbot. I never played it before, but I like it. But my favourite FG this year is Pokken again, because I can still find play against others and even the in game online rankings show over thousand players every month.

we’re in the gaming era where we have access to so many games either past or present that yeah a game has to be great cuz otherwise why would we waste our time when there are better more fun options available instantly. Unfortunately , it seems like a battle pass/dlc seems to work really well for fighting games to keep player engagement going. As long as it’s valuable and priced fairly then i guess i have no issue with dlc but damn do i miss unlocking characters and costumes by hitting certain checkpoints.

Sad Jojo ASBR got completely ignored by the vast majority of the fighting game community, it’s a very fun game with a large roster of super unique characters. Bad netcode really is a death sentence.

Honestly, I feel like a lot of fighting games lately launch and get people excited, but soon afterwards things get quiet. Hopefully in 2023, developers can fix those issues. Was Capcom Fighting Collection made in-house? Interesting. If I had to guess, Capcom might be looking into their legacy titles and making collections so maybe we'll see the coveted Marvel vs. Capcom collection and Capcom vs. SNK collection soon. I also agree that it'd be nice to see a Street Fighter EX series collection. King of Fighters XV is 1 I didn't buy yet. I will. On a related note, it's weird how SNK hasn't made a legacy collection of the KOF series.

As a KOF fan yeah KOF playerbase is always like that, there's people who are fresh or very casual (like me) with no actual FG skills or experience and then there's the extra hardcore playerbase that can do some unholy insanely good combos that been playing KOF since they were kids playing at the arcade machines, No in-between! And I agree with DNF Duel being on the first spot, this was a good year for FG, and next year seems even better!

Fighting hame of the year for me: Melty Blood, never have I vibed so hard with a fighting game than Type Lumina. Netcode gets rough at times, but every DLC character being free and an amazing soundtrack just makes this game the bee's knees

capcom needs to realize that re-releasing old fighting games dont hurt sales of current gen games that much because many ppl buy it for nostalgia collection factor and play occassionally than switch over, if they were that serious then would already be playing on fightcade. as a matter of fact, its a great opportunity to introduce ur IPs' lineage and culture; you see how many youtubers get excited when their fav game gets retroed and starts explaining why it was so significant or fun for them

5. DNF Duel 4. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle R! 3. The Rumble Fish 2 2. Capcom Fighting Collection 1. The King Of Fighters XV I don't really like DNF Duel, it's okay. JoJo's is cool, it's a lot funner game. The Rumble Fish 2 is lacking a lot of stuff but my judgment is mostly on gameplay and it's pretty damn good and solid. Capcom FC, just a lot of great games in the Collection. Mostly the Dark Stalkers games, definitely are classics. & of course my number 1, KOF XV. It is not only my favorite of this year, it is my favorite Fighting Game of All Time. Before you guys go crazy with my statement, I own almost every single 2D Fighting Game ever created and yes KOF XV is my favorite of them all. Yes it lacks some content but the gameplay is just so good and so smooth, so fun. If we can just have an option to turn off the Auto Combo button, I would love it even more.

I recently picked up skull girls and I think the music, animation, character design and more are god tier good. But it’s little too hard for me. It’s like mvc2 fast and you really need to be dexterous to play. I’m just not built for fighting games that are too chaotic

Same. Not a fan of MvC type of fighting mechanics. KOF felt a little more grounded which i preferred over MvC (tho i might be a bit biased with this franchise), and games like Power Rangers Battle for the Grid are great at being simple + fun however they have verry little content to get into. And being in a country with shitty internet and barely any servers kinda kills the multiplayer in a lot of this games for me.

KoF15 had a great gameplay that felt good, it big improvement over 14. I know many consider 94 the best but, for my money, KoF13 was the peak… although it had terrible netcode. 13’s gameplay and presentation were close to rivaling 3rd Strike.

If DNF just had some promising single-player mode... BlazBlue had these towers where you get items and buffs, MK11 has a huge ton of things to unlock + modificators, my all time favourite FF Dissidia Duodecim (best Dragon Ball game of all time) had a Dungeon mode where you get items, equipment, team members etc., Tekken Force/Devil Within If DNF had such a similiar game mode where you could colllect items, equip your character, maybe even fight in a sidescrolling manner (like GranBlue), just like in the original game, these six months of silence wouldn't have mattered for the game's reputation at all.

DNF duel is unfun to me when it's too punishing. It forces you to deal with crazy mismatches and you only get 2-3 mistakes per match. If it were 3v3 I wouldn't mind but in a 1v1 it's deflating. And being so accessible every match is at a moderate level so you never get to goof around in a match. It wants perfection or you die easily

I feel like Multiversus just had a botched "hype cycle" like out the gate people were surprised and having fun and speculating on what crazy characters they could add, only to announce Lebron who is definitely weird, and then Rick and Morty who are predictable. Then silence for months, Rick wasn't even added to the game for a while and then adding Gremlins who I guess are a deep cut, but I don't think anyone was asking for them. I'm not trying to come off as a Smash fan begging for Banjo or anything, I just think they should have kept with the Cartoon Network/Looney tunes for a bit since there are so many popular characters with the potential for great movesets. And the release schedule never seemed consistent so I have no idea who has been added or announced since.

Rumbleverse: I don't ike the art style/characters. I'd try it if it was super stylish like say that Naraka: Bladepoint game (man, why this one couldn't be f2p) but cartoony blobs are not my thing. Multiversus: cartoony blobs are not my thing, platformer fighters are not my thing and if they were I'd play Brawlhalla which has original characters. I grew up on Tom & Jerry, I don't want to play as them. I loved Game of Thrones, I don't wanna play Arya. I used to like Scooby Doo but there's no effing way I am playng a game with Shaggy in it. KoF15: The characters I wanted to play are either charge (Ash Crimson), really complicated (Angel) or play so differently from the rest of the roster that the skill wouldn't transfer (Dolores) or happen to be grapplers (Shermie). Maybe once the crossplay update happens and they fix matchmaking I could probably build a team out of Orochi Shermie, Isla and either try Dolores anyway or dunno, play Athene or something (part of my "I don't like like most of the characters so I guess I'll play Athene, Yuri and Kyo" KoF 13 team), assuming I'll have the funds for the game at that time. I gotta save for a new pc for SF6, Tekken 8 and MK12 (and all the Playstation exclusives that were/are/will be ported to pc and demand Windows 10). DNF Duel: I really wanted to try the game. but then few things happened. 1) game came out as I was broke, 2) it seemed to be dominated by projectile spam (exactly the last thing I want to deal with in a game with limited mobility), and all the characters I would hate fighting the most proved to be the most broken. 3) The game died on pc within a month and I didn't even manage to scrape up the money for it. And it's a shame cause for such a tiny roster I really liked several ones (visually at least): Kunoichi, Dragon Knight, Enchantress, Striker, Inquisitor, Vanguard... maybe if the game had a couple of single player modes or was closer to 20$? I could probably squeeze out 20 hours of entertainment from finishing the arcade mode a bunch of times and maybe tricking a friend or two to buy that cheap game. Also, Max STILL looks weird with short hair even though it's been a while.

to me the biggest problem fighting games have is their price. Every single one of them launches in a basic state for full price, and later on they launch more characters and other content for them for even more money. As someone who wants to play all of them its not a good business. The only good time to get into any fighting game price wise is when they are done. Otherwise you end up spending 100s of dollars just to keep up with one game, not to mention with multiple ones. I hate it, but then again i dont want them to become free to play either, because that might brings other bigger issues with it. I wanted to play and buy all of the bigger names KOF15, DNF, GGS, but its too much man.

So my top 10 most anticipated games of 2023 (non particular order): 1/ Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (Yeah it is Nintendo, sequel to GOTY 2017) 2/ Armored Core VI (No introduction because it's From Software Mecha game, finally not soul like game ... kinda) 3/ RE4 Remake (The whole gameplay trailer and they keep some elements of RE4 OG in this game, I know there's DLC in development, and I can't wait to see what's Capcom gonna do with this RE engine version of it) 4/ JUDAS (I put my trust on Ken Levine, so definitely is the no 1 contender for Best Narrative game for 2023) 5/ Street Fighter 6 (There are 2 Capcom's games that I mostly curious were this game and RE4 and this game actually has great beta moments, so I can't wait to play this game) 6/ Mortal Kombat 12 (The reason why I put it higher because I want to see what are they gonna do with 3D era characters and storyline) 7/ Final Fantasy XVI (Well, it's obviously one of the most anticipated game, but the reason why 16 turned me off was unable to control party members, so Imma wait for the reviews and Max instead) 8/ Alan Wake 2 (I wanted Remedy to make a survival horror game for so long) 9/ Tekken 8 (I want to put it on the higher list but I am clearly unsure about the redesign of characters I like) 10/ Spider-man 2 (I mean it's Spidey and Insomniac, so what did you expect?) ------------- This list can be changed a lot because we don't know specific date of Death Stranding 2 and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Honorable mention: Starfield, Lies of Pi and Diablo 4

I bounced off DNF because my brain has just gotten to the point where trying to juggle all the things it had going on just...doesn't happen. I could have trained and gotten better, I'm sure, but I just didn't have the time to, and by the time I COULD have, I felt very left in the dust. But MAN, I wanted to get way into it, cause it was FUN. And I'm glad they're going with the Jeff Gerstmann preference for balance which is: don't nerf the OP characters, make EVERYONE an OP character.
