There is truth in that, our perception of time is tied to new information. When we are children and young adults, almost everyday is filled with new information, people, situations, and experiences. As we settle into adulthood, the new things become fewer and further between, leading to our perception of time "speeding up". If you want to slow the clock, learn something new, go somewhere strange, meet intresting people!

I love Stardew’s placement. It makes 8 year old me feel so validated for loving Harvest Moon so much as a kid. I always felt the odd one out, I barely knew anyone that even knew what the series was. That the formula still works present day and that someone cares enough about that style of game to take it to the next level still brings me immense joy

Everything about that game is so freakin wholesome, both in the actual content and the its irl circumstances. It's the passion project of one man looking at Harvest Moon and going, "I love this and want to make this genre as perfect as it can be." And proceeded to do that for nearly 10 years to the point of surpassing his inspiration.

Stardew is one of the greatest games of all time IMO. I would put it next to Terraria as my personal favorites. Cant say enough good things about both of thoes games, and even though they are not very old, it has the super nintendo nostalgic feel to them that keep me coming back.

I know exactly how this is being a Rune Factory fan myself. Stardew valley definitely scratches that itch that we haven't really gotten since Rune Factory 3. (Although Tides of Destiny was one of my favorites)

Sonic Mania is my personal pick. I think it is such a perfect fit for the Switch, with it being both fast paced and easy to pick up and play.

damn how experiences vary, I picked it up to and have been wanting to for long, but my god did I absolutely hate the game, felt like it controlled like shit when ur a tad bit slow and so unsatisfying when you aren't very fast. I've probably only played half an hour so maybe it just had to grow on me but I really don't want to get into it.

I love the game but the first two worlds being classic levels really didn’t sit well with me I know it gets better after that but they should’ve focused on strictly new levels the game really needs a sequel that capitalizes on that

I think about this all the time. I struggle with mental health/personal issues too, and I’m AMAZED at how much Arlo is able to get done despite his own. That could be a way of coping with it, but it’s still impressive!

Personally my favorite Switch game is Super Smash Bros Ultimate, this game pulled together so many games and kinda of gamers into a celebration of video game history. The games whole life cycle was rich with fantastic reveals and fan moments we never thought would happen in a million years and it made it so magical. Nothing will ever beat the experience of being a Smash fan from 2018-2021 for me and for that reason and the fact that Ultimate is such an incredibly balanced and fun game, Ultimate is my favorite Switch game.

I played smash bros 64 and melee all the time when I was a teenager with my friends. I never played anything after melee and the switch reinvigorated my love for nintendo, so ultimate was pretty amazing for me too. In the leadup I got really excited to pick a new main and then it was so much fun getting better and learning how to actually play the game instead of what we thought we were doing back in the day lol. Such a beautiful game with so much good music and characters. I never got tired of looking at and controlling pink donkey kong. He just pops, his design is cute and cool at the same time. The way he blows air his nose like a teakettle when you unleash a fully charged punch and when his eyes roll around all goofy when people break your shield. I always played fox in melee and would rush down people, but I decided I love donkey kong and heavyweight would be a nice change and man it was fun learning to play DK. AHHHHHH brings back memories sorry for rant, your comment just got me reminiscing. My nephew got INSANELY good at the game, way better than I ever was.

@@JoeMama-yd1ve the game's roster is so massive I can never settle on just one character lol. I generally play the Final Fantasy characters but I have such a soft spot for heavies man, I think my DK has a better winrate than my Sephiroth does, probably my favorite character to just play is Ganon. If you pick the game back up you should try out some more characters similar to DK's playstyle like Bowser or Cloud, maybe give some of the DLC a look too, especially considering the stags and music cuz some of those OSTs are really, really good (Terry and Kazuya cough cough). Really nice to read wholesome stories once and a while, rare on the internet to feel heartwarmed by something

I really love astral chain personally as I really love the way the game uses the second analogue stick. I know it's not super mindblowing but I really love how platinum was able to use the second analogue stick for something other than the camera and actually use it for combat and it really made the game super interesting and unique. I also love the Smash ultimates rumble feature. It uses it really well and it helps me a lot in the game. With the HD rumble, it helps a lot with knowing where I am in the stage and also gives a sense of how powerful my attack was.

Astral Chain is a bit of a hidden gem now. Really a triple A game in terms of polish and production. Got well reviewed but I don't hear nearly as much acclaim and discussion for it as I feel it deserves. I think if it had released in 2022 vs when it came out it would have been met to a greater reception yet Nintendo had that exclusivity deal. Anyways it's a great game. I loved it, the world, the characters, the art-style, game mechanics/combat, dialogue, UI, etc. all is very well done. I expect finding a physical copy of the game will be expensive in the future when the Switch is old news and people are looking back on the system for great games they might have missed or want to replay.

Astral chain is very cool but man it's in desperate need of 60 fps. A higher framerate would make the combat work much better, as it would mean tighter and more responsive controls. It works OK at 30 but like any platinum character action game, 60 would be so much better

I just finished Spiritfarer. I put 45 hours into it in two weeks. That’s not normal for me. It’s not gonna be everyone’s favorite, but go try the demo. That was enough to get me hooked.

The Switch has an incredible game library already, and I think sometimes we all forget since we're so focused on the new stuff. So it's important to look back and appreciate all the great games! Lots of great picks here, the indie scene is so amazing, and nothing beats Breath of the Wild!

YES! One of my favorites on the switch for sure! Who knew that a X2 strategy style game with rabbids characters (which are basically ubisofts version of minions) can be so fun?! With laugh out loud moments (The phantom boss) amazing music and actually solid DLC content, this is one of my all time favorites. But I seriously doubt many games can even come close to BOTW. That game glued me to the screen and made me feel like I'm 13 playing on my N64 Ocarina of time again, with the same sense of wonder and amazement after every corner.

Same! It's such a strange concept that everyone was very wary of when it was announced, and now that everyone has played it, it's truly a masterpiece of a crossover. It looks like the sequel is really gonna change up the gameplay, so I really do hope it drops soon-ish.

I'm probably gonna get alot of flack here. But I personally think Hollow Knight is pretty overrated. Not calling it bad. Just don't see it as an masterpiece. It's way too hard, combat gets repetitive, the map design and levels is an mess, lacks of checkpoint departmentss and it's way too big to fully memorized. I get it's an Metroidvania style game. But honestly, it's not what I call an well design. I do love the art direction and tone it's going for. But that's all it gotten as far as I know.

@@jaretco6423 the point I will absolutely agree with here is the overall size of the game. While I enjoy HK more than you, the progression feels agonizingly slow at times. I think the designers put the charm system in there to offset this, but changing a loadout doesn't hit the same as opening a new pathway or earning a new ability.

The Switch has been so friggin awesome! It single-handedly got me back into both console and handheld gaming. Breath of the Wild's wonder cannot be overstated. Summer 2018, I would drop off my fiancée at class a couple times a week, and while she was in class, I would go to the parking lot, hook my Switch up to the car sound system, mount the Switch on my steering wheel, and experience magic for an hour and a half. Absolutely incredible experience. Additional titles that were standouts for me, but not on Arlo's list: 1. Golf Story - an unexpected favorite for me. I adore this game. 2. MK8 DX - My first MarioKart game ever. I love it. 3. Mario+Rabbids - I'd never played a rabbids game before, because I always thought they looked irritating. But they pair perfectly with the Mario universe, giving me genuine laughs, and fun tactical gameplay. 4. DOOM 2016. Impressive port, and I love the gyro controls. I have it on PC and Xbox, but the Switch port is my favorite version of DOOM 2016.

One of the few games out there so good, I completed it twice. (Once on Switch, and then again with all regular strawberries gotten and all levels beaten, on Steam. From there I got to dabble in some really cool fan mods like "Secret of Celeste Mountain.")

My favorite is Super Mario Maker 2, I love the story mode a lot. I also love the course world and you literally get infinite replay value out of it, plus with multiplayer versus and co op it's even more fun, and it improved a lot from the first with slopes, clear conditions, etc. This was also the most hyped I've been for a game and MAN did it deliver, I love it so much easy 10/10.

It's not my favoirote Switch game, but MM2 was an amazing time. I got to flex my level building creativity in ways I didn't expect. I was even able to create a Super World with 8 worlds. Story Mode was also great for inspiration and fun. I will NEVER forget my time with this game.

@@themc3140 Agreed. The first Mario Maker was a truly special game for me. It had so many small, charming little things about it, and it was bursting with love for the series. Mario Maker 2 just doesn't have that same charm, and that combined with the lack of some conveniences makes the creation process a lot more dull. Playing other people's levels is an absolute BLAST in Mario Maker 2 and easily beats out the first, but creating levels is a lot less fun. I only ever play the game to try out other people's levels and never make my own anymore.

you have no idea how much i would play if the online wasn't garbage and australian queue times weren't ages because of matchmaking/dead playerbase because the connection sucks i swear even americans have longer then they should have for queue times, when you only 3 people.... i wish we could mod this game in the future and play with friends ngl seems like infinite fun tbh

I know recency bias is a thing, but Kirby and the Forgotten Land really is one of the best games on Switch for me. Couple it with SM3DW+ Bowser's Fury, Paper Mario The Origami King, Luigi's Mansion 3, Hades, Celeste, Danganronpa V3 and Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle and you have a very diverse and great system for me. There's loads of games I haven't mentioned which are also great, that's how many games the Switch has!

I have had my switch for almost two years, and I was legit blown away how many games it had and the pure quality. It offers a very unique experience and its ability to appeal to a wide audience is wonderful. I cannot fathom the future but it's definitely looking bright in my eyes

The switch have been a very amazing system so far, I used to be pretty picky on what games I would try, but ever since the switch released, I have tried tons of different types of games. My favorite games for the switch, 1st party: XC2 - Long game with great story, only downside is the combat is complicated/boring at start FE3H - Build characters with different classes and different routes BOTW - Fun to explore, great mechanics Super Mario Odessey - Just very fun Animal Crossing - Cozy game, building/terraforming in peace For third party games, which I would also consider favorites: Celeste - Hard, but very satisfying platformer Danganronpa Decadence - Solving mysteries, finding out murder casses and try to survive The Binding of Isaac - Lots of secrets, quite the challange, always random Stardew Valley - Relaxing, farming, mining, crafting and so much more.

I’m a big Subnautica fan (as you can tell by my profile pic) and so it being in the switch makes playing the game so much more convenient since it’s already a fantastic game that can be played anywhere with the switch.

I love Subnautica too, but have mixed feelings about the Switch version. I was very near to the end of the game when my save file became corrupted. Haven’t played it since.

Kirby Star Allies was one of the more divisive entries in recent years, and while I don’t love it as much as the previous three mainline games, each time I go back to it I find something new to love, especially in multiplayer. Super Kirby Clash was also really fun, and I still find myself going back to replay some quests (since I haven’t gotten all the heroic missions yet). Kirby Fighters 2 is seriously a great competitive fighting game, and has some of my favorite versions of a ton of Kirby music. And of course, Forgotten Land is just terrific and a breath of fresh air for the series, and may have dethroned Amazing Mirror as my favorite entry in the series (though I may still need to wait a bit for the hype of 3D Kirby to fade before I can say definitively). As a fan of other stuff… #RhythmHeavenSwitch , #KidIcarusSwitch, and #VioRhyseAlberia.

Really comes down to the holy triforce of metroid, mario and zelda. The three games every nintendo console should have. I used to put BOTW on top, then super mario Odyssey. But the more I look back at them the more flaws I notice. But really my main issue is that both are completely filled with padding. Repeated minigames, challenges, a lot of just mindless collecting and BOTW in particular has a ridiculously small number of enemies, so much so that previous non open world zelda games actually tend to have more, like OOT. Also it probably has the most uninteresting dungeons and bosses of the franchise, but I understand that was not their priority. For me personally, I have to put Metroid Dread on the top, short, intense and to the point I don't think I've had so much fun with a game in a long time. It has awesome replay value and it is a joy to speedrun. So much so that I now have spent almost as much time with it as with the other two, and I wil definetely come back once in a while to finish it, just like the other games in the franchise. I may someday replay Mario Odyssey or BOTW... but I don't think I will ever attempt to 100% complete any of them again.

Pretty sure that I'm the only person who feels very "eh" about BOTW. Part of my issue is that I really liked Zelda games before and most of the reasons I liked them weren't really as big of a part of BOTW. I should say I haven't finished it, though, so I may not have the best picture. I think it's a good game, I'm just not sure if it's a good Zelda game (to me)...

@@normalgamergal I don't think you are the only one. I really like botw, but something that is becoming more and more important to me is replayability and brevity. I replayable game is one that I can take with me for years to come playing them for time to time. Previous zelda games are very replayable, one of my most replayed games is OoT. Botw is extremely unreplayable (at least for me). Most of its appeal is the freedom of exploring the world for the first time, but you can do that only once, I even don't know if I will enjoy Botw 2 as much as the first one, just because so much of the appeal ran its course. i also fear that this will be a situation where the sequel will almost replace the previous title and I will further feel like there is no reason to go back to it. Which is sad for the zelda franchise with each game very unique and fun to replay. I am also kind of tired of open world games... i tend to only play them now on very special occasions (like a new zelda) and botw did the genre very well and added a ton of stuff to it. But it also falls into a ton of the trappings of the genre.

Zelda is my favorite series of all time and I thoroughly enjoyed BOTW. Odyssey felt like a breath of fresh air and a return to the style of my favorite Mario game, Sunshine. Both are truly excellent games with some glaring flaws (both have too much padding. Odyssey is far too easy, even in the post-game, and the goofy decision to leave moons just sitting around devalues them overall. BOTW can feel a little empty and the lack of what I would consider real dungeons [coupled with the fact that the final area, Hyrule Castle, is basically the best dungeon in the game] kind of hurts the game overall. Playing the Link's Awakening remake on Switch actually scratched that traditional Zelda itch for me and showed me some of what I felt was missing.) Metroid Dread however, is a near-perfect experience. Yes, it's relatively short, but that's used to the game's advantage. It's a speed-running dream. I put almost 30 hours into my first playthrough just going for 100% collectibles, dying to bosses, and exploring. But then I managed a sub-5 hour second run and am going back for thirds with the hard mode speed-run. It's just so smooth, concise, and trimmed down to exactly what I want from a Metroid game. It's perfect.

Metroid Dread is everything I ever wanted from a 2D metroid sequel. It is also a marvel of a 2D game, one of the most beautifuland smooth 2.5D games ever made imo. The fact that Dread managed to stand out in a sea of awesome indie metroidvanias is remarkable.

Nintendo consoles is all that I own and switch is my favorite console, but I dropped my fanboy glasses this time even if it hurt me doing so. And I realized that BOTW and Odyssey suck, they just do. The more I analyze them objectively the more I see how they suck. But it's hard to see because Mario + Zelda get best game status by default. In the minds of many they can't ever be bad. "Excellent games on their own right" is what I used to believe as well. Then I realized I named them as such because I couldn't see myself hating Zelda or Mario. They can't ever be bad, right? But I just can't lie to myself anymore, these games have glaring flaws and I hate it, because I wanted to love them.

I know it shouldn’t count, but the recent HD remake of Xenoblade 1 is fantastic. It’s such a beautiful game with a fantastic story, top-tier characters, and thrilling gameplay. I recommend it to everyone who has ever enjoyed any RPG ever. The extra content from the HD version is really neat too. It does a great job at tying some loose ends in a very satisfying way. Melia especially gets some great additional character development through it, even though she was already a fantastic character. I’m really excited for Xenoblade 3. It looks like it will really live up to this masterpiece.

Arlo loves the world of BotW and really good stories with dark themes, so you'd think Xenoblade would be something he'd like. But the combat being more complex than your typical Nintendo game and anime keeps Arlo away from the series unfortunately. I really wish he could get over those 2 hurdles, because so many people who have those same issues ended up loving Xenoblade anyway.

That was mostly a criticism of XC2 if anything. That game did use a lot of overused anime tropes and cliches, and the art style definitely kept some people away.

5 years. WOW! It's hard to believe it's been that long. The Switch is my favorite console right now. Hollow Knight is my favorite game. I know Hollow Knight is on other systems as well, but I have only played it on the Switch. It's so much fun! The biggest metroidvania I've ever seen. It has really fun mechanics, beautiful artwork, adorable characters, and amazing music! The story is dark, mysterious, and a little ominous, but I love stuff like that. I also love that you have to explore and look for the story elements to really understand what's happening in the world. Team Cherry also purposely made the game so that you can find multiple pathways to each area and find ways to skip over areas where you would normally need some kind of movement upgrade. Some people complain that the game is too hard or Souls-like, but I like the difficulty, I personally see very very little in common with the Souls series, and I am ridiculously obsessed with just how amazingly good this game is!!! I could go on for hours about how amazing it is, but all you really need to know is that Hollow Knight is definitely one of the greatest games of all time! I also absolutely love Undertale. The only problem is that once you finish a neutral, a pacifist, and a suicide run it's not quite as fun to replay. I'm still obsessed though. I would have ranked it a little higher than you did personally. I'm a little surprised you don't have Kirby and the Forgotten Land on this list. That game is so adorable and fun! And then there's the dark twist at the end! Ahh I love it so much! I have beaten the main game, but I haven't completed 100% yet. I still need to do most of the post credit extra stuff. Not at all surprised Breath of the Wild is at the top! That's pretty much everybody's number 1. LOL I of course have not played every game on Switch. I know there are several that I haven't seen any advertising for or even heard of. I might just get some of your highly ranked recommendations in the future.

I few days ago, Metroid Dread became the first Metroid I ever finished, and probably only the second big game* I ever 100%-ed. It just grabbed me that much; once you unlock each new power-up that makes you feel stronger and more invincible...I felt like it was just a matter of time until I got EVERYTHING in the game. *I think the first was Sly 2: Band of Thieves Also, highly recommend for the Boss Battles because they just feel so dang incredible to master.

16:34 That's not true. Byleth can have a relationship with every single character, but no other characters can do this. Every character can have a relationship with every one in their starting house, but they don't have relationships with every character in another house/The monastery staff/The Knights of Serious. For example, Edelgard has only a four relationships with someone outside of her house, that being Lysithea, Hanneman, Manuela, and Constance. She doesn't have a relationship with anyone else outside of Byleth and here house. Still a lot of support conversations though, given that most characters have far more than four out-of-house relationships.

"We don't know how much of Arceus will carry over into the mainline games yet...." Well we do know several things-the gameplay style is going to be fully open world. The texture on the Pokémon such as Lucario, Seviper, and Magnemite, show us that they're going all in on making the Pokémon look as good as possible. The engine looks almost the same as Arceus, to the point where people thought it was Arceus DLC not next gen. I've said it for years. Let's go Pikachu and Eevee were baby's first next gen console Pokémon games. They played around with things like color, following pokemon, keeping things true to the original, yet adding something new. Sword and Shield was them testing the waters. Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, are the hold over games every generation has one-the enhanced version that will tide people over until the next big thing. Legends: Arceus was them pushing the boundaries of what the Switch can do. And Scarlet and Violet will be what propels Pokémon into the future.

It just seemed like any other Kirby game to me; amazing soundtrack, level theming and visuals, but easy and surface-level gameplay that keeps me engaged enough to finish the game but isn't outstanding enough to resonate with me afterward. Nice video! I got covid like a week and a half ago, and I just bought a new Switch OLED. In this time I have already put in 40 hours into Fire Emblem: Three Houses, probably my favorite game. I love the strategy and the character driven story and building my units, sooo fun. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a very close second. Followed by Smash Ultimate and Odyssey. I have tried to like Breath of the Wild, and while I appreciate the art style, exploration, and puzzles, its hard for me to really dive into it because it feels too dark for me.

Great list, Arlo! The Switch has been a constant companion for me throughout these years(once I was out of college, at least), and has greatly expanded my gaming horizons. Some of my most-played games are Animal Crossing, Pokémon Legends Arceus and New Snap (and Sword; competitive breeding takes a while), Skyrim and Stardew Valley are the big time sinks, and outside of the other big IPs (Mario, Luigi, Zelda, Pokémon, Dread, and Kirby), there’s dozens more. Some other third-party titles not on your list (though I’ve also played through Yoku’s twice) are Hollow Knight, Flinthook, Digimon Cyber Sleuth, Lego City Undercover, Shovel Knight, the de Blob games, the Ori games, West of Loathing, Shantae, Dust an Elysian Tail, Untitled Goose Game, et FREAKING cetera! And that’s not even counting the other games I still have in my huge backlog! The point is, I love the Switch, and I’ll continue playing it even after its life cycle ends.

I am legitimately addicted to monster hunter, after so long of waiting for a game series to enjoy as much as something like pokemon for me stumbling onto monster hunter stories one day is the only reason i know of this franchise. You know.... after beating Yoku's Island Express I was like "that was fun", and then moved on. ..But now, months later, I keep thinking about it and I'm slowly coming the realization that it's one of my favourite games of all time. For real. Hope they make more.

I'm sure I know why but I'm a lil sad not to see Animal Crossing! It was definitely a landmark game during the pandemic and a crazy comeback for the series. Otherwise, lots of great games on this list!

My Favorite Switch Games: 1.Super Mario Odyssey 2.The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 3.Metroid Dread 4.Paper Mario: The Origami King 5.Mario Party: Superstars 6.Luigi's Mansion 3 7.Batman: The Telltale Series 8.Hades Honorable Mention: Super Mario 3D All-Stars (Awesome collection of games, but they're older games remastered for switch) There's still a lot of games I have yet to fully experience, so this list will become a lot more complicated sooner or later!

I just bought Starlink ultimate collection (all of the expansions) for the 4th of July sale and am playing it for the first time. I have very quickly fallen in love with the art, characters, presentation and experience. While you are probably correct, I would love to see a sequel that ditches the toys and keeps the IP alive. Playing all digital is so much fun.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land should totally be on here! I personally think it’s better than most of these games and that’s saying something considering how big some of these games are.

18:00 I have never played a warriors game before AoC and I WAS H O O K E D on this game from the moment I played the demo, I played this game nonstop to the point I played for several hundred hours total, and I enjoyed every single second of it, and I'll even go back every once in a while and start fresh just because it's so enjoyable for me

Hey did you know that Undertale has a spiritual successer? The title is called "Deltarune" and it was even made by the same developers, but only the first two chapters has come out, but the second one came out fairly recently like, I would say 5 or 6 months ago

From 2017 to 2021, three of those five years, my game of the year was a game I bought and played on switch. Breath of the wild, Hades and Metroid dread. The switch is shockingly still kicking with new titles and wonderful ports, and in 2022 there are so many games that have been released and still quite a few more to look forward to. It's simply one of my top three favorite consoles of all time

It's interesting you put Resident Evil Revelations 2. My first experience with RE was through the double pack for Switch and I also fell in love with the series from it. I actually liked the first Revelations more than the second, but it's probably because I never tried the Hoard Mode (I was more interested in the story). I'll have to go back and try it out!

The games that made my personal switch experience were rayman legends, super mario 3d world, pokemon lets go eevee, dragon quest 11 and mario kart 7. havent played kirby yet but Im sure it will make it to the top as well. also, playing them all on my blue switch lite which came exactly on my birthday is a treat

Finally someone mentioned dragon quest 11 its an amazing game and looks great 👍
