The funny thing about this whole swearing matter is that there's technology to bleep out swearing, especially if it's something that is televised. Or if that's somehow out of reach for F1, maybe don't air the parts where swearing is involved which F1 and FOM have control over? The irony is that DTS airs these radio messages uncensored. Literally the reason anyone would know for sure Leclerc used the f-word in Monaco 2022 was because of the trailer for DTS Season 5 that showed that moment without the bleeping. You didn't even need to look it up anymore, DTS literally throws swear words in your direction in all its glory. And even with all that...swearing? Really? Let's be real here one way or another children are going to hear swear words whether in songs, movies, etc. And if you're watching F1, a place that can brew swearing with the high-intensity environment, it's a hazard you take just as how you are exposing children to potentially catastrophic crashes like Silverstone 2022 or Bahrain 2020. If you don't want your children to hear swearing, then don't let them watch these things, especially the press conference where literally nothing of interest to children is happening.

It can be used in all ways from offence to praise to surprise and nobody but the most conservative people mind it, with the exception of the performative civility of TV. In the global world of F1 what words, phrases, remarks would be considered off limits? 2) This is 2024 where many of us purchase directly the F1 TV app so that we can get access to all the amazing content beyond just the basic mainstream media broadcast. Unpopular opinion here: Max said what are we 5 years old but, by the same token, an adult should be able to a express themselves without swearing when on the international stage representing F1, FIA and your team. I don’t see the problem here. It’s not that hard or big of an ask.

There are lines that should not be crossed including misogynism, racism, bigotry. Obvously I can't prove it but I've never heard a driver use any such terms. However, the word "fuck," at least in English, has evolved so far away from its original meaning that's it's rarely used in its original context (at least outside the world of porn). It is used most often as an adjective to add strong emphisis in both negative and positive contexts. Max says the car is fucked up or fucked royally--all he's saying is that the car is complete garbage--no allusion at all sex. Or Vettel might say "fukin'-A!" after winning a race--again, no allusion to sex. Neither of these have a thing to do with or even a reference to the original meaning of the word. Blipping the word out is insanely ridiculous since anyone hearing the blip doesn't even have to think to fill in that blank. Yes, formal meetings with the media should be civil and kept clean. But come on, most politicians out there (especially in the overcooked world of American politics right now) swear like drunk sailors. And the FIA is going to ask drivers who are risking their lives to keep a lid on?

Not swearing in the FIA press conferences makes sense, but if you are going to broadcast radio chatter then you need to understand that you are going to get what you get.

I don’t think it’s unreasonable to want to cut down on the swearing outside the car, or to ask that they try to avoid it while in the car, but it’s just been handled so poorly. We should never have heard about it from the FIA

I've been watching F1 on and off (only when available on national TV and now app) for many decades now and have seen many fellow countrymen struggle ever since and even before Jan Lammers and subsequent rear of the pack drivers. For me it has always been about the sport and when we finally had a talented driver in a race winning team, it got even more interesting. With Verstappen, I'm at the point where I almost have had enough with F1 and FIA and what they've done with the sport ever since it landed in the hands of an American company. I've said it years ago when this all started, that you've only have to look at the once noble sport of wrestling and what the Americans have done to it to earn some money. The Las Vegas race proved that for me and made F1 into everything the old greats like Senna and now, most outspoken, racers like Alonso and Verstappen hate about it. The whole swearing "issue" seems to be mostly a UK and Anglo-American issue. In many civilized countries you will never hear swear words being bleeped out. Even in national news programs where someone uses a body part or human activity to colorfully describe a feeling or situation, they leave it in, even when it's pre-recorded. It's simply part of language and tells everything about the person and the emotions of the moment. And the interviewer or commentator will never apologize on behalf of someone else about their language which is so common on UK TV. It's also very hypocritical. As if swear words or colorful language don't exist in their society. And also, as if people, even children, don't know the word behind the bleep. It only emphasizes it. When they want to make a change, trust is always better than control. Just the other week, I saw a bike racer being interviewed after a 200+k race and use a female body part to describe his day, a commonly used word for such a situation in our language. No bleeps, nor any remark from the interviewer. Only the man himself immediately said that he maybe shouldn't have used that word on live TV. That's where, in my opinion, real change happens. Work together as adults and be real.

the two examples with Hamilton at the beginning are at least justifiable as a safety measure, but swearing is a bit of a stretch innit

F1 drivers are probably the MOST educated and intellectually trained athletes in the world. They need rapid responses, under highly technical settings and at tremendous risks. Obviously they are far from swearing too much in comparison to most if not all sports. These are just sensible ears

I can’t believe we live in an age where the FIA are making a problem out of drivers swearing. I wonder if this applies to just the English language? I wonder what would happen if drivers start saying words like “Kut” or “Hund” or “Oh Twaddi”

When Yuki first started in F1, he was swearing a lot, and it was the team and redbull family who wanted to stop that. Now when the FIA want everyone to use proper language, drivers and teams started complaining, especially that called redbull family.

It's absolutely crazy how FIA keeps focusing on these idiotic things rather than actual important things for races. How about making a good calendar as a start? And don't forget that F1 is STILL taking gambling, crypto and alcohol sponsorships, how is that worse than a random "fuck" in a press conference no one other than the press and huge F1 fans watch?

Formula 1 TV has a choice to play or not to play a drivers radio messages that contains swearing. If swearing is banned, then just do not play that particular radio message (either with or without bleeping) - I think this is only really necessary for LIVE content. Radio message are not live, replays are not live Netflix Drive to survive was not live....

"Max Verstappen you are fined 1 credit for a violation of the verbal morality statute" I'm not a Max fan by any stretch but he has my backing in this and respect 1000000% I hope ALL the other drivers follow his lead. Sulayem needs to go. He's been wretched as head of FIA. What a joke.

The penalty is ridiculous and I am with Max on this one. Although obviously swearing should be kept to a minimum in the press conferences, this is not the way to do that. The quote from Mohammed Ben Sulayem that F1 drivers aren't rappers is also very inappropriate. Rappers should also not be swearing constantly and I am not sure how much they do it nowadays. I have never been a fan of how Mohammed Ben Sulayem has handled things but this penalty crosses a different line.
@SteveZorro-v7l33 минут бұрын
One can blur out a cuss word when they spin out during a race due to emotion. But, during a press conference is just a lack of class. There are better ways to express yourself that demonstrate why F1 Is a better sport than Indy cars.
