Unfortunately, there is no cure. We do make a mechanical adjuster that replaces the electronic one that will allow you to set it precisely where you want it. www.traxxion.com

WOW WOW AND..WOW! It is now the year 2020.. I plan on purchasing a 2020 edition.. I hope this has since been improved upon over the last 2 years. I know they made some supension changes for 2020.. I hope this was one of them.
@Traxxion

It has not changed. They did not make any suspension changes (except for the foam bumper). Check out my 2 part series on 2020 Goldwing suspension.

Good video. Just wondering what the maximum extension of the preload piston. Maybe it’s maxed out in travel on highest setting but it increases pressure...
@Traxxion
@Traxxion 3 жыл бұрын
It's purely based on movement of the piston. The piston moves about .5mm between 2up and 2up w/Luggage. That is not a change any human could detect.

Makes me wonder about the Rain thru sport dampening adjustment. Is that little motor turning the screw from minimum to maximum when going from Rain to Sport, or are we missing out here too ?
@Traxxion
@Traxxion 3 жыл бұрын
Engine modes are not connected to the rear preload adjusting system.

Question: Since the preload adjuster hardware is the same as on the old (1832 cc) Wings, does that mean that the hydraulic hose running from the pump to the shock on the new (1833 cc) bike is subject to the same swelling and subsequent sag as the one on the old bike? Or did Honda upgrade that hose on the later years of the old bike's run?
@Traxxion
@Traxxion 5 жыл бұрын
Same type of hose, slightly different length. We manufacture an upgrade just like we had for the previous bike. It's available at www.traxxion.com

Thinking about it, since each bag has a ridiculously low weight rating and the trunk has a ridiculously low weight rating, and the passenger is on the passenger seat so it can't be used for carrying luggage, Honda probably only sees a need for 15-20 pounds of luggage. That last adjustment for luggage would be about right. Two average people take most bikes over their GVWR. Obviously, people load their bikes a bit heavier.
@michaelhoare5291
@michaelhoare5291 4 жыл бұрын
Following that same logic, there should therefore be an equally insignificant change from rider only to rider with luggage and yet that step is the biggest which makes no sense as Max says when the luggage weight capacity is perhaps only a 10th-20th of the weight of a passenger. The biggest change should be between rider and rider and passenger. What was wrong with keeping the previous 0-25 increments? Change for changes sake. Emperors new clothes!

Max, does the geometry of the linkage vary the effect of non-linear preload of the shock?

I have just discovered your videos, which I think are very good. Clearly to get the most out of the Gold Wing changes need to be made. How much impact is there on the user interface to implement the changes for better function and performance?

Max, at the "one up" setting, is the preload at its minimum of range? Conversely, is the preload at its maximum of range setting at "two up plus luggage"? Now here is a kicker, I have your shock and the heaviest spring you offer on my 2002. I am about 255# and cruise single with the setting at 11 (I have a little hydraulic pre-load at even 0 -- Fred's trick). My pillion rider is only 125# and we use 21. If we are packing stuff we go with 25 and when I ride in the mountains alone I go 25. So, maybe I am spacing the setting like Honda did. Our (my) settings are strictly "seat of pants" and not engineering. prs
@rooster3019
@rooster3019 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Then, at least for my style and big ole butt, a stronger spring and better dampening may reasonably provide my desired ride.
@sucapizda
@sucapizda 6 жыл бұрын
Do you think the more you compress the spring, the less compression it needs to achieve a stiffer feeling? If that makes sense?
@GreenMtnHunter
@GreenMtnHunter 6 жыл бұрын
I think Goose means: is it possible that the damping increases exponentially as the spring is compressed? For ex: If the first 4mm of compression requires 50#'s, could it be that the next 2mm in also requires 50#'s of pressure, or, that another 4mm of compression would require 100#'s of pressure?..understanding that would not solve the issue of the fraction of a mm dampening for the last setting.... My question is: if Honda refreshes the software, will they simply soften the lower settings? Is the pump capable of creating a longer, (stiffer) final dampening? Or is the current 2+luggage setting as far as the pump can push the dampner?

You sir are Thorough! Hey what if the one bike is an anomoly? You didn't mention any other 2018 model reporting the same condition.(or I missed that) and keep digging, Honda is Big and that makes plenty of oversight, one would think. I mean this new engineering is mind blowing. (I had an original GL1000 naked)

@Max Just curious... has this been tested with weight on the bike? On one hand that shouldn't make a difference but on the other maybe it does. Your thoughts?

Thanks, Max. I had an "03 Gold Wing. Loved it. Miss it. When I first saw the '18, I thought, oh boy, I may have to change my mind about an adventure bike. If I do get one I'll call the dealer closest to your shop and have them deliver it to you so you can do your magic.

Re suspension settings: All bike manufacturers make this mistake, the factory presets would make sense only if they told us what the weight for the pre-load actually was- average weight (height) is utterly meaningless without an actual number behind it.

The BMW GS and GSA up to 2017 would make you tip over if you changed the settings. The 2018 is much better. As you say, probably nothing more than an up date.

Interesting point on the rear shock. You say that the rear shock on the 2018 is exactly the same as the other year's shocks. A perusal of the parts fiches for a 2018 and another year shock show a very slightly different part number. And the 2018 shock is DOUBLE the price. Some other parts prices are shocking. Brake pads and air filters are about double.
