It's a crying shame that models of this sophistication are all but phased out in so called modern movies. They just give you an aesthetics and a feel that can't be reproduced by CGI. You did the Eagle proud. I love it.

It is for it's original purpose. But it gets used unrealistically in the series, for planetary landings, when it is clearly designed for vacuum use. But yes, I could see a real version of this being built for transporting personnel and equipment around the lunar or other airless moons surfaces and into lunar orbit. If we're stuck with chemical fuels, the tanks would need to be bigger.

The series was shown in German television about 1976-77 when I was 6 years old. I was deeply impressed by it. The german title was „Mondbasis Alpha 1“. Great Job of building this wonderful eagle!

@@MaxAfterburner It was dubbed. Subtitles were very rare even at that time (and before, and after). When I was a kid (60s) all TV-series ("Flipper", "Lassie", "Bonanza", .... you name it) were dubbed. Often they even had a german version of the title song. In fact I can't remember any series which had subtitles.

There was a joke in the SF fan community that Moonbase Alpha's automated Eagle factory had got stuck in the "on" position after the explosion that threw the Moon out of Earth's orbit and the people in the Moonbase had to crash at least one Eagle each episode to prevent them from being overrun with new-build Eagles.

The show's model builders originally scratch built everything, right up until commercial models of the Eagle began to appear, and then they would go to their nearest hobby shop and buy Eagle kits to assemble to use on the show! An interesting circular process.
@largol33t1
@largol33t1 2 жыл бұрын
Probably saved money too. First they don't have to build every little part. Second, if they didn't like how the model came out, they could easily scratch build parts to fix whatever didn't match the original, which saves more money since they already had a model to modify.
@jimsmalleimb7709
@jimsmalleimb7709 2 жыл бұрын
Actually, no. None of the Airfix/MPC kits made at the time were used on the show at all. At least not built into Eagles, as the old kits were not accurate enough to film. But some parts from the kit were used as dressing on other models.
@berendharmsen
@berendharmsen 2 жыл бұрын
@@jimsmalleimb7709 Indeed. My favourite (over) use of the Airfix Eagle kit was in the Italian would-be Star Wars movie Starcrash. You can find it on KZbin. The opening shot of the obligatory 'big ship' sees the model detailed with every single Airfix Eagle part on the sprues: engine bells, the landing strut parts, even the cockpit is prominently seen. Another kit they really loved apparently was the Revell Saturn V rocket. Look it up, it's fun to see how many bits you recognise! But indeed, no Eagle Airfix models were abused in the production of Space:1999 🙂

@@berendharmsen I don't know how accurate this kit is, but various 'service module' detail parts are clearly halves of a 1:144 lunar module.

Well SF kits were used as greeblies on many ship models made post-Star Wars until CGI kicked in and kinda ruined the art of scratchbuilding. They did use toy blasters as the basis for actual blasters in the Star Wars prequels. Nowadays it's 3D printing, which opens up a whole new world of possibility.

In the late 1970s , there were a Ton of abandoned buildings in my city (Newark NJ) and while playing inside one ,i found an EAGLE ONE ... intact and in great great shape. I was a kid at that time so other kids found out i had it and bullied it from me. It was an awesome toy tho, you could detach the front part and the rear engine to make a jet shuttle, leaving the middle as an stand alone housing or base.

Absolutely brilliant build!!! Love the attention to detail, the wash, weathering etc. However, surely,, the underside would have been dirtier, given the rocket blast/dirt/debris etc. Unless this Eagle had just had a jetwash!!! But such a petty point. Seriously, a great build, I want one!!!!! Space 1999 was a BIG part of my childhood, and this is a great model that really does honour those TV models!!! Excellent work!!

The series ran on WGN-TV 9 in first-run, Sundays at 5.30p. After the series became a hit, WGN started showing repeats Tuesdays at 7p. Then during the summer of 1976, the series' repeats were moved to Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7p. Second season, the show was back on Sundays at 5.30p and left the schedule after "The Dorcons." In the fall of 77, reruns Sundays at 5.30p picked back up through spring 78. Then, it was gone again. In July 79, calls to the station got 4 weeks of repeats Sundays at 10a to help promote Space:1999 Con 79 in Pittsburgh. WGN burned off the broadcast rights putting the show on in various overnight time slots as filler through 1981. The series was picked up by WGBO-TV 66 and shown M-F at 5p during the summer of 88. 66 pulled it then returned it to the air in 1991-92 7 days a week at 4a, sometimes another episode was doubled up at 5a. Later that year, it ran M-F exclusively on The Sci-Fi Channel.
