Max_Afterburner Yes in scale comparison it looks more like a transport plane than a fighter. I saw Tornado, A10 and F16 next to it if i can recall it correctly. I remember that radar dome was painted white and it had nuclear warning sign - you know these 3 triangles in yellow and i still don't know why. it was a Belorussian plane that i saw in 2009 and tragically it crashed at airshow next day and both pilots died.

@@gary851 Belarus was part of the USSR. After the collapse of all the planes were in this territory began to belong to this country. For example, when reuniting Germany and the GDR in modern Germany, in the territory of the GDR remained MiG 29. And the air force of this country used them until some period.

@MaxAfterburner3 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, my compressor does not have a gauge, but I estimate it runs at about 22 psi. I thin my Tamiya acrylics before airbrushing at a higher paint to thinner ratio than most hobbyists at about 80% paint to 20% thinner. Other modelers usually go with 60-70% paint to 40-30% thinner.

The Su-27 is probably a more useful fighter because of its superior range and higher weapons payload but I always felt the MiG-29 edged it out in appearance. I just think it's a better-looking plane not that I'm saying Flanker is ugly, either. The LERX is larger and rounder on the MiG but the view out of cockpit is better in the Su-27. Su-27 like the F-15 will never sneak into a fight. The Russians, btw, appreciate the NATO names for these planes. They really fit the planes. Half the time in the past the codenames assigned to Soviet-era fighters were not so complimentary! It's funny that there are equally-owned numbers for MiG-29s and Su-27s in the US (2 apiece) but there are no Flankers currently on display in any museum in the US but there are at least 7 MiG-29s on display. Two of them are at Wright-Patterson AFB; 1 at Intel office, the other in the Cold War hangar of the USAF Museum. They definitely have been flying these planes over Area 51... There are photos taken from a distance with telescopic lens-equipped cameras but it's obvious the planes are there even if USAF doesn't admit it.

Not a bad build. Big tip here which will improve things for you, try a gloss cote before you apply decals and wash, the decals will fix without the horrible silvering around the edges and the wash will be a lot easier to remove. Also did you notice you put the stars on the wings upside down.
@MaxAfterburner6 жыл бұрын
Thanks, but at 23:48 I do note that I put on a protective gloss coat. The stars are correct, it may be the angle of the camera view that is creating this illusion.

Having recently finished the Academy Su-27, it's interesting to see that both kits have the same annoying nub on the upper wing. Many of the parts look familiar too, which is odd seeing as the scalemates website doesn't list the two kits as the same mold.
@markjackson76506 жыл бұрын
Gary Gray they are the same mould mate. I have the academy one too and upon initial inspection it seems the fit is sketchy at best how did you find yours?
@xTheZapper6 жыл бұрын
Oh, well someone needs to update Scalemates! If they're they're same mold then that is good and (mostly) bad news. I also have this HB kit, so the good news is that the Dream Model photoetch that I forgot to use on the Academy should also fit this one, but the bad news being that *the fit on the Academy is shocking* in places. The leading edges are awful, the fuselage was quite twisted, I think there were dodgy seams around the cockpit (caused by the twisting), sink marks and ejector pin holes everywhere, and the upper surface of mine was covered in fine scratches. The missiles were a bit crappy so I actually used the ones from this Hobbyboss kit. A bonus is that the HB kit has the cool looking R-77 missiles with the grid fins, the pylons were nicer too. I only built the Academy because at the time I bought it, it was the only 1/48 Flanker around. Since then this Hobbyboss one came out, and the Kinetic Su-33 and the Kitty Hawk Su-35. I've also got those kits, so it'll be interesting to see how different they are. The Kitty Hawk and Kinetic were *OBVIOUSLY* different from the Academy when I had a rummage through the boxes, the Kinetic looks to be an order of magnitude higher quality, but a faint alarm bells started ringing when looking at the HB, even the cardboard sleeve the body sits in in the box is the same! Put it this way, I'd never build another Academy, but it the HB is based on it... oh dear. :'-( I'm worried now, I'm going to have a look through the HB box and see if all the painful memories come flooding back.

I'm actually putting together a SU27 kit atm. It's one of my all time favorite jets. Such a beautiful aircraft. However, the quality on the kit I'm putting together is pretty bad. Pieces don't line up well and it's a lot of work. I don't know much about brands and had just bought one randomly. So I'm wondering what brands you recommend for good quality, highly detailed models? I recognize Tamiya brand, but don't know if they're really top quality or just standard mainstream. Anyway, I really enjoyed your video and it's given me some ideas to go off for my own kit that even though the model isn't very good I hope it'll still look good in the end. I've subscribed and will be sure to check out some of your other builds.

Hi Tommy, it's up to the builder. As I mentioned in the video, I prefer to add decals after weathering, but most model builders add their decals before weathering.

Great video Max! Question, when your painting the larger areas, why are you using such a thin passes with the airbrush? Seems like it takes you a while.

Hi Bobby, I prefer to have a lot of control by slowly building up the paint rather than ending up too far and having to make corrections.

Hi there, I am about to start the kit, I was wondering, how did you manage to put the front landing gear at the end? The plan tells you put it on at the beginning but I tried to put it when all is closed up and it’s impossible. How did you do it? Thank

Hi Joel, it was awhile ago now, but I seem to recall it was difficult doing this out of plan sequence. I may have cut the piece apart appropriately and inserted a portion at a time then glued it together from there. This Flanker B is deep inside a glass cabinet now. If I get a chance to retrieve it, I'll have to look again and refresh my memory. 🤔

Beautiful build and paint work I've got this kit in my stash may have to break it out and build it now!! Can I ask what adhesive did you use to attach th e nose cone please?
@MaxAfterburner6 жыл бұрын
I used the old style Testors at the internal tab and slot points and a circumferential swipe of the Tamiya Extra Thin Cement.

Great work. I was wondering how you can manage to apply 2D printed paper mask to actual 3D fuselage like F4 or F18? How you trace curves & depth?/ Thanks for sharing.
@MaxAfterburner5 жыл бұрын
Hi, Thanks. The curvatures on the surfaces can be challenging. I usually have to use some masking tape to compensate where the 2D paper does not fit well. You might notice this on the A-10 build video.

Did you use regular paint for your primer?
@MaxAfterburner8 ай бұрын
Hello ascari6460, I just did a coat with NATO Black to start as the primer/black shading for the surfaces. 😀

Do you reckon 10 mls of each paint colour would work or do i need alot more?
@MaxAfterburner10 ай бұрын
Hi NhanLe-wh2hi, if you're airbrushing, that should be plenty 😊
