Having grown up with model Spitfires and Hurricanes, ME109s and FW 190s I remember the first news of the P1127 was like a miracle or some kind of joke. It was the most extraordinary thing to see a plane do that

@@soupfork2105 not sure which kit that might have been, but if you want a decent 1/72 GR1 (pointy nose) RAF Harrier, the best choice nowadays would be the latest Airfix version. Indeed, for any 1/72 first gen Harrier, GR1, GR3 or AV8A, Sea Harrier FRS1 or FA2 go for Airfix. If you want 1/48 Sea Harrier then get Kinetic's FRS1 or FA2, or wait for them to release the rest eventually....

That gap on the top wing is there because in real life for them to change the engine, they have to remove the complete forward wing assembly and all the nozzles while the plane is jacked up in a nose down position to pull the engine out from above. The squadron I talked with said the fastest they had ever done an engine change and ready to fly was 53 hours.

I have built 5 - only problem i have is trying to get them to sit on 4 wheels , simultaneously ( 1:72 and 1:48 , tamiya , Italeri , Airfix etc etc . all are three-wheelers ! ) we used to live in a low fly zone in Mid Wales , near the Mach Loop , so saw lots of Harriers over the years.

Hi max, NJAU (Nice Job As Usual) 😁! A couple of questions here 1) is there a rationale for the paint mix when it comes to those camouflages? Experience, taste, instructions booklet, or what else? 2) why give a clear *gloss* cover before applying decals, instead of a clear *matt*, which you nevertheless apply at the end? 3) when using thinned oil paint for panel lines and weathering do you wait for it to be dry before wiping it off, or do you rub straight after the application? thanks 👍👋
@MaxAfterburner
@MaxAfterburner 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrea, I mainly use Tamiya acrylic paints and many kits may not list Tamiya colors on their suggested paint guides. I stick with colors that have worked well for me in the past, so it's a combination of experience and personal taste. 2) Flat paint colored surfaces are grainy if you look at them on a "microscopic" level. Decals affix better to a smooth finish and this is one of the reasons for applying the clear gloss coat. If you put a decal onto a matte surface, there is a chance that the decal's clear carrier film border/zones especially will be very visible after drying in an effect known as "silvering". The emblem will look more like a decal rather than something that is "painted" on and therefore not give a realistic appearance to your model. The final flat coat is to get everything back to a matte tone that military aircraft mostly exhibit. 3) After applying the oil based washes and I'm looking to just emphasize panel lines, I allow the paint to dry only for a short time. When I want to add more grime to the area, I'll allow the wash to dry longer so that the wash doesn't come off too easily as I work the area. Most of the time if you decide later you want to clean up a grimy region, you can dip the cotton swab in clean mineral spirits and wipe away what you don't want.
@andreagiordano2689
@andreagiordano2689 5 жыл бұрын
@@MaxAfterburner Sticking to the topic of camouflage, I thought that kit producers would refer in their kit instructions to real colors, having real reference numbers, and that paint producers would offer a paint, with its own code, but matching the real one....it sounds from your reply that this is not necessarily the case 🤔...
@MaxAfterburner
@MaxAfterburner 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, most of the time they will refer to specific paint manufacturers with the product code for each color. However, they usually don't list all the companies. For instance, Hasegawa does not list Tamiya paints for their kits, but they will list other companies.

BTW, Last sunday I've just got finished building my very first military kit, a Hobby Boss 1/72 AH-1S Cobra (JGSDF camo) and most of the techniques I'd used in building the JGSDF Cobra is came from your vids. My next build is the 1/72 Hasegawa F-15J but just temporarily stopped coz I'm still waiting for my ordered 1/72 JASDF weapons set but I'm also opted to build another AH-1S Cobra, but this time it's color scheme is from the newly-delivered AH-1S of the Philippine Air Force. Hopefully, with the acquisition of the 2 Cobras from Jordan via donation, this will strengthen the possibility of the PH Gov't buying the AH-1W or the AH-1Z. Looking forward for your next build

Hi F.Alfonzo, I've definitely had some requests for the Tornado! A few squadrons of them used to visit at Davis-Monthan AFB over from Britain and from Germany and I would see them on the flightline parked nearby whenever our F-16 Vipers were doing "Live" fire exercises. 🤩

I've always been curious why you choose to scrape black paint away on the controls and buttons rather than doing something like drybrushing grey paint on. Is there any particular reason or just personal habit/preference?

I just bought my first model airplane kit in nearly 2 decades and have been watching your channel for tips/tricks. Question, do you do any cleaning of your models prior to painting? I remember always being told to wash them first to remove any mould-release agents, fingerprint oils, etc. Just wondering if there's an unseen step in all of this.
@MaxAfterburner
@MaxAfterburner 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, with the modern model kits you don't need to pre-clean them. I would only do so if it was an older vintage kit.

@MaxAfterburner 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeff, of course it can depend on a variety of things. But, if we consider just a decent medium quality 1/48 scale kit with a few jars of paint and no after market parts, maybe an average of $65-70 USD.
