I just saw an F-18 flying low westbound over Lake Keechelus about 60 miles east of Seattle and it turned hard north right over I-90 (and me) and flew straight up a box canyon. Proof that the Maverick Movie was just a cover story for a real mission in Iran AND that Darkstar is real.

I just remembered that when I was 12 years old my father and I were standing in the front yard of our house in Mountain Home AFB . A couple of jets flew overhead. I was so excited. They were here and gone in instant. I told my father I was really impressed with the speed of the jets. As he stood with a big grin on his face watching them vanishing in the distance, he said, “ Thank God they are ours.” From then on I have always thought that exact same thing when I lucky enough to see them.

Navy and Marine Aviators are always worried more about fuel than Air Force guys, it’s refreshing to hear that out of an Air Force stick jockey 😂, after they are done with a cas mission or bombing run they have to chase down their runway.

I read where a British Apache pilot went out onto the range in Oman during workups for Afghanistan to see for himself the effects of his 30mm rounds on various types of materials. I believe he was the squadron's weapons officer. He later used that knowledge for a danger close supporting mission shooting into an alleyway.

One thing I never realized until I read raven one was that the pilots are the ones who actually plan their strike. Best I can tell, the general staff just say something along the lines of “see that building? I don’t want to anymore” and the guys in the jets get together and plan how to make that building disappear.
@littlefriend123
@littlefriend123 Жыл бұрын
Most of the military functions that way as well. Battle plans are broken up and assigned to the Subject Matter Experts(SME) to plan. Meaning the guys who'd specific job the is. If a building is being breached and cleared all the movement to and within in planned and briefed by infantry guys, the individual breaches and methods by the combat engineers and so on.

I have a cool story. In 1981 here in Norway a fighter jet hit a bird that ended up in the pilot’s face. Bloodying him up. He ejected and the jet flew on directly over our cabin. Flew another couple of miles then boom in the ground. 20 years later the fjord had the lowest level ever and my dads cousin found the jet engine! He brought some heavy machinery to the edge of the water and to this day he has the busted engine in his shed.

Great breakdown! I think in this mission, the pair of planes have to fly closely, although such a formation is at the cost of some safety and situational awareness. The reason is because they are going in to a rather tight crater: over the first ridge, on the way down, they have just a few seconds to find, buddy-lase, lock on and drop the bombs on the small ventilation shaft, then they have to pull up to climb out immediately, before they run out of room towards the bottom of the crater and smack themselves onto the rocks. All this requires the two planes are tight-knit and highly synchronised like one plane. If they stayed 500 feet or a mile apart they wouldn’t be able to accomplish.

I really enjoy the positivity of this channel! One comment- I'm not a pilot, nor do I pretend to be. However, after doing a little digging online, it does appear to be accurate that the "paddle switch" that is depicted being pulled in the movie would allow a 33% "over-g" from 7.5G to 10.0G in an emergency. Personally, I'd probably just pass out at 2 G's and call it a day, lol 😆

I seem to recall reading somewhere that the reason the F-16 is designed to pull 9g is because they found that was the highest sustained g-load a pilot could reasonably be expected to pull, even with g-suit and training. Is that true?

So... in 1985 when the first movie came out, I was living on Homestead AFB (my father was an F-4 command pilot at the time) and it came to the base theater. On the first night, the theater was filled with a bunch of Viper and Phantom pilots (USAF was going through the final transition of those aircraft at that point in time) and the calls of "Bullshit!" floating through the theater as the maneuvers were made in the Tomcat were legendary. That being said, I feel that the maneuvers made in this movie were somewhat more realistic, though procedurally I expect they would never happen without pilots losing their wings.

The way to hit that target is with 3 B-2 stealth bombers and 6 MOPs. At night. In the weather. Minimum force composition is 1 B-2 and 2 MOPs. If you're going to use F-18s, an 8 ship with 4 GBU-31V3s (.....or V5s???) each. Plus a whole lot of support assets. From a level delivery in the 20s, or if you want to go in low, a 5G toss from 5 miles out. And the bridge? Wouldn't they see that in mission planning? Here's a hint: Go over it.

So wait a minute. After Maverick demonstrated that the mission can be flown by just one plane, why on earth did they send two? And another thing: when going uphill in the entry point, they didn't experience any high Gs, but when they did the same on the other side, they had 9 Gs? How can you have high Gs when you're not in a circle, but just going up?
